Yong-shi shi in the Late-Tang period

This paper is intended as an investigation of features of Yong-shi shi in the Late-Tang period. Though numerous attempts have been made to describe the character of each famous poets, such as Tu Mu 杜牧, Li Shang-yin 李商隱, Wen Ting-yun 溫庭筠, little attention has been given to the general tendency in this period. Therefore, by considering features of Yong-shi shi, I attempted to make it clear. Yong-shi shi is the most traditional genre in Chinese literature. Before Tang period, many Yong-shi shi were written by various poets, we can find some common features. The most important factor of these is the expression of reverence that is shown for historical persons. Into the Tang dynasty, Yong-shi shi become more intellectual. Bai Ju-yi 白居易's and Liu Zong-yuan 柳宗元's Yong-shi shi are characterized by expressing their own opinion or interpretation on historical persons. This growing tendency to intelligence has been continued in the Late-Tang period. In this period, compared with former works, those were lacking in certain ways, in the expression of reverence and personal feelings. Irony, paradox and wit were indispensable vehicles of expression. Namely, instead of feelings, intellectual factors become more important. This tendency was continued into the Song dynasty

(Na + +K + )-adenosinetriphosphatase in the brain of Shiverer (Shi/Shi) mice

The myelin-deficient Shiverer (Shi/Shi) mutant mouse may be a useful model in assessing the dependence of brain (Na + +K + )-ATPase concentration and composition on myelin membrane formation. Brain microsomal membranes from age-matched control (+/+) and Shiverer (Shi/Shi) mice were fractionated by differential centrifugation and sucrose gradient sedimentation. No reduction in (Na + +K + )-ATPase specific activity was measured in whole homogenates, high-and low-speed fractions or gradient fractions from brains of Shi/Shi mice as compared to those of +/+ mice. In addition, sodium dodecylsulfatepolyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and immunoblotting with antisera specific for mouse brain (Na + +K + )-ATPase revealed no significant difference in catalytic subunit composition between fractions of +/+ and Shi/Shi brains. The similar results obtained for both +/+ and myelin-deficient Shi/Shi mice suggest that myelin contributes little to total brain (Na + +K + )-ATPase.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45404/1/11064_2004_Article_BF00971708.pd

The Continuity of Violence in the Stages of the Shi-Shi Movement of Nineteenth-Century Japan

Some scholars place violence as prominent in an early stage of a social movement, whereas others argue that violence is characteristic of a later stage. This paper addresses the question of whether there is a specific movement stage that is particular characterized by violence through an analysis of the shi-shi movement (1858-1864). The shi-shi movement helped create the revolutionary situation which culminated in Japan's Meiji Restoration (1868). Violence was prominent and consequential in the shi-shi movement and was found throughout the career of the movement. This study of a single case is by no means suffcient to claim primary over existing models of the place of violence in social movements. The shi-shi movement, however, significantly varies from theoretical models that link violent actions to a specific movement stage

Myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) in the CNS of adult shiverer (Shi/Shi) mice

Brain fractions of adult control (+ / +) and shiverer (Shi/Shi) mice were investigated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and immunoblotting. Immunostaining with specific antisera against rat brain myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) was detected at about the 96-kD region of gels in electrophoresed samples of the total homogenate, low-speed supernatant fraction, and low- and high-speed sedimentable portions of brain from +/+ mice. Reduced immunostaining was observed in the corresponding samples of brain fractions from Shi/Shi mice. The cerebrum, cerebellum, and medulla of +/+ and Shi/Shi mice were examined immunocytochemically for MAG on paraffin-embedded sections. Periaxonal immunostaining for MAG was observed in all the regions and the highest concentrations were in the corpus callosum, in the central cores of cerebellar folia, and in the medulla. Patterns of distribution were similar in +/+ and Shi/Shi mice, although the density of immunostaining around individual axons and the number of immunostained axons were significantly reduced in Shi/Shi mice. In addition, the three brain regions of Shi/Shi mice exhibited oligodendrocyte-like cells that contained immunostaining for MAG in the cytoplasm and periphery of their perikarya. This type of immunostained cell was not observed in +/+ mice. In this study, immunoblotting with brain fractions and immunocytochemistry revealed strong evidence for reduced concentrations of MAG in the CNS of Shi/Shi mice compared to control mice. In addition, there is immunocytochemical evidence for abnormal accumulation of MAG in perikarya of oligodendroglial-like cells, suggesting the possibility of a transport block for myelin proteins in the shiverer mutant.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/50217/1/490160405_ftp.pd
