Reliability and validity of the Italian version of the 14-item resilience scale
Background: In recent years resilience has gained clinical relevance in sociological, psychological, and medical disciplines, and a lot of scales measuring resilience have been developed and have been utilized in the western countries. The aim of the study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the 14-item Resilience Scale (RS-14), by describing its validity and reliability. As agreed with the authors of the original English version of the RS-14, it was translated into Italian. Then the standard procedure for back-translation was followed. Methods: In total, 150 participants among the nursing and professional education students of the University of Insubria of Varese and health workers of the “ASST dei Sette Laghi-Ospedale di Circolo” of Varese were enrolled. The responses to the questionnaires were collected only from the students and the health workers between the ages of 18 and 65 years who gave their consent to participate in the study from April to September 2015. A subsample of 26 students and health workers was retested on the RS-14, 5 weeks after the first assessment. The questionnaires were handed out to 214 people, and 150 sets of questionnaires (70%) were returned, of which eight were subsequently removed because 60% of the answers were missing. In order to ensure anonymity, every completed questionnaire was identified only via a code. Results: No significant differences were found between the mean values of the resilience scores between women (76.1) and men (76.3), with unpaired t-test -0.08 and P0.93. Similarly, no difference between resilience scores were found between mean age group of 18-25 years (75.3) and 26-65 years (78.7), with t-test 1.6. The overall Cronbach’s alpha of the RS-14 is 0.88, P0.10. The RS-14 is negatively correlated with the Beck Depression Inventory-Primary Care Version and the 12-item General Health Questionnaire and positively correlated with the World Health Organization Quality of Life-Brief Version. The test-retest reliability, assessed on the 26 subjects 5 weeks after the first evaluation, highlighted an intraclass correlation coefficient value equal to 0.65. Factor analysis retains three factors, and it considers the factor loadings 0.40: RS-14-06 (‘I am determined’) is loaded on all the factors and RS-14-12 (‘In an emergency, I am someone people can generally rely on’) is not loaded on any factor. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the Italian RS-14 has psychometric properties with a good level of internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha 0.88), an adequate concurrent validity, verified by relationships with the other scales and as it was expected from literature, and an acceptable test-retest reliability
Coexistence of two vector order parameters: A holographic model for ferromagnetic superconductivity
We study a generalization of the standard holographic p-wave superconductor featuring two interacting vector order parameters. Basing our argument on the symmetry and linear response properties of the model, we propose it as a holographic effective theory describing a strongly coupled ferromagnetic superconductor. We show that the two order parameters undergo concomitant condensations as a manifestation of an intrinsically interlaced charge/spin dynamics. Such intertwined dynamics is confirmed by the study of the transport properties. We characterize thoroughly the equilibrium and the linear response (i.e. optical conductivity and spin susceptibility) of the model at hand by means of a probe approximation analysis. Some insight about the effects of backreaction in the normal phase can be gained by analogy with the s-wave unbalanced holographic superconductor. © 2014 The Author(s).SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Effects of a 4400 km ultra-cycling non-competitive race and related training on body composition and circulating progenitors differentiation
Background: NorthCape4000 (NC4000) is the most participated ultra-endurance cycling race. Eight healthy male Caucasian amateur cyclists were evaluated: (a) before starting the preparation period; (b) in the week preceding NC4000 (after the training period); (c) after NC4000 race, with the aim to identify the effects of ultra-cycling on body composition, aerobic capacity and biochemical parameters as well as on the differentiation of progenitor cells. Methods: Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) assessed body composition; cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) evaluated aerobic capacity. Differentiation of circulating progenitor cells was evaluated by analyzing the modulation in the expression of relevant transcription factors. In addition, in vitro experiments were performed to investigate the effects of sera of NC4000 participants on adipogenesis and myogenesis. The effects of NC4000 sera on Sestrins and Sirtuin modulation and the promotion of brown adipogenesis in progenitor cells was investigated as well. Two-tailed Student's paired-test was used to perform statistical analyses. Results: We observed fat mass decrease after training as well as after NC4000 performance; we also recorded that vitamin D and lipid profiles were affected by ultra-cycling. In addition, our findings demonstrated that post-NC4000 participant's pooled sera exerted a positive effect in stimulating myogenesis and in inducing brown adipogenesis in progenitor cells. Conclusions: The training program and Ultra-cycling lead to beneficial effects on body composition and biochemical lipid parameters, as well as changes in differentiation of progenitor cells, with significant increases in brown adipogenesis and in MYOD levels
Quality by Design in lead optimization: a new strategy to address productivity in drug discovery
Assessing brain free fraction in early drug discovery
Importance of the field: The incorporation of brain tissue binding routinely in CNS drug discovery screening strategies has markedly changed the way CNS drug discovery is performed and is proving to be a valuable tool in identifying new therapies for CNS diseases. For many years emphasis has been placed on the magnitude of the brain to blood ratio, the bigger the better, even though, in many cases, brain total concentration (C-brain) has no or, at best, poor correlation with receptor occupancy/pharmacodynamic readout. Today, C-brain values measured during in vivo experiments are corrected for the fraction unbound measured through in vitro experiments using brain tissue homogenate or brain tissue slice to obtain an estimate of the brain unbound concentration (C-u,C- brain), and this has been demonstrated across a range of CNS targets to give a much better correlaton with receptor occupancy/ pharmacodynamic readout. This apparently simple change in CNS lead optimisation strategy has de facto revolutionised the vision of the brain penetration concepts.Areas covered in this review: This review will provide an overview of the use and applications of assessing brain free fraction to determine C-u,C-brain.Take home message: Assessing brain free fraction to determine C-u,C-brain in CNS lead optimisation strategies is the surrogate of choice for rapidly assessing biophase concentration for the majority of CNS targets.</p
Los viaductos de la autopista Savona-Ceva (Italia)
The Savone-Ceva motor road is the last section of the great European highway, known as the seventh meridian. It extends from Hamburg to Savona, crosses Switzerland, and enters Italy at Saint Bernard's. This last section has a mean height of more than 400 m, and all the characteristics of a mountain road. It involves a large number of tunnels, cuttings, and embankments, thanks to which the curves and slopes are gentle. The structures supporting the road are of many kinds, and each type has been separately allocated to contractors, although an initial project was prepared by the technical directors of the whole scheme. This initial project included the choice of the road axis and the obtention of information on the subsoil. Along the more important sections of the road special soundings were carried out, so that there was a considerably unitj/ of initial planning.
The arrangement for awarding contracts involved a number of conditions and data which the bidding contractors could check over the proposed site of the motor road. One of the principal conditions required the use of supports in the form of groups of columns with a trapezoidal plan distribution. The purpose of this was to fit better the decks of the large number of viaduct decks, which have a curved outline.
As there are many such viaducts, in this article the author summarizes the more significant details, and describes the most important general features.

NbTi Thin-Film SRF Cavities for Dark Matter Search
The search for dark matter is now looking at axion-like particles (ALPs) as a very promising candidate to understand our universe. Within the framework of haloscope detectors for ALPs, we explore the performances of NbTi thin-film coatings on Cu resonating cavities to investigate the presence of axions in the range of 35-45-μeV mass. In this work, two different compositions of NbTi thin films are studied, and their performances in high magnetic field are presented. The chemical treatments and dc magnetron sputtering details of the preparation of three 9-GHz resonant cavities and a 7-GHz resonant cavity are shown along with the cavities' quality factor measurements at different applied magnetic fields
