Mechanistic Investigations into the Palladium-Catalyzed Decarboxylative Allylic Alkylation of Ketone Enolates Using the PHOX Ligand Architecture

    No full text
Palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation has become a large and important field for chemical synthesis. Many methodologies in this field offer mild conditions under which challenging and important molecular features can be reliably synthesized, including chiral all-carbon quaternary stereocenters. As a result, palladium- catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation has found significant use in total synthesis, and growing use in industry. While the general process of palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation has been studied for decades, there have been a number of recent modifications and developments, such as asymmetric versions of decarboxylative allylic alkylation procedures that are not yet well understood. The development of future implementations and improvements to palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation and related methodologies is expected to be facilitated by a better understanding of these more recent developments, and thus further mechanistic investigation is warranted. Reported herein is a set of investigations into the palladium-catalyzed decarboxylative asymmetric allylic alkylation of ketone enolates using the PHOX ligand architecture. By monitoring the reaction via 31P NMR, a series of previously unidentified key intermediates is discovered. Two representatives of these key intermediates are isolated and characterized. The solution behavior of these species under reaction-like conditions is studied along with a few novel and related complexes. The role of these intermediates and their impact on the behavior of the reaction and product formation is discussed. Previously confounding experimentally observed behavior for this methodology is rationalized via the properties elucidated for these discovered intermediates.</p

This is a traditional story narrated by YZQ. It was recorded by Nathaniel Sims. The content of the story is summarized as follows: A long time ago there was a family of people. Someone in the family died and so they sent the son to go buy funeral paper. The son was rather stupid and couldn’t remember how to say funeral paper. He said to himself, what am I to do? I won’t remember how to say it and if it’s written down I can read it anyway. So his father told him to walk down the road to Maoxian repeating “funeral paper” all the way. He did this but along the way, a pheasant flew by and startled him. He accidentally changed the words he was repeating and after this, he repeated gibberish syllables all the way down to Maoxian. He got to the store and asked for [wutʂɨtʂɨ] (nonsense). The store owner couldn’t understand what he wanted and asked him? What do you mean [wutʂɨtʂɨ] what do you want? The son couldn’t think and so he said, “Banging on a sheepskin drum and sheep bleating” (making a reference to funerary preparations). Only by his doing this was the shopkeeper able to understand that he wanted to buy funeral paper.  The duration of this recording is: [00:01:33].  </p

This is a personal narrative told by YZQ to Nathaniel Sims on May 3rd, 2012 in Ka’er Village, Yonghe Valley, Mao County, Rngaba Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China. An English translation of the narrative is as follows: I went to Napu, to buy some gastrodia (a type of medicinal root). The sky became dark and when I was coming home. As I got to the bend in the road here, the wind began blowing (onomatopoeia) and there was the sound of a dog barking (onomatopoeia) that followed behind me. I didn’t see a dog. I didn’t see a person. I had encountered a demon. I became scared and picked up a white rock. I chased the demon away by throwing rocks. After I did this, it wasn’t there anymore. I slowly went on up the road. Having arrived at the bottom of my house, I was still scared. I looked back and couldn’t see anything. I had a cold sweat. My clothes were soaked. So I picked up a rock and called out to my spirit. By doing this I called my spirit back to myself. I took the rock out of my pocket and put it inside a pillow without my family knowing this. Seven days later, when making the bed, the rock fell out. They asked me why is there a rock in your pillow? I told them I went down to Napu that night and encountered a demon, got scared, picked up a rock and called my own spirit back to myself. If I had not done this I would go mad, and be violent. Because I brought my spirit back with this rock, I didn’t have any nightmares and have not encountered another demon. The demons are scared of me.  The duration of the recording is: [00:01:54]  </p
