Investigating decisive factors in the scholarly publishing of Open Access books: a cross-disciplinary study of book authors and volume editors as published in 2019 in the English language.
The rapid growth of the OA movement, largely driven by the ethical principle of free access to readers and its support by key funding bodies and governments globally, has moved the focus and motivations of scholarly authors beyond that of OA journal article publications and into the realm of the book publishing. As of January 2020, over 25,000 OA books were registered on DOAB by over 380 publishers. Within this figure, only five traditional scholarly publishers were found in the top thirty (based on the number of OA book titles published), presenting the emergence of new publishing vehicles such as commercial OA companies, institutions, and libraries. Facilitated by the availability of digital publication methods and encouraged by the deteriorating reputation of ‘oligarchic’ commercial publishers, the disintermediation of the traditional publishing supply chain has created a new dynamic of the author-publisher relationship for OA book content.
To date, no study has taken place which statistically explores and attempts to understand the motivational factors of an OA book author. The research aims of this dissertation specifically look to investigate why a scholarly author may look to publish under an OA licence and their main considerations when deciding who to publish with. Both points are examined across theoretical disciplines in academia to determine whether any variation in motivational factors is present, and if so, theorise why this might be. A twofold study of existing literature and a process of empirical research supports the findings. Data from primary research through author survey offers both quantitative and qualitative analysis to meet the research objective, as well as the opportunity for inferential analysis of the cross-disciplinary results.
The findings from this research show how the desire for free access to readers is the overriding motivation for a scholarly book author. Moral benefits such as availability to readers who could otherwise not afford access, as well as the greater opportunities for dissemination and impact support this. The decision to publish OA did not necessarily influence the authors choice of publishing vehicle, but the editorial and production quality (including peer review process) and reputation were both important factors. Whilst the pricing of academic books is influential in the push to OA licencing on the author’s part, major concerns with funding of BPCs could stint the growth of the OA book market. Cross-discipline variation was found when looking at the main considerations when choosing a publisher, with type of publisher being the most important to those in the field of History and Archaeology, compared to ease of access for the reader for those in the Biology and Life Sciences. Theories as to why these trends may have developed are further explored within. Finally, this dissertation presents three recommendations to members of the publishing industry and those looking to enter the OA book market on behalf of the OA book author, including matters of transparency, funding assistance, and opportunities of how to achieve a successful author-publisher relationship in the future
The vocal jazz aesthetics of Betty Carter: her musical development, distinctive contributions to jazz and legacy
This thesis illustrates Betty Carter’s musical development as a jazz vocalist beginning in the bebop era to her untimely passing in 1998, her essential impact on vocal jazz, her accomplishments, and extraordinary legacy. The thesis also outlines a brief history of vocal jazz with a music collection and jazz vocalist classification and the aesthetic elements of “the voice” with regards to improvisation and artistic confidence. The objective of this aspect will provide a practical understanding of vocal styling and individuality, while emphasizing Betty Carter’s methodical “vocally instrumental” approach to jazz. Such other features of this thesis contain contemporary ideas and perceptions on new jazz studies to highlight the expansion of women’s contributions to jazz in contrast to the historical tradition of jazz history. In addition, a transcription of one of Carter’s scat solos with phonetic spellings of scat syllables is included.M.A.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes discographyby Tanya Niquelle Ellerbe
