Places in Mind: Investigating the Link Between Language and Spatial Concepts

    No full text
The paper raises the question of culturally determined differences in the conceptualization of place and space. Several models have already been developed that can be used to study cognitive maps. However, they either targeted a specific type of environment or were not specific enough in terms of the type of places studied. The model developed by Katalin Reszegi, on the other hand, makes it possible to study all kinds of spatial concepts and their corresponding linguistic expressions, paying special attention to the role of toponyms. In the first part of the article, she presents her model and points out the elements and aspects that are particularly important for the cognitive map. In the second part, co-author Marie Rieger discusses two specific examples (from Tanzania) of differences in the conceptualization of space. In the first case, the example of Dar es Salaam shows that the concept of street names, introduced in colonial times, still plays a minor role in orientation in urban space. In the second case, the example of the Usambara Mountains is used to hypothesize that the utilitarian aspect can lead to different naming practices in terms of which types of places are given a name and which are not

Der Maji-Maji-Krieg. Literarische Leerstellen als Chance zur Eröffnung neuer Dialogräume

Please note, that no abstracts are included in this publication. The article overview, translated in English, is therefore reproduced here: To date, there is no German-language literary work with the devastating Maji Maji War, which the German colonialists waged against the African population in German East Africa between 1905 and 1907, as its thematic center. In the German-language texts belonging to the genre of historical African novels set in German East Africa, the Maji Maji War is only mentioned in passing, if at all. Only in "Der Himmel über dem Kilimandscharo" by Leah Bach is it partly the background to the plot. The central third part of this article examines whether the author succeeds in transcending cultural boundaries through her narrative style and working out the transculturality inherent in the war situation. First, however, there is a brief overview of the historical background. In the final section, the results are summarized and reference is made to an (English-language) novel that can be considered a successful example of the transcultural treatment of the Maji Maji War and other colonial crimes

David Erkomashvile, Ph.D. Academic Year: 2021/2022 Abstract The SARS-Cov-19 or in different wording the global Covid pandemic outburst have created an unprecedented scenario for various organizations, agencies and structures. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has become an extraordinary and shocking event for the world community and the global economy. On the part of the authorities, the COVID-19 pandemic is accompanied by sometimes harsh and ambiguous decisions, the consequences of which are felt by people in many countries of the world: movement between countries was stopped, businesses and enterprises were closed, the restriction was created, those who were sick or at risk of infection were isolated. There was also no possible assumption regarding how long such a mode of life will last. Many factors as a consequential chain of reactions from the pandemic in the aggregate have created a pleasant environment for altering and modifying the cybercrime landscape. This work aims to analyze the factorial presence of modification in the sphere...CHARLES UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES Master of International Security Systems Anastasiya Neskoromna/Rieger Impact of COVID 19 on Security Policies of States in the Area of Cyber Security Abstract Prague 2022 Author: Ms. Anastasiya Neskoromna/Rieger Supervisor: prof. David Erkomashvile, Ph.D. Na základě výsledků analytického hodnocení se důrazně doporučuje, aby různé...Katedra bezpečnostních studiíDepartment of Security StudiesFaculty of Social SciencesFakulta sociálních vě

Single‐Molecule Switching: Fluorescence Polarization Control for On–Off Switching of Single Molecules at Cryogenic Temperatures

    No full text
In article number 1700323, a sparsity‐inducing scheme based on widefield stimulated emission depletion, which requires stringent control of the polarization state of both the excitation and depletion laser, is introduced by Bernd Rieger and co‐workers for superresolution fluorescence microscopy. The ideal state involves excitation and depletion lasers with linear polarizations, orthogonally oriented in the sample plane. This state is obtained from linearly polarized light from the laser, which is made elliptically polarized before reflecting off the dichroic mirror.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.ImPhys/Quantitative ImagingImPhys/Imaging Physic

Moonshine in the Sunshine State: Alcohol\u27s Roots and Routes in Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings\u27s South Moon Under and Ernest Hemingway\u27s To Have and Have Not

    No full text
Comparison study examining the key roles that alcohol and gender play in the novels\u27 construction of place, both reginal and global. Rieger opens with a summary of each author\u27s connection to their adopted state of Florida before moving to discuss their realistic depiction of the people, culture, and natural environments of their respective geographical areas. Rieger contends that Rawlings\u27s language of interdependence with nature breaks down traditional gender norms, while Hemingway represents a stereotypically masculine relationship of dominance over the natural world. Contrasts Hemingway\u27s use of limited natural description and depiction of the rootless Harry Morgan engaged in a global economic enterprise with Rawlings\u27s depiction of characters rooted through family and economics to their specific southern location. Argues that while the moonshiners of Rawlings\u27s novel maintain a healthy independence from the outside world through their regional network of family and neighbors, Harry Morgan is trapped in his role as exploited laborer, caught up in the corruption and hypocrisy of that larger world

Detecting continuous structural heterogeneity in single-molecule localization microscopy data

    No full text
Fusion of multiple chemically identical complexes, so-called particles, in localization microscopy, can improve the signal-to-noise ratio and overcome under-labeling. To this end, structural homogeneity of the data must be assumed. Biological heterogeneity, however, could be present in the data originating from distinct conformational variations or (continuous) variations in particle shapes. We present a prior-knowledge-free method for detecting continuous structural variations with localization microscopy. Detecting this heterogeneity leads to more faithful fusions and reconstructions of the localization microscopy data as their heterogeneity is taken into account. In experimental datasets, we show the continuous variation of the height of DNA origami tetrahedrons imaged with 3D PAINT and of the radius of Nuclear Pore Complexes imaged in 2D with STORM. In simulation, we study the impact on the heterogeneity detection pipeline of Degree Of Labeling and of structural variations in the form of two independent modes.ImPhys/Rieger groupImPhys/Imaging PhysicsImPhys/Computational Imagin
