This paper is intended as an investigation of features of Yong-shi shi in the Late-Tang period. Though numerous attempts have been made to describe the character of each famous poets, such as Tu Mu 杜牧, Li Shang-yin 李商隱, Wen Ting-yun 溫庭筠, little attention has been given to the general tendency in this period. Therefore, by considering features of Yong-shi shi, I attempted to make it clear. Yong-shi shi is the most traditional genre in Chinese literature. Before Tang period, many Yong-shi shi were written by various poets, we can find some common features. The most important factor of these is the expression of reverence that is shown for historical persons. Into the Tang dynasty, Yong-shi shi become more intellectual. Bai Ju-yi 白居易's and Liu Zong-yuan 柳宗元's Yong-shi shi are characterized by expressing their own opinion or interpretation on historical persons. This growing tendency to intelligence has been continued in the Late-Tang period. In this period, compared with former works, those were lacking in certain ways, in the expression of reverence and personal feelings. Irony, paradox and wit were indispensable vehicles of expression. Namely, instead of feelings, intellectual factors become more important. This tendency was continued into the Song dynasty

    A Study of Du Mu's Yong-wu shi

In the earlier paper, I investigated the style of yong-wu shi (詠物詩) in the Late-Tang period and pointed out two outstanding characteristics. One is that from Qi (齊) period in the Southern Dynasties to the Late-Tang period Yong-wu shi became lyrical, the other is that a new style like Zhe-gu 鷓鴣 by Zheng gu (鄭谷), which is marked by the lack in the expression of personal feelings, came into existence in the Late-Tang period. So far, I have seen general tendency of yong-wu shi in this period. The purpose of this paper is to investigate yong-wu shi in details through each of poets and their works. Du mu (杜牧)'s yong-wu shi has hitherto been ignored but it seems to be very essential. His poems like Liu-jue-ju 柳絶句 or Gui-yan 歸燕 were characterized by the expression of his personal feelings. They were written under the influence of Du fu (杜甫) in the High-Tang period but this observation applies to the other poets in the same period, it seems not to be important. Among these works, however, like Shan-shi-liu 山石榴, Zi-wei-hua 紫微花 and Yue 月 are quite unique. These are lacking in personal feelings and marked by wit and humor. though his works like Jiao-jing 鵁鶄, Ya 鵶 and Zao-mei 早梅 are certainly under the influence of Du fu, comparisons with other poets in the same period make it clear that they are quite unique in view of wit and humor. One may say that Du mu set the new style in the history of this genre. It should also be added that this kind of expression on the yong-wu shi is reflected in his other works in many ways. For example, his peculiar yong-shi shi (詠史詩) is most typical one

This paper is intended as a study of Yong-wu shi in the Late-Tang period. Yong-wu shi is a traditional genre in Chinese literature. It is said that the style of Yong-wu shi was established as a genre in the Qi (齊) period of the Southern Dynasties. In those days Yong-wu shi was an important means of society, so that works were social and playful. In the High-Tang period, Yong-wu shi became lyrical. For example, Du fu (杜甫)'s poem Gu-yan 孤雁 is characterized by expression of his personal feeling, being neither social nor playful. Bai ju-yi (白居易)'s poem Ting-huai 庭槐 and Han yu (韓愈)'s poem Ting-qiu 庭楸, in the Middle-Tang, were written under the influence of Du fu. In general, Yong-wu shi came to be a vehicle for expressing their own mind in this period. This tendency toward lyricism has been continued in the Late-Tang period. Li shang-yin (李商隱)'s poem such as Li-hua 李花, Zhu-jin-hua 朱槿花 are typical example of this tendency. While this style under the influence of Du fu was written continuously, a new style came into existence. Zhe-gu 鷓鴣 by Zheng gu (鄭谷) and Yong shuang-bai-lu 詠雙白鷺 by Yong tao (雍陶) are examples of this new style. These are marked by the lack in the expression of personal feelings. Different from Du fu's works, they are formal and impersonal. In a sense, this new style resembles Southern dynasties' poems in character. Though in this period numerous poets like Luo ye (羅鄴), Tang yan-qian (唐彥謙) wrote Yong-wu shi using this style, because of a modern view which places emphasis on personality, little attention has been given to these minor poets, but the importance of these works cannot be overemphasized
