Buddhism in the thought of Liang Shu-ming = 梁漱溟思想與佛教
Liang Shu-ming (1893–1988) is one of the most influential thinkers of contemporary China. Most studies on Liang Shu-ming focus on his Confucian thought and his role as the forerunner of the New Confucianism movement. However, Liang Shu-ming was a devoted Buddhist in his youth. He employed Buddhist concepts and terminology extensively in his works, and publicly declared himself a Buddhist in his old age. Hence there have been heated debates among scholars to determine whether Liang Shu-ming was a Buddhist or a Confucianist. The present thesis analyses in detail Liang Shu-ming’s central writings and teachings; with a view to highlighting the importance of Buddhism to his thought.
Liang Shu-ming grew up at a time when China was increasingly exposed to Western influences. When new style intellectuals were denouncing traditional knowledge, Liang Shu-ming chose to believe in Buddhism, and proclaimed in his early works that Buddhism was superior to Western philosophy. He argued that only Buddhism could provide the ultimate solution to the cardinal human problem of suffering, that Buddhist ideas were not as restrictive as Western philosophical concepts (e.g. idealism, materialism), that the supramundane absorption advocated by Buddhism was superior to secular intelligence.
Liang Shu-ming declared himself a Confucianist by the time he reached middle age, but his works continued to use a large number of Buddhist notions and terms. He constructed his epistemology around Yogācāra concepts, and evaluated culture mainly from the Buddhist standpoint. Especially significant for our purpose are his claim that Buddhism is the highest religion, and his prediction of the revival of Buddhism at the final stage of development of human civilization.
Buddhism occupied an even more important position in his late works, in which he, among other things, compared and contrasted the teachings of Buddhism with those of Confucianism and Daoism. He discussed in some depth the similarities and dissimilarities in their understanding of human nature, the purpose of life, the significance of bodily and spiritual cultivation, etc, with the aim of demonstrating that Buddhism will eventually become the main stream of world culture in the future.
The thesis also investigates the personal, social and historical factors contributing to Liang Shu-ming’s early belief in Buddhism, his shift from Buddhism to Confucianism in his middle years, and his return to Buddhist in his old age, so as to determine whether he was ultimately a Confucianist or a Buddhist.published_or_final_versionChineseDoctoralDoctor of Philosoph
Essays on high-skilled migration
This dissertation is comprised of three essays that focus on high‐skilled migrations and how these are influenced by public policy and their economic impacts.
The first essay links finance theory to labor economics and political economy in the context of migration and immigration policy. Using event study analysis, I measure the impact of immigration policy on the profit of employers and shareholders, in particular the American Competitiveness and Workforce Improvement Act (ACWIA) of 1998 nearly doubled the available number of H‐1B visas for skilled foreign workers in FY 1999. The empirical results show that top H‐1B visa user industries enjoyed significant and positive
excess returns with the passage of the ACWIA of 1998, while industries with little need for H‐1B visas experienced no significant changes. Robustness checks including international comparisons, nonparametric modeling and a sample‐split Chow structural break test support the results. In the second essay, I investigate the findings of the first essay by employing two multi‐factor models—Fama‐French three‐factor model and Fama‐French‐momentum
four‐factor model. Fama and French (1993) claim that the three‐factor model does a better job isolating the firm‐specific components of returns. In contrast, Campbell, Lo and Mackinlay (1997) argue that in practice the gains from employing multi‐factor
models for modeling the normal returns are limited. The results support the point of Campbell, Lo and Mackinlay (1997). In the third essay, I use microdata on immigrants from the 1990 and 2000 U.S. censuses to examine the growing earnings differentials between foreign‐born Taiwanese and all other foreign‐born immigrants. By decomposing the earnings gap, I
show that over one‐third of this gap (36% in 1990, 37% in 2000) can be attributed to the better endowment (higher education) of the Taiwanese. Among foreign‐born Taiwanese from 1960 to 1999, 60% of the master degrees, 80% of the professional degrees and
92% of the doctorate degrees were earned in the United States. The growing numbers and rising percentage of U.S. earned degrees among the Taiwanese indicate their higher earnings relative to other immigrants in 1990 and 2000 can be attributed to their successful economic assimilation into the United States.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Shu‐Ming Li

About the rhymes in Tangut verses : Reanalysis of Tangut rhyming poetry in San shi shu ming yan ji wen
There is a unique Tangut material in Institute of Oriental Studies (St.-Petersburg branch), inventory No. 4166 titled 『三世属明言集文 (San shi shu ming yan ji wen)』. It has some rhyming verses which would contribute to the study of Tangut phonology. The verses were accompanied by the comment [Figure omitted] 'pay attention to sound (rhyme)'. This kind of material has not been well-known except the report of Nishida (1976). The aim of this paper is linguistic reanalysis of Tangut rhyming poetry in view of the Tangut phonology based on the rhyme dictionaries. Tangut verses in question have following features; 1) Almost rhyme ends in the particular front vowels identified in Tangut rhyme dictionaries. The cardinal vowel of rhyming is/ e/ which has been reconstructed from other materials. 2) Those vowels almost belong to the third grade in rhyme table. Main correspondence between the rhymes is as follows; [Table omitted
