Sustainable housing materials in Shiraz
Sustainable, or "green building," design and construction provide an opportunity to use resources more efficiently, while creating healthier and more energy-efficient homes. Successful green buildings leave a lighter footprint on the environment through conservation of resources, while at the same time balancing energy-efficient, cost-effective, low-maintenance products for construction needs. A similar concept of green building is natural building, which is usually on a smaller scale and tends to focus on the use of natural materials that are available locally In this thesis, sustainable housing materials for Shiraz houses are identified. In the first step the concept of sustainable materials are revealed and then, the characteristics of sustainable hosing materials are explained based on previous works and researches. Forward these works, same thesis for sustainable building materials in Sri Lanka is modified and its methodology is analyzed. Total characteristics and modifications of Shiraz and Shiraz houses are explained in next step, and then the analysis based on the sustainable material characteristics is started. Each objective is analyzed based on each house condition and the results are determined. The results show that, gathering the following materials would lead us to have a sustainable house in Shiraz: insulated cement block due to its low embodied energy and carbon emission for using in inside walls, the low amount of carbon emission and embodied energy of travertine stone in faced walls, steep clay roof as roofing system because it has the least carbon emission, and UPVC window for windows materials. In case of widows materials iron windows has the least amount of embodied amount of carbon emission and embodied energy but because they do not have many characteristics of sustainability, UPVC windows are preferred instead of these windows
The Role of Different Journal Access Models in Meeting the Information Needs of Shiraz University Researchers
The aim of the present study is to investigate and compare the role of journals with different access models (including print, database, print/database subscriptions) as well as unsubscribed models in meeting the information needs of Shiraz University researchers. Using a bibliometric method, the communication studies the references used in Shiraz University scientific papers indexed by Thomson Reuter’s citation indexes (i.e. SCI, SSCI and Arts & Humanities CI) in 2010. A vast number of scientific journals are found to be available in Shiraz University, most of them repeatedly provided via different models. Over 90% of the journals receive no citations from Shiraz University researchers. The researchers generally tend to refer to unsubscribed journals as well as subscribed database journals. However, the journals mostly referred to by Shiraz University are found to be covered by database and print/database models. The uncitedness of a wide range of print journals confirms the rationality of the policy of discontinuation of print journals subscription in favor of e-collection development. It seems that the database model performs well not only in meeting the variety of information needs of the researchers, but also in providing the required core resources for the users. The unsubscribed model is revealed useful merely to fulfill the variety of the users' information needs; whereas it plays a minor role in providing the core needs of the researchers. The print model, following the database and the print/database models, is more or less effective in providing the core resources needed by the researchers of Shiraz University. Since a number of the core journals of Shiraz University are available in print model, it is suggested to renovate the subscription to the core print journals, preferably in online format
Medical Errors and Barriers to Reporting in Ten Hospitals in southern Iran
Background [International research has shown that medical errors are a major threat to patient safety.] Aims [The present study aimed to determine the frequency and barriers to reporting medical errors in Shiraz public hospitals, Iran. ] Method [This retrospective analytical study was conducted in Shiraz public hospitals in 2013. Using the standardized checklist of Shiraz University of Medical sciences and Uribe questionnaire, the data were gathered from 10 public hospitals. Then, the data were entered into the SPSS statistical software (v. 16) and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Spearman, chi-square, one-way ANOVA, and T test. ] Results [During 365 days, 4379 medical errors were recorded in 10 hospitals. The highest frequency was related to systematic errors. Besides, most of the errors had occurred in larger hospitals, internal wards, and morning shifts. The results revealed a significant relationship between medical errors and wards and hospitals. Moreover, individual and organizational factors were the barriers to reporting medical errors in the study hospitals. Heritage management and urban development in Iran, case study of Shiraz
Purpose: Large-scale interventions are still the dominant approach in dealing with historic cities in Iran; however, during the last decade there has been a shift towards integrated and decentralised policies and a series of locally based projects were initiated across the country. Political and ideological forces, population growth as well as cultural and heritage consensus are influencing approaches towards urban conservation and heritage management constantly. This paper opens up the urban intervention approaches in the historic core of Shiraz and provides a deeper insight and better understanding of heritage management and regeneration plans in Shiraz as a representative of historic Iranian cities. Design/methodology/approach: The study explains and analyses major urban transformations in Shiraz. The main approaches towards historical city core are identified and the mechanism that shaped these approaches in national and local scale is discussed. This investigation primarily uses qualitative data sources. The study relies on multiple sources of evidence which result in the reliability and validity of the investigation. Therefore, primary sources include original documents, maps and photographs published in documentation for the projects, published and unpublished materials and archives about case study city and secondary sources such as interviews with consultants and authorities as well as residents have been used. Findings: This paper provides a more detailed explanation about several interrelated factors that affected the process of decision and policy making, planning and implementation of city centre interventions during the last two decades. Originality/value: This paper anticipates consequent trends in heritage management in Shiraz and recommends further research areas. Readiness of Shiraz teaching hospitals to implement Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
Introduction: Due to the importance of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) in the quality of health care services, checking the readiness
of hospitals to implement it is a vital step to define success or failure of the Electronic Medical Record in the first place. The aim of this
study was to evaluate the readiness of Shiraz teaching hospitals to implement Electronic Medical Record.
Method: This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study done in 2015. The study population included Health Information Management
(HIM) staff of Shiraz teaching hospitals. Five hospitals from a total of 14 hospitals were selected as Single-stage cluster sampling
with a population of 79 health information management staff. Data collection was performed by using a validated questionnaire. The
questionnaire consisted of three main dimensions including technical, organizational and legal requirements. For data analysis, SPSS
software version 16 and one way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) for comparisons between five hospitals were used.
Results:The results showed that Shiraz teaching hospitals have high readiness (3.66 out of 5) to implement Electronic Medical Record.
Shiraz teaching hospitals are better prepared in terms of legal requirements. Also, a significant difference was not observed among the
hospitals in any of the technical, organizational and legal aspects (P > 0.05).
Conclusion: Due to the importance of the technical, organizational and legal aspects in the implementation of Electronic Medical
Record, it is recommended that the authorities consider these aspects in implementation of Electronic Medical Record. Also, according
to the high readiness of Shiraz teaching hospitals to implement Electronic Medical Record, it is recommended that authorities should
take necessary measures, including financial support in order to run it
Investigating Causes of Cholera Outbreak in Shiraz during 1236 and 1322 Hijri (1820-1904 A.D.)
Cholera, also called morbidity and death illness under some other titles, spread nine times in Shiraz in an epidemic manner. The pathogen is Vibrio Cholera, and its source is contaminated water and food. Before 1236, the number of sufferers was very small in Shiraz. However, with the establishment of Qajar dynasty, the first outbreak took place in 1236 and left a large number of casualties through the years 1241, 1248, 1263, 1274, 1285, 1306, 1311 and 1322 Hijri. The outbreak was caused by both external and internal causes. With regard to external factors, pilgrimage and maritime traders contributed to this disease. This disease hit both Iraq and Saudi Arabia via India by Muslim Indian pilgrims and was transferred to the city after infecting Shirazi pilgrims. Moreover, traveling to India with the intention of trade and Indian trips to the Persian Gulf littoral states provided the transferring possibility of Vibrio Cholera to Bushehr and then to Shiraz. Internal parameters played a greater role in this outbreak. Lack of health care and clean water, ignorance of people and some false traditions as well as natural disasters such as earthquakes, locust invasion and the surge of famine were the main reasons which accelerated the outbreak of Cholera in Shiraz, reduced the ability of people to manage this catastrophe and consequently increased the mortality rate severely
Investigating Role of British in Health, Treatment and Establishment of Mursalin (Muslemin) Educational-Therapeutic Hospital in Shiraz (1900-1979)
Mursalin (Muslemin) hospital was founded by British physicians in Shiraz. The hospital and its British staff have played an important role in the evolution of medical knowledge and the provision of health services in this city. Before the arrival of Donald Kaar and Emelian Stewart in Shiraz, there was no modern hospital or clinic; health services and pharmaceuticals were traditionally provided by local medicine men. The arrival of British physicians and nurses has not only finished traditional therapies in long term, but also commenced the arrival of modern medical knowledge in Shiraz. This study seeks the answer to this fundamental question that what the causes and factors of the arrival of British physicians and nurses in Shiraz were and what role they have played in providing modern health services in this city. This research is conducted in a descriptive manner along with analysis based on library and documentation resources (National Documentation Center of Iran and Documentation Archive of Birmingham University) as well as field research. The findings of this research demonstrate the beneficial role that British physicians and nurses played in improving people’s health; however, their main goal has been the promotion of Christianity in and around Shiraz
Spatial Assessment of Accessibility to Public Healthcare Services: A Case Study on Accessibility to Hospitals in Shiraz
Introduction: Unfair distribution of healthcare services is one of the most important issues
all over the world. The present study aimed to determine the distribution pattern of available
hospital beds and the accessibility pattern to hospitals in Shiraz.
Methods: This was an analytical study. At first, spatial distribution pattern of available
hospital beds was determined using Moran’s Index (Moran’s I). Then, the accessibility pattern
to hospitals was determined using Euclidean distance and network travel distance metrics. All
of the analyses were conducted using Arc GIS (10.3) software.
Results: The results revealed that available hospital beds had a random and unbalanced
distribution pattern in Shiraz based on Moran’s I (Moran’s I=-0.05). Besides, according the
achieved standard service areas for the existing hospitals, calculated by using Network analysis
tools, 65.47% of Shiraz population was underserved in terms of accessibility. Furthermore,
assessment of accessibility patterns resulted from both types of applied distances, indicating
that in most cases hospitals were located in the central parts of the city.
Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, distribution of hospitals in Shiraz
was unfair. Therefore, policymakers are suggested to plan in order to increase the number of
Shiraz hospitals. They are also recommended that they should give priority to establishing
new hospitals in areas without standard accessibility over areas with standard accessibility
based on the results of the present study
