GPU-based Lagrangian heuristic for multidimensional assignment problems with decomposable costs
Multidimensional assignment problem (MAP) is one of the many formulations of data association problem which categorizes data based on various data sources. A higher number of data sources ensures an accurate categorization of data. But it also leads to a significant increase in the amount of data, consequently increasing the computation time where quick results are sought. In this work, we used Lagrangian relaxation technique to solve the MAPs with decomposable costs. But the major contribution was an efficient parallelization of this algorithm on a graphics processing unit (GPU) based programming architecture. Bigger problems with larger data sets were solved by using multiple processors with each having a GPU of its own. This not only handled the data by distributing it among the processors, but also increased the amount of parallelization to give us good iteration times. Problems with 796 million cost variables were solved on varying number of processors between 1 and 64, with significantly fast iteration times. Owing to the good scalability of the developed parallel solver, we successfully solved problems with 31 billion cost variables on processors ranging from 64 to 128 in good amount of time.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2020-05-01The student, Shardul Natu, accepted the attached license on 2018-02-23 at 08:13.The student, Shardul Natu, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2018-02-23 at 08:46.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2018-02-23 at 11:45.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #12046 on 2018-08-31 at 17:17:11Made available in DSpace on 2018-09-04T20:33:49Z (GMT).
Vsebinsko pomemben vzrok za pomanjkanje take razprave vidim v nezadostni politični kulturi dialoga. Večina objavljenih besedil in komentarjev v javnih občilih so bila do sedaj enostranska. V številnih nastopih nasprotnikov vstopa Slovenije v Nato sem zasledil veliko zelo spornih, oz. neresničnih trditev. In contrast to the previous period, the question of the membership of Sloveniain possible NATO, gained a new dimension in 2001-2002, since the membership became acceptable in principle, also for NATO. This requires a substantive and correct public debate. The author sees an important reason for a lack of such debate in insufficient political culture of dialog. A majority of the published articles and comments in mass media were until now one-sided. The author noticed a lot of very controversial and false statementson the part of the opponents to the NATO membership. The ruling coalition was unconcerned for a long time, while an organised campaign againstthe NATO membership has been carried out in some Slovenian mass media. Aggravating circumstances are still the wide-spread ignorance, incorrect notions and biases against NATO. The main reason for the decline in public opinion support is seen in a widespread false of feeling false security and the weakening of collective memory. The debate on NATO membership, due to several factors, has produced political polarisation, that largely cuts accross the usual social, cultural, religious, and ideological divisions in Slovenian society
Magnetic investigation of igneous intrusions in Teesdale, Northern England
A total field magnetic survey was conducted in Harwood valley in Northern Teesdale, and the neighbouring area, to investigate the igneous intrusions which could be the cause of a magnetic anomaly and metasomatism in the mineralization of the area. Niccolite and other nickel-bearing minerals had been found in magnetite-rich ore at three localities in Harwood valley by a team of the British Geological Survey. This mineral assemblage has only been sighted in a few other zones and the cause of mineralization was assumed to be metamorphism due to the emplacement of the Whin Sill and associated dykes during the late Carboniferous-early Permian age. Magnetic profiles recently acquired in the area confirm the existence of a dyke intruding the Teesdale fault along the Harwood valley. The average amplitude of the anomaly is 350nT, reversed with respect to the present field. Further investigations to the south-east and north-west of the valley relate the intrusion with the known outcrops of the Cleveland dyke (Tertiary). An outcrop of an igneous intrusion that bears similar properties with samples of the Cleveland dyke rock was recently sighted by the author at lower Langdon Beck near the confluence of the Tees and Harwood rivers. Thin sections of this rock displayed an identical match in grain size and pigment composition with the Cleveland dyke samples from other known outcrops, confirming the dyke's presence along the Teesdale Fault.2.5D modelling of the magnetic profiles was carried out and the results reflect the depth to the top of the dyke at Harwood to be about 30m. Thickness of the body varies from 5 to 25m but is 12m at Harwood and about 14m in Etters Gill. Further south of the valley at Langdon Beck is another geological formation; the Burtreeford Disturbance. This is a series of faulting and folding that was a result of compressional stress (Permian age) from a WSW direction. It also produced the E- facing monoclinal folds of the Dent Fault zone and the easterly directed Pennine thrusts of the Cross Fell Inlier before, during and after the emplacement of the Whin. The study here reflects the Disturbance as a magnetic high and its confluence with the Teesdale fault, the inferred Cleveland dyke and the Whin Sill offers a complex interpretation challenge. A GIS data base for the project area was created using Arc-GIS, GRAVMAG, SURFER,DIDGER and other Microsoft Office applications. General interpretation of the anomalies is conducted but conclusions raise several questions. The cause of the mineralization in Harwood Valley is still uncertain, though it could be due to the cooling Cleveland dyke (58Ma) or the dyke could be forming a passage for the fluids of unknown age from the lower crust or mantle that cool and crystallize at shallower depths
Overactuation for Active Damping in Compliant Positioning Stage using Piezoelectric Transducers
Integrating compliant mechanisms into high-precision motion systems has facilitated the development of lightweight and frictionless designs. However, these systems often face challenges related to low-frequency parasitic resonance modes and limited structural damping, leading to compromised position accuracy and restricted control bandwidth. While notch filters are conventionally used to suppress these parasitic resonance peaks and enable higher control bandwidths, undesired effects persist in closed-loop disturbance rejection performance. To address this limitation, researchers have explored the concept of overactuation, employing a greater number of actuators than the number of rigid body modes to be controlled. This approach allows for additional closed-loop feedback interconnections, offeringincreased freedom to enhance performance. This research presents a novel overactuation based solution where: (1) the use of additional actuators enables the implementation of active damping control to improve closed-loop disturbance rejection performance and (2) the integration of multiple distributed piezoelectric bender actuator-sensor pairs in a collocated configuration enhances damping performance. A mathematical framework is formulated to demonstrate the benefits, and an experimental setup is constructed to validate the numerical findings and serve as a proof of concept. The proposed solution effectively suppresses theparasitic resonance mode, enhances disturbance rejection on the end-effector, and enables higher control bandwidth in the positioning system.Mechanical Engineering | Mechatronic System Design (MSD

Vladimir Lapin’s Armiia Rossii v Kavkazskoi voine XVIII-XIX vv. (The Russian Army in the Caucasian War XVIII – XIX centuries) deals with the subject of the Russian involvement and conquest of the Caucasus in the course of 18th and 19th centuries. Unlike many traditional works on the subject the author does not present a chronological history of this conflict. Instead Lapin analyses the transformations the Russian Army underwent as a result of its prolonged interaction with the people and natu..
Color Image Compression Using Vector Quantization and Hybrid Wavelet Transform
AbstractThis paper presents simpler image compression technique using vector quantization and hybrid wavelet transform. Hybrid wavelet transform is generated using Kronecker product of two different transforms. Image is converted to transform domain using hybrid wavelet transform and very few low frequency coefficients are retained to achieve good compression. Vector quantization is applied on these coefficients to increase compression ratio significantly. VQ algorithms are applied on transformed image and codebooks of minimum possible size 16 and 32 are generated. KFCG and KMCG are faster in execution and beats performance of LBG algorithm. KFCG combined with hybrid wavelet transform gives lowest distortion and acceptable image quality at compression ratio 192

Nacionalni interes Republike Slovenije in varnostne sestavine evroatlantskih integracij
Having analyzed the present geopolitical position and security policy of Slovenia, the author reviewed the existing options for protecting Slovenia\u27s national security at the individual and group levels. He argues that Sloveniannational security cannot be adequately protected otherwise than in a viable system of collective defense. He found that OUN, OSCE and EU lack relevant capabilities. The author concludes that the only viable system of collective defense in Euroatlantic space is to be found in NATO and argues in favor of this solution for Slovenia
The Russian Federation and Nato
Since the end of the Cold War the relations between the Russian Federation and NATO have undergone significant changes. As the all-out confrontation ended they became more cooperative. The author discusses five possible scenarios of future Russian-NATO relations from continued rivalry to the Russian Federationʼs membership in NATO. The author concludes that neither of them might be fully implemented. Much will depend on extraneous factors and internal politics.
