The Patel trials: further evidence of the need to reform the Griffith Codes

    No full text
This article argues that the two trials of Dr Jayant Patel for criminal medical negligence under s 288 of the Criminal Code 1899 Act (Qld) highlight the inadequacies of the duty provisions in the Griffith Codes of Queensland and Western Australia. The difficulties with these duty provisions extend beyond causation and go to the heart of the construction of the Griffith Codes. The fundamental problem lies in the wording of s 23 of both the Queensland and the Western Australia Codes, the principal section dealing with criminal responsibility, which allows a prosecution for criminal negligence under two alternative routes with different standards of proof, and the importation of common law criminal negligence into the duty provisions in the absence of a specified fault element in the relevant Code sections. It is further contended that other criminal law jurisdictions in Australia, such as the Criminal Code 1995 (Cth), offer a better model for the prosecution of criminal negligence cases that flow from breach of a specified duty. The article has greatly benefited from comments provided to the author by Justice HG Fryberg, who conducted the second Patel trial

The beginning of a beautiful relationship: A case study on an immersive filmmaking process

In 2007 filmmaker (and co-author), Shreepali Patel was asked to document an art installation, Journey (2007) curated by the human rights activist and actress, Emma Thompson. The installation recorded a journey of a young trafficked woman based on the first-person testimony by a young girl trafficked through the offer of hope and a better life. Journey (2007) was designed to be an experiential and physically immersive experience which would allow the audience to ‘feel for 5 minutes’ what it would be like to be trafficked. The installation consisted of 7 containers each designed by a different artist, creating their own individual interpretation of an element of the young girl’s journey. A few years later, a digital version of the exhibition was suggested which Patel started crafting, called The Crossing (2017). This multi-platform project was designed to play out to multiple stakeholders including those directly vulnerable to trafficking techniques and audience responses, detailed below, capture how exhibition visitors became emotionally and psychologically involved in the human trafficking story The Crossing (2017). This chapter focuses on the production and post-production processes, the cross-disciplinary teamwork and the relationship between the director’s vision – ideation, story, creative concepts – and its effective realisation through sound design, cinematography, visual effects and editing. This collaborative creative practice account of the making of The Crossing reveals how this multi-award winning, immersive and impactful project on trafficking was realised

Morphological and optical data of AgNW embedded transparent conductive layer

    No full text
AbstractIn this data article, morphological and optical data of AgNW encapsulated between ITO layers are presented to get insights into our article (DOI:10.1016/j.solmat.2016.04.038; Hong-Sik Kim, Pankaj Yadav, Malkeshkumar Patel, Hyunki Kim, Kavita Pandey, Joondong Kim, 2016) [1]. SEM images for the formation of AgNWs networks by number of spin coating are also presented. SEM photographs showing the surface morphologies before and after rapid thermal treatment of prepared samples have been presented. Apart from morphological data set, optical characteristics of this type of samples are given. The comparison plots of optical reflectance from AgNW encapsulated between ITO layers and bare ITO are given between the wavelength ranges from 300 to 1100nm. At the end, transmittance and reflectance curves of native glass substrates used in this study are presented

Narrating the past: virtual environments and narrative

    No full text
This paper explores how traditional narrative language used in film and theatre can be adapted to create interactivity and a greater sense of presence in the virtual heritage environment. It focuses on the fundamental principles of narrative required to create immersion and presence and investigates methods of embedding intangible social histories into these environments. These issues are explored in a case study of Greens Mill in the 1830’s, interweaving the story of the reform bill riots in Nottingham with the life of George Green, mathematician and proprietor of the Mill
