Supporting undergraduate dental students to become effective self-assessors in clinical settings
No full textThe hidden nature of dentistry and changing dental practice environment requires our graduates to be effective self-assessors, thereby ensuring they can address their learning needs. This showcase will present our approach to supporting development of first-year dental students self-assessment attributes. Our approach involves workshops and practising self-assessment with the aim of improving their clinic performance. Current theory and research indicate that if students do not develop an understanding of the assessment processes, including the use of explicit criteria and standards, and experience these tools in activities involving discussion of exemplars and practice, then their learning outcomes will be limited. Participants will be asked to work through, discuss and critique sections of some activities we have developed, using recommendations from the literature. The outcomes from these activities will inform how our self-assessment/feedback activities can be designed to support development of dental graduates as effective life-long learners.http://www.herdsa.org.au/?page_id=217#

Training Performance Raters Through Error-based Experiential Learning
No full textAbstractHuman resource managers need to understand issues relating to rater error. There are well-established ways to introduce these concepts to those training in the field. However, they require a substantial period of training to be successful. Their use in a tertiary setting can be severely constrained by time limitations. An alternative approach to these traditional training styles is that of error-based experiential learning. This training strategy immerses students in erroneous experiences that are then explored and used as a learning platform to build models of good practice. The training process used to structure the exercise is described in detail, illustrating the various errors committed by the trainees. Student feedback from the exercise and some likely risks attached to the activity are also discussed.</jats:p
Developing Excellent Academic Leaders in Turbulent Times
No full textThe higher education sector needs good academic leaders. Unfortunately, the development and support of good leadership has been largely missing, despite its criticality in preparing institutions for these turbulent times. This commentary explores some of the challenges facing the sector with respect to academic leadership. It profiles some of the issues that are emerging with respect to building a robust sector, including addressing higher education's poor performance with respect to viable and well-considered strategy, academic management and the support of vulnerable academic members. It argues that these issues may stem from poor academic leadership and maps some of the reasons for this challenge. Suggestions as to how we might improve the higher education environment through enhanced valuing and support of good leadership are offered
