La nostalgia della persuasione come categoria ermeneutica. Kubrick e DeLillo
The essay starts by addressing to modernism and then reaches the threshold of the new millennium, to stress the importance of what Michelstaedter called La persuasione e la rettorica (persuasion and rhetoric) in the literary space. The excursus focuses mainly on the relationship between Author and Characters and crosses works such as Sei personaggi in cerca d’autore by Pirandello or Kafka's The Castle in the Modernism, Paul Auster's New York Trilogy or Tarantino's Pulp Fiction in the Postmodernism, and finally focuses on Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut and DeLillo's Underworld to emphasize its paradigmatic value in relation to the notion of nostalgia for persuasion
The phenomenon of authorial mediation has become especially prolific in recent literature, where it represents a distinctive characteristic of the merging of forms of the novel and essay. To investigate the evolution of authorial mediation over the last forty years, this paper focuses on two works by Milan Kundera, "The Book of Laughter and Forgetting" (1979) and "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" (1984), and two by Emmanuel Carrère, "Limonov" (2011) and "The Kingdom" (2014). Through analysis of excerpts from these books, this article illustrates the ways in which each author exemplifies one of two different modes of interaction between novel and essay: a fictional form (the novel-essay) and a non-fictional one (the narrative essay)
(...) E mi venne subito voglia di tradurlo in esametri. Tutti quei nomi a catalogo! Quelle enumerazioni, successioni, quella serie di paesaggi, di sentimenti, di figure straordinarie e vere! Io ne rimasi e ne sono rapito!” (26 agosto 1881).
Despite being praised by poets such as T.S. Eliot, W.H. Auden and Seamus Heaney, David Jones is still an «awful outsider»—in his own words—in the canon of contemporary poetry. Focusing in particular on In Parenthesis (1937) and its critical reception, this essay outlines the meaning of the poem in the corpus of writings on the Great War and explores Jones’ relationship with the literary generations of his time
In this essay I will contend that a significant turn has occurred during the Sixties, ending up in the establishment of what I will refer in the article as the «testimonial paradigm»: that is, the set of textual devices that structures a variety of codes and genres in the contemporary aesthetic production. In the first part, I will go through the historical events that triggered the turn: the Eichmann trial, Wiesel’s famous claim on the Holocaust and May 1968. In the second part, I will examine the mechanisms that govern the action of the testimonial paradigm: the narrative situation set by the author, the contract signed with the reader and the pragmatic register that results from the former two
