Understanding the formation of gas bubbles at liquid–liquid interfaces

    No full text
The formation of bubbles at liquid–liquid interfaces is challenging to explain because gas pockets cannot be stabilized by cracks on solid impurities. Experiments show that a difference in the gas solubilities of two immiscible liquids provides a gas reservoir, which allows gas to accumulate at the interface, leading to bubble formation

Ecological studies toward the management of an Antarctic tourist landing site (Penguin Island, South Shetland Islands)

    No full text
Increasing tourism in the Antarctic Peninsula region concerns scientists, policy-makers, and tourist companies with its potential negative effects on wildlife. Site-specific ecological studies have been initiated to examine differences in population dynamics and distribution of animals as well as their behavioural and physiological reactions to humans. Penguin Island (southeast of King George Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) is frequently visited by tourists due to its high species diversity and aesthetic value. In two seasons, the authors conducted a bird census and studied behaviour and heart-rate changes of southern giant petrels and skuas relating to tourist visits on Penguin Island. Management recommendations are given, based on the study results. The protection of southern giant petrels should be increased by having a minimum distance of 50 m for all visitors. The eastern, southern, and western parts of the island should not be visited and should serve as refuge areas. The wildlife experience for tourists can still be enjoyed by concentrating visits to the northern and central part of Penguin Island. Use of a specific path to localise impacts in a prescribed area is recommended

    Huttonella L. Pfeiffer 1856

Subgenus Huttonella L. Pfeiffer, 1856 Ennea (Huttonella) L. Pfeiffer, 1856: 174. Gulella (Huttonella) — Zilch, 1960: 570. Huttonella — Schileyko, 2000: 821. Type species. Pupa bicolor Hutton, 1834, by subsequent designation (Nevill, 1878: 6). Remarks. The type species of Huttonella has a pantropical distribution (Berry, 1965; Simone, 2013), and it probably originated from Asia (Naggs, 1989; Rowson & Herbert, 2016). Molecular phylogeny showed that it is closely related to “true” Gulella L. Pfeiffer, 1856 (Rowson et al., 2010), and it was treated as a subgenus of Gulella in the most recent revision (Rowson & Herbert, 2016).Published as part of Páll-Gergely, Barna, Hunyadi, András, Grego, Jozef, Sajan, Sheikh, Tripathy, Basudev & Chen, Zhe-Yu, 2020, A review of the Diapheridae (Gastropoda: Eupulmonata: Streptaxoidea), with special emphasis on India and Myanmar, pp. 682-718 in Raffles Bulletin of Zoology 68 on page 712, DOI: 10.26107/RBZ-2020-0083, http://zenodo.org/record/534976

Managing Technology Risks Through Technological Proficiency: Guidance for Local Governments

    No full text
Like most organizations, local governments face challenges managing technology, the critical resource to meet evolving public service expectations. But benefits associated with adapting the latest technology come with risks, some more apparent than others. This report details the problems facing municipal officials as they try to maximize the benefits of technology for their communities and constituents in the face of cybersecurity, legal, operational, financial, reputational and societal risks. The report concludes that top municipal officials must create and maintain an environment of “technological proficiency.” That includes creating a process for making technology decisions, developing an annually reviewed technology plan that is tied to the budget, instituting a “cyber hygiene” training program for all employees in proper computer security practices, and making sure that agency technology is competently managed. The report is supplemented by a "Best Practices and Resources Guide" that organizations can use to achieve technology proficiency. It provides best practices based on an organization's technology profile.Report and Supplement were prepared for the Municipal Excess Liability Fund, a joint insurance fund of over 600 New Jersey local government agencies

    Kavitation an Flüssig‐Flüssig‐Grenzflächen

Tourism Growth and Proposed Management Solutions in the Fildes Peninsula Region (King George Island, Antarctica)

    No full text
Tourism is a rapidly growing industry in the Antarctic, particularly on King George Island where wildlife areas, research stations, or their vicinity are frequently visited. A comprehensive assessment of the environment and human activities in the Fildes Peninsula region was conducted, and spatiotemporal patterns were analyzed. Additionally, opinions on tourism of station members were surveyed. Visitor activity is increasing and diversifying. There is thus some conflict with conservation, research, and logistics, although it is currently local and temporary. Increasing human activity and its possible cumulative effects should be monitored and appropriately managed. On the basis of our findings, site-specific guidelines and visitor zones (e.g., within an "Antarctic Specially Managed Area") are recommended
