Bodo cygnus Patterson and Simpson 1996
Bodo cygnus Patterson and Simpson, 1996
(fi gures 1g, 2k, l)

Description. Cell 8-13 Mm long, elliptical, with subapical indentation from which two unequal fl agella emerge. The anterior fl agellum is as long as the cell and may wrap around the anterior end of the cell during feeding. The acronematic posterior fl agellum is about 2.5 times the length of the cell. Cells have a spiral groove that is easy to overlook and that extends from the subapical indentation to the posterior end of the cell. Cells move by rotating swimming movements. Sometimes commonly observed.

Remarks. This species was fi rst described from hypersaline marine sites by Patterson and Simpson (1996) and with lengths from 8 to 12 Mm. Our observations are in accord with those of Patterson and Simpson (1996). Bodo cygnus may be confused with B. designis Skuja, 1948 in general appearance, rotational swimming movements and cell length, but it can be distinguished by its spiral groove. The groove is hard to see in swimming cells. Previously reported large B. designis may be referable to B. cygnus because the spiral groove may have been overlooked. Careful observation is needed to distinguish these two species.
Published as part of Lee, Won Je & Patterson, David J., 2000, Heterotrophic flagellates (Protista) from marine sediments of Botany Bay, Australia, pp. 483-562 in Journal of Natural History 34 on pages 490-49
Confronting Language Fetishism in Practice
The notion of fetishism, in the most general interpretation of the term, is one in which an object is afforded extra-natural properties, or is animated and brought to life as an agentive “thing”. In this sense, the notion of language as a fetish (Simpson & O’Regan, 2018; Simpson, 2018) imagines languages such as English as bearing all kinds of extra-linguistic properties: As a product or service (Singh & Han, 2008), as a commodity or resource which speakers exchange (Heller, 2016), as a mythical “thing” which does this or that to people (Pennycook, 2007), and even as a cause of social suffering (Piller & Cho, 2013; Piller, Takahashi, & Watanabe, 2010). What we offer in this chapter is a critical engagement with the notion of fetishism as it relates to a larger body of work on language, language policy, and political economy, in respect of language alienated and fetishised in standard forms; the recasting of language not as a social product, but as a form of legal property, owned and traded by individuals; and the necessity of fetishised forms of language in the functioning of the “free” market. We conclude by underscoring the notion of fetishism as consisting in illusions which exist not in theory, but in practice, and with a call for future research to examine the fetishism of languages in the practice of the market. We therefore argue that calls for policy to develop critical reflexive awareness in speakers, while certainly important, are not in themselves sufficient for moving beyond fetishistic notions of language
Simpson\u27s paradox
The phenomenon in which a certain association between two variables occurs when studying the entire population and then disappears or appears in the opposite direction when the population is divided in subpopulations, is known as Simpson\u27s paradox. Using a measure of strength of the probabilistic association we can formulate Simpson\u27s paradox in three forms: association reversal, Yule\u27s association reversal or amalgamation paradox. We can encounter the phenomenon of the paradox in various fields and for better visual display we can use plots, vectors, mosaic plots and also directed acyclic graphs. There are also some tools that help with identifying the occurrence of Simpson\u27s paradox in data. Simpson\u27s paradox can be connected to causal reasoning, which also helps with explaining why the paradox occurs and how to decide when dealing with data - whether to consider subpopulation division or not. It can also be linked to the sure-thing principle, for which Simpson\u27s paradox serves as a counterexample to the principle\u27s validity

BJOG 2010; DOI: 10.1111/j.1471-0528.2010.02549.x.Objective To examine the relationship between dietary supplement use during pregnancy and birth outcomes.Design A prospective birth cohort.Setting Leeds, UK.Sample One thousand two hundred and seventy-four pregnant women aged 18201345 years. Methods Dietary supplement intake was ascertained using three questionnaires for the first, second and third trimesters. Dietary intake was reported in a 24-hour dietary recall administered by a research midwife at 8201312 weeks of gestation. Information on delivery details and antenatal pregnancy complications was obtained from the hospital maternity records.Main outcome measures Birthweight, birth centile and preterm birth. Results Reported dietary supplement use declined from 82% of women in the first trimester of pregnancy to 22% in the second trimester and 33% in the third trimester. Folic acid was the most commonly reported supplement taken. Taking any type of daily supplement during any trimester was not significantly associated with size at birth taking into account known relevant confounders. Women taking multivitamin-mineral supplements in the third trimester were more likely to experience preterm birth (adjusted OR = 3.4, 95% CI 1.2, 9.6, P = 0.02).Conclusions Regular multivitamin2013mineral supplement use during pregnancy, in a developed country setting, is not associated with size at birth. However, it appears to be associated with preterm birth if taken daily in the third trimester. The mechanism for this is unclear and our study's findings need confirming by other cohorts and/or trials in developed countries

Practice Chair Urban Area Developmen
