Hedonic Prices and House Numbers: The Influence of Feng Shui
In contemporary practice, feng shui incorporates a wide range of concepts considered to affect a person’s luck. These include traditional ideas about site selection and building design, as well as newer beliefs about the “luckiness” of certain numbers. Focusing on an area with a relatively high percentage of Chinese households in Auckland, New Zealand, this paper uses hedonic price analysis to investigate whether house values are affected by lucky and unlucky numbers. Sales transactions for 1989 to 1996 are used in this analysis. The results demonstrate that lucky house numbers are capitalised into house values.Feng shui, hedonic price model, lucky, New Zealand

Character Recognition in Endangered Archives: Shui Manuscripts Dataset, Detection and Application Realization
Shui manuscripts provide a historical testimony of the national identity and spirit of the Shui people. In response to the lack of a high-quality Shui manuscripts dataset, we collected Shui manuscript images in the Shui area and used various methods to enhance them. Through our efforts, we created a well-labeled and sizable Shui manuscripts dataset, named Shuishu_T, which is the largest of its kind. Then, we applied target detection technology for Shui manuscript characters recognition. Specifically, we compared the advantages and disadvantages of Faster R-CNN, you only look once (YOLO), and single shot multibox detector (SSD), and subsequently chose Faster R-CNN to detect and recognize Shui manuscript characters. We trained and tested 111 classes of Shui manuscript characters with Faster R-CNN and achieved an average recognition rate of 87.8%. Finally, we designed a WeChat applet that can be used to quickly identify Shui manuscript characters in images obtained by scanning Shui manuscripts with a mobile phone. This work provides a basis for realizing the recognition of characters in Shui manuscripts on mobile terminals. Our research enables the intangible cultural heritage of the Shui people to be preserved, promoted, and shared, which is of great significance for the conservation and inheritance of Shui manuscripts

Feng Shui as a site design tool: Assessing conditions of human comfort in urban places.
Feng Shui as a site design tool seeks a different spectrum of criteria in the observation and assessment of a site than that of contemporary site design. It is a method based on the understanding and observation of the energetic conditions within and surrounding a site. Energetic conditions are perceptible. It requires an additional level of awareness to be able to identify what it is that causes a space to feel the way it does. Feng Shui may provide the additional level of consideration that when incorporated in the design process, facilitates spaces that may more effectively fulfill their purpose and feel good to the people using them. This study assessed a variety of existing urban places in Tucson, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, and Sedona, AZ. for conditions of human comfort based on (1) Feng Shui principles, and (2) contemporary site design recommendations. Current research on the topic of Feng Shui is limited to its application in land planning. This qualitative study applied the principles of Feng Shui as criteria in the evaluation of urban spaces. Results of the study indicate that well designed places from a Feng Shui standpoint were also perceived as well designed from a contemporary site design vantage. The outcome suggests the value of incorporating Feng Shui as a tool in the site design process used by Western designers
FENG SHUI METHODE IN INTERIOR AND INTERIOR ELEMENTS DESIGN
The modern way of life does not give us enough time to fully live with nature and the influence of environment on the welfare and progress of fate. Today we are faced with great technological advances and still less knowledge about nature. Wealth is measured by the amount of time that you can afford. Awareness of the fact that this is not possible to buy or replace it with any material value and that this is achievable with a higher level of consciousness, we open the door to freedom and timelessness. This paradise is beyond the reach of our mind and is available only rarely. Feng Shui also directs us in this direction, the used calculation methods are rising or dropping life energy at different times, different places, houses and flats in different types of people. Various methods can determine the most favorable places and adjust the calculation of the construction and equipping of houses or flats. Each year many Chinese people go to consult with astrologers on the movement of life energy, they are invol

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
"Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
