In this interview, originally recorded in-person at Paradise Villa Assisted Living and Memory Care in Live Oak, California, Francine Tabasa Lopes speaks with Una Lynch, Christina Ayson Plank, and Meleia Simon-Reynolds, members of the Watsonville is in the Heart team. Francine shares stories about her parents, Jesus Torrente Tabasa and Rosita "Rosie" Dionisio Tabasa-Estrada. She explains how her parents migrated to the United States from the Philippines during the 1920s and 1930s and eventually settled in Watsonville. Francine discusses Jesus's agricultural labor and the restaurants and other businesses both of her parents owned and operated in Watsonville. She provides details about Rosie's restaurant business, Philippine Gardens (originally Oriental Cafe). She describes the restaurant's various locations in downtown Watsonville and the gambling operations that existed within the restaurant. Francine also reflects on her experiences growing up under the care of her maternal grandmother, Benita Carpio Dionisio

The short life of the volcanic island New Late'iki (Tonga) analyzed by multi-sensor remote sensing data
Satellite-based Earth observation plays a key role for monitoring volcanoes, especially those which are located in remote areas and which very often are not observed by a terrestrial monitoring network. In our study we jointly analyzed data from thermal (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer MODIS and Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite VIIRS), optical (Operational Land Imager and Multispectral Instrument) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) (Sentinel-1 and TerraSAR-X) satellite sensors to investigate the mid-October 2019 surtseyan eruption at Late'ki Volcano, located on the Tonga Volcanic Arc. During the eruption, the remains of an older volcanic island formed in 1995 collapsed and a new volcanic island, called New Late'iki was formed. After the 12 days long lasting eruption, we observed a rapid change of the island's shape and size, and an erosion of this newly formed volcanic island, which was reclaimed by the ocean two months after the eruption ceased. This fast erosion of New Late'iki Island is in strong contrast to the over 25 years long survival of the volcanic island formed in 1995

Dan reflects on his parents', Mariano Doctor Fallorina Sr. and Angelina Nicolas Fallorina, home gardening practices. He describes the produce Mariano grew at home using the skills he honed as an agricultural laborer and the flower gardens Angelina tended throughout her life. Dan explains that gardening was a way his parents relaxed after long days working in Watsonville agricultural fields and canneries. He also discusses how his parents shared the products of their gardens with friends and members of their community. America’s Toll Roads Heritage: The Achievements of Private Initiative in the 19th Century
Private toll roads shaped and accommodated trade and migration routes, leaving social and political imprints on the communities that debated and supported them. Private road building came and went in waves throughout the 19th century and across the country. All told, between 2,500 and 3,200 companies successfully financed, built, and operated their toll road. Although most of these roads operated for only a fraction of the 100+ period, the combined mileage of private toll roads that operated at any point in time would be in range of 30,000 to 52,000 miles. Test report on cyclic behaviour of plank-joist connections of samples extracted from existing buildings
This report presents the materials, experiment setups and testing procedures directed at determining the back-bone curves that describe the plank-joist connections of samples extracted from existing unreinforced masonry houses. The last section contains an overview of the results obtained for the different specimens tested. The use of the outcome of these experiments are twofold:- They provide input for FEM models to predict the mechanical behaviour of full size floors (diaphragms) made of joists with planks nailed to them.- They provide input for the selection of materials to build up replicas of diaphragms.For the plank-joist connection a distinction is made between nailed and screwed connections. The testing started with nailed connections, which is common use in pre-war houses. The loading is applied in three ways: loading the plank perpendicular to the joist and parallel to the joist, as well as rotation of the plank relative to the joist. Monitoring the Mauna Loa (Hawaii) eruption of November–December 2022 from space: Results from GOES-R, Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8/9 observations
Mauna Loa, one of the most actives volcanoes on Earth, is a shield volcano, located on the Island of Hawaii (USA). On 27 November 2022, after about 38 years of quiescence, a new eruptive activity took place at the Moku'a over bar weoweo caldera, continuing in the following days (i.e. until 10 December) from the fissure vents opening on the Northeast Rift Zone. In this work, we investigate the Mauna Loa November - December 2022 eruption from space, integrating the information from different satellite sensors. The analysis of short-wave infrared (SWIR) data, at 10 min temporal resolution, from the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI), aboard the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites - R series (GOES-R), performed through the Normalised Hotspot Indices (NHI), indicates that the Mauna Loa eruption started on 27 November in between 23:10-23:20 LT (28 November at 09:10-09:20 UTC). The same analysis shows the increase of thermal activity and its progressive reduction from the early morning of 28 November, in agreement with the eruption migration from the summit caldera to the Northeast Rift Zone. By analysing the second phase of eruption through SWIR data from the Multispectral Instrument (MSI) and Operational Land Imager (OLI), respectively aboard Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8/9 satellites, we estimated a maximum lava flow length of 17 km. Moreover, we retrieved values of the volcanic radiative power (VRP) up to 65 GW, and a time-averaged discharge rate (TADR) of similar to 1000 (+/- 500) m(3)/s. These results show that SWIR observations, at different spatial and temporal resolution, may give an important contribution to the monitoring, mapping and characterisation of intense lava effusions
Predicting Authorship and Author Traits from Keystroke Dynamics
Written text transmits a good deal of non-verbal information related to the author’s identity and social factors, such as age, gender and personality. However, it is less known to what extent behavioral biometric traces transmit such information. We use typist data to study the predictiveness of authorship, and present first experiments on predicting both age and gender from keystroke dynamics. Our results show that the model based on keystroke features leads to significantly higher accuracies for authorship than the text-based system, while being two orders of magnitude smaller. For user attribute prediction, the best approach is to combine the two, suggesting that extra- linguistic factors are disclosed to a larger degree in written text, while author identity is better transmitted in typing behavior
