Images of Inequality: AI Created Depictions of Ancient Social Stratification

    No full text
The study of historical inequality has gained increasing attention in recent years, particularly in archaeology. Our understanding of the past is shaped by contemporary perspectives, especiallywhen examining concepts such as inequality, which were perceived differently in antiquity than they are today. This article explores how artificial intelligence (AI) contributes to the visualization of ancient inequality by generating images based on textual prompts. Focusing on the ancient Roman world, it examines the biases embedded in AI-generated images and their implications for historical understanding. AI image generators, such as DeepAI and Adobe Firefly, produce visuals by drawing on extensive training datasets of images and captions. As AI-generated images become more prevalent – often used alongside textual narratives and oral presentations – they have thepotential to shape public and scholarly perceptions of historical subjects, including ancient inequality. This article addresses four key questions: 1. What do AI image generators producewhen given prompts related to antiquity and inequality? 2. What can the generated images reveal about the training data used in these AI models? 3. How useful are AI-generated images for studying ancient inequality and its reception? 4. What broader insights can these images offer for the study of ancient social structures? To investigate these questions, this study analyzes AI-generated images of inequality using three levels of prompts: general (“ancient”), more specific (“Roman”), and highly specific(“Pompeii”), and with different types of other definitions, such as social, wealth, and health inequality. The results reveal that AI-generated images primarily depict outdoor scenes featuring people and architectural elements, often including columns and similar supporting structures. A key finding is that the visual styles of these AI-generated images reflect the biases of their underlying datasets. DeepAI tends to generate images resembling early modern and modernpaintings, suggesting that its training data associates these artistic traditions with depictions of ancient inequality. Firefly, by contrast, produces images with a more video game-like aesthetic, likely influenced by social media and commercial sites. Although AI-generated images offer valuable insights into how ancient material has been received and reinterpreted over time, they do not explicitly highlight ancient social hierarchies or inequality. Recognizing their relevance to historical inequality requires extensive knowledge of both ancient history and later artistic traditions. Moreover, AI-generated images inherently reflect and amplify the biases of their source material. Since much of the surviving ancient literature represents elite perspectives, these biases are embedded in the AI-generated reconstructions. Additionally, the training material – often in the form of historical paintings/pictures – likely embodies the preconceptions of the artists at the time the originals were created. These images serve as starting points, which the AI modifies using the full range of textual connotations associated with the concepts it is prompted to generate, further compounding the layers of historical and cultural bias

Pompeian peristyle gardens as a means of socioeconomic representation

This thesis studies the Pompeian peristyle gardens as a means of socioeconomic representation. Gardens featuring at least one colonnade are the main criteria for consideration. The data for the study was collected during extensive field seasons at the site, and by reading the excavation reports and other written descriptions of the gardens. Pompeian studies have previously connected the peristyle garden strongly to the function of socioeconomic representation, meaning that they were used for displaying a person’s wealth and social status. This interpretation, however, has been built on only a few select examples, and this study instead takes a whole-city wide perspective and examines all 251 peristyles gardens of Pompeii. The aim is to study how the peristyles were utilized for socioeconomic display and how the peristyles reflect their owners’ social status and wealth. In addition, this work investigates the different means of socioeconomic display used in the peristyles, and how the garden architecture and decoration of the peristyles influenced the other peristyle gardens of the city. The study takes a critical approach to the top-down model proposed by the previous scholarship on the Pompeian house. This model regards the lower classes as mere imitators of the elites. There are several similar features in the peristyle gardens and some ideas are likely transferred from the upper classes to the lower classes, but there are also significant differences between the peristyles gardens, and some peristyles suggest that the lower classes had developed innovative means to display their wealth and social status – not just passively mimicking the upper classes. The research methods can be divided into two phases. The first phase is the reconstruction of all the peristyles gardens, which includes a critical interpretation of the sources to explore the state of the gardens during the last phase before the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE. The second phase compares the reconstructed peristyles. The statistical and comparative analysis allows the exploration of what was considered normal or average in the Pompeian peristyles, which in turn permits us to suggest what was special and used as a means to impress and display high socioeconomic status. The result of this study is a classification of the peristyles into seven groups: opulent, large full, ornamental, large painting, imitation, minor decoration, and architectural peristyles. The four first mentioned types have relatively clear evidence that supports their interpretation as important means of socioeconomic display. The imitation peristyles attempt to create the image of the opulent peristyles, but their scarce decoration indicates that they were not planned for significant display purpose. The same conclusion can be arrived at for the minor decoration peristyles, except that for these peristyles there is not even an attempt to make the space very similar architecturally to the upper-class peristyles. The last group, the architectural peristyles, had hardly any decoration, which suggests that they were not planned to be used for display and that these peristyles were built specifically for their architectural functions: providing air and light for the house and guiding movement inside the house. The last group is clearly the largest; it has 101 peristyles while the other groups have 15–32. To sum up, more than half of the peristyles did not have any planned display function, whereas 97 peristyles – the opulent, large full, ornamental and large painting peristyles – did. Even though the peristyles were commonly built for purposes other than display, all of them still reflect the economic standing of their owners. Generally, the owners of the opulent peristyles were the richest, and the level of wealth declines in the order of the peristyle groups as presented, meaning the owners of the architectural peristyles were most likely the poorest.Väitöskirja tarkastelee Pompejin peristyylipuutarhoja sosioekonomisen edustamisen muotona.

Ambivalent republican and Roman models for Washington DC

    No full text
Although Washington D.C. is one of the best known capitals of democracies in the world, this article demonstrates that the representation of republican and democratic values in its architectural and city planning were largely dismissed in its earliest design phase, whereas ancient Roman - usually Imperial - examples were valued instead. The discussion focuses on two aspects: the grandeur of the space and the initial absence of a location for the Supreme Court. The planning process is mainly reconstructed through letters and visual representations describing the earliest plans, focusing on the main characters in the process: Pierre L'Enfant and Thomas Jefferson. L'Enfant is often seen to be advocating for designs based on authoritarian examples, whereas Jefferson is seen to be a flag-bearer for designs that represent more republican values. The article demonstrates, however, that neither man actually considered republican elements to be important for the city-planning or architecture of the new capital; instead, ancient Rome can be seen as a model behind the plan, as Rome ambiguously suggested both Imperial grandeur and republicanism.Peer reviewe

Pylväskäytävien suojassa : Pompejilainen peristyylipuutarha sosioekonomisen edustamisen muotona

Peristyylipuutarhoja on 168 kappaletta. Pompejin peristyyleissä on pylväskäytäviä yhdestä neljään. Usein puutarhaosa on erotettu pylväskäytävistä aidalla. Irtaimia löytöjä on peristyyleissä monenlaisia.
