Reactions to Supporters of the 2016 Presidential Candidates

    No full text
Two experiments were carried out to explore responses to supporters of 2016 Presidential candidates. In Study 1, a field experiment was carried out on the effect of political affiliation on an individual’s willingness to reciprocate a smile. The prediction that more participants (90 females, 90 males) on the SHU campus would return a smile to confederates wearing Trump vs. Clinton vs. a Neutral t-shirt was not supported. In Study 2, 253 participants volunteered to participate in a social perception experiment in which they rated confederates wearing a neutral, Trump, or Clinton for President t-shirt. In line with the hypothesis, MANOVA results showed that Trump supporters were perceived as more prejudiced (p \u3c .003) and Clinton supporters as more liberal (p \u3c .000)

A Chronology of International Business Cycles Through Non-parametric Decoding

    No full text
This paper introduces a new empirical strategy for the characterization of business cycles. It combines non-parametric decoding methods that classify a series into expansions and recessions but does not require specification of the underlying stochastic process generating the data. It then uses network analysis to combine the signals obtained from different economic indicators to generate a unique chronology. These methods generate a record of peak and trough dates comparable, and in one sense superior, to the NBER’s own chronology. The methods are then applied to 22 OECD countries to obtain a global business cycle chronology.decoding, hierarchical factor segmentation, network analysis, business cycles

The Career Development Quarterly : Author and Article Characteristics from 2000 to 2019

    No full text
Author and article characteristics in CDQ articles from 2000 to 2019 were analyzed for trends over time with a special focus on the past 5 years and upon research articles. At this time (2015–2019), nearly 60% of CDQ authors are women, and only 5% of authors are not affiliated with a university. Nearly a fourth of all lead authors reside outside of the United States. From 2015 to 2019, nearly 85% of all CDQ articles published were research articles, and qualitative studies increased significantly. Nearly all other methodological, participant, sample, and statistical characteristics were stable over time. Report of effect sizes and study validity trended toward increases over time, while 81% of research studies reported relevant study reliability results

On T-Pure and Almost Pure Exact Sequences of LCA Groups

    No full text
A proper short exact sequence in the category of locally compact abelian groups is said to be t-pure if φ(A) is a topologically pure subgroup of B, that is, if for all positive integers n. We establish conditions under which t-pure exact sequences split and determine those locally compact abelian groups K ⊕ D (where K is compactly generated and D is discrete) which are t-pure injective or t-pure projective. Calling the extension (*) almost pure if for all positive integers n, we obtain a complete description of the almost pure injectives and almost pure projectives in the category of locally compact abelian groups
