Traces and shards of self-injury: Strange accounting with “Author X”
In this strange account autoethnography, three or four authors explore their lived experiences with self-injury. Strange accounting is both a post-modern style of text, and a method for keeping identities concealed when risks and secrets are in play. Author X, a post-modern place-keeper for an anonymous author who may or may not have contributed to this manuscript, introduces a new dimension and layer of concealment. With Author X in-play and under erasure, the reader will never be sure if there were three or four authors on this manuscript. Through strange accounting, a post-structuralist/postmodernist frame will be applied to understanding the self-injury experience. We frame self-injury as a social practice and, for some, an everyday norm, while remaining acutely aware of the stigma surrounding the topic of self-injury. Each of us, coupled with Author X, provide the others cover to trace stories of self-injury through the literature, our flesh, and our lives

Modelling ground vibration from tunnels using wavenumber finite and boundary element methods
A mathematical model is presented for ground vibration induced by trains, which uses wavenumber finite- and boundary-element methods. The track, tunnel and ground are assumed homogeneous and infinitely long in the track direction (x-direction). The models are formulated in terms of the wavenumber in the x-direction and discretization in the yz-plane. The effect of load motion in the x-direction is included. Compared with a conventional, three-dimensional finite- or boundary-element model, this is computationally faster and requires far less memory, even though calculations must be performed for a series of discrete wavenumbers. Thus it becomes practicable to carry out investigative study of train-induced ground vibration. The boundary-element implementation uses a variable transformation to solve the well-known problem of strongly singular integrals in the formulation. A ‘boundary truncation element’ greatly improves accuracy where the infinite surface of the ground is truncated in the boundary-element discretization. Predictions of vibration response on the ground surface due to a unit force applied at the track are performed for two railway tunnels. The results show a substantial difference in the environmental vibration that could be expected from the alternative designs. The effect of a moving load is demonstrated in a surface vibration example in which vibration propagates from an embankment into layered ground.<br/

A new RBF neural network with boundary value constraints
We present a novel topology of the radial basis function (RBF) neural network, referred to as the boundary value constraints (BVC)-RBF, which is able to automatically satisfy a set of BVC. Unlike most existing neural networks whereby the model is identified via learning from observational data only, the proposed BVC-RBF offers a generic framework by taking into account both the deterministic prior knowledge and the stochastic data in an intelligent manner. Like a conventional RBF, the proposed BVC-RBF has a linear-in-the-parameter structure, such that it is advantageous that many of the existing algorithms for linear-in-the-parameters models are directly applicable. The BVC satisfaction properties of the proposed BVC-RBF are discussed. Finally, numerical examples based on the combined D-optimality-based orthogonal least squares algorithm are utilized to illustrate the performance of the proposed BVC-RBF for completeness

An orthogonal forward regression technique for sparse kernel density estimation
Using the classical Parzen window (PW) estimate as the desired response, the kernel density estimation is formulated as a regression problem and the orthogonal forward regression technique is adopted to construct sparse kernel density (SKD) estimates. The proposed algorithm incrementally minimises a leave-one-out test score to select a sparse kernel model, and a local regularisation method is incorporated into the density construction process to further enforce sparsity. The kernel weights of the selected sparse model are finally updated using the multiplicative nonnegative quadratic programming algorithm, which ensures the nonnegative and unity constraints for the kernel weights and has the desired ability to reduce the model size further. Except for the kernel width, the proposed method has no other parameters that need tuning, and the user is not required to specify any additional criterion to terminate the density construction procedure. Several examples demonstrate the ability of this simple regression-based approach to effectively construct a SKID estimate with comparable accuracy to that of the full-sample optimised PW density estimate.
