    Desiring the east: a comparative study of Middle English romance and modern popular sheikh romance

    This thesis comparatively examines a selection of twenty-first century sheikh romances and Middle English romances from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries that imagine an erotic relationship occurring between east and west. They do so against a background of conflict, articulated in military confrontation and binary religious and ethnic division. The thesis explores the strategies used to facilitate the cross-cultural relationship across such a gulf of difference and considers what a comparison of medieval and modern romance can reveal about attitudes towards otherness in popular romance. In Chapter 1, I analyse the construction of the east in each genre, investigating how the homogenisation of the romance east in sheikh romance distances it from the geopolitical reality of those parts of the Middle East seen, by the west, to be "other". Chapter 2 examines the articulation of gender identity and the ways in which these romances subvert and reassert binary gender difference to uphold normative heterosexual relations. Chapter 3 considers how ethnic and religious difference is nuanced, in particular through the use of fabric, breaking down the disjunction between east and west. Chapter 4 investigates the way ethnicity, religion and gender affect hierarchies of power in the abduction motif, enabling undesirable aspects of the east to be recast. The key finding of this thesis is that both romance genres facilitate the cross-cultural erotic relationship by rewriting apparently binary differences of religion and ethnicity to create sameness. While the east is figured differently in Middle English and modern sheikh romance, the strategies they use to facilitate the cross-cultural erotic relationship are similar. The thesis concludes that the constancy of certain attitudes towards the east in both medieval and modern romance reveals a persistence of conservative values in representations of the east in romance

    Bu çalışma Moğol istilası önünden kaçarak Anadolu’ya gelen Şeyh Hasan ve Şeyh Ahmed Tavil’i ele almaktadır. Bahsedilen kişilerin adlarına birer Alevi ocağının kurulmuş olması, onların yaşadıkları çağda oldukça tanınan ve etraflarında önemli bir nüfus barındıran birer derviş olduklarını göstermektedir. Fakat şimdiye kadar üzerinde pek durulmamış olan bu dervişler hakkında tarihi bilgiler yok denecek kadar az olup, haklarında çok zayıf rivayetler bulunmaktadır. Bu dervişler eldeki belgelere göre Ahmed Yesevî geleneğinden ziyade Vefâî geleneğine bağlanmakta olup, bu yönüyle diğer bazı Alevi ocak kurucularıyla paralellik göstermektedirler. Şeyh Hasan ve Şeyh Ahmed Tavil’in tarikat bağlantılarını ve bulundukları çevreye etkisini ortaya koymayı amaçlayan bu çalışma, Şeyh Hasan, Şeyh Ahmed Tavil ve Ebü’l-Vefâ el-Bağdâdî hakkındaki verilerle sınırlandırılmıştır. Nitel araştırma olarak planlanan bu çalışmada doküman incelemesi yöntemi uygulanmıştır. Şeyh Hasan, Şeyh Ahmed Tavil ve Ebü’l-Vefâ el-Bağdâdî başlığı ile taranan veriler doküman analizi yoluyla incelenmiştir. Çalışmada Şeyh Hasan ve Şeyh Ahmed Tavil’in Ebül-Vefâ ile bağlantısı ortaya konulmaya çalışılmış, eldeki belgelerden hareketle yukarıda belirtilen hususlar tartışılmış, ayrıca hem Şeyh Hasan ve Şeyh Ahmed Tavil’in kimliği hem de Vefâî geleneğinin Alevi ocakları üzerindeki etkisi ortaya konulmuştur. Çalışmada ayrıca Şeyh Hasan’ın Tunceli bölgesinde yaşayan Şeyh Hasan aşireti ile ilgili bağlantısına da değinilmiştir. Araştırmada Şeyh Hasan ve Şeyh Ahmed Tavil’in her ne kadar sözlü gelenekte Hoca Ahmed Yesevî’nin yanında yetişmiş, onun tarafından Anadolu’ya gönderilmiş birer derviş oldukları anlatılsa da 1530 tarihinde düzenlenen belgeler sayesinde onların açık bir şekilde Ebü’l-Vefâ’ya bağlı oldukları ve bölgenin İslamlaştırılmasında önemli katkılar sağladıkları sonucuna varılmıştır. This paper focuses on Sheikh Hassan and Sheik Ahmad Tawil, who both arrived in Anatolia to flee the Mongol invasion. The fact that Ocaks were founded in their name shows that they were two wellknown and highly influential dervishes of the time and milieu, in which they lived. However, these dervishes have so far received little scholarly attention and the historical knowledge about them is scarce and limited to unreliable accounts. These accounts maintain that both were close to and trained by Ahmad Yassawi and they were sent to Anatolia for the Islamization of this land. These accounts even led to a view that Sheikh Ahmad Tawil was in fact, Ahmad Yasawi himself so “Ahmad Tawil Ocak” was also called “Ahmad Yassawi Ocak”. Planned as qualitative research, the method employed in the paper is document analysis. The data collected on Sheikh Hassan, Sheikh Ahmad Tawil and Abu al-Wafa alBaghdadi was evaluated based on the method of document analysis. Hence, this paper attempts to show the connection of Sheikh Hassan and Sheikh Ahmad Tawil with Abu al-Wafa al-Baghdadi and discuss the other issues mentioned above. Furthermore, the identities of Sheikh Hassan and Sheikh Ahmad Tawil as well as the influence of Wafai tradition on Alawi Ocaks are revealed. Finally, the connection of Sheikh Hassan with the Sheikh Hassan tribe of Tunceli region is brought to attention. The paper concludes that while the oral tradition maintains Sheikh Hassan and Sheik Ahmad Tawil are two dervishes trained and sent to Anatolia by Ahmad Yassawi, based on documents from year 1530 they were, in fact, connected to Abu al-Wafa and played an important role in the Islamization of the region

    Thailand is a Muslim minority area in Southeast Asia with Pattani as one of its regions, one of the influential scholars in the field of Hadith is Sheikh Wan Hasan bin Wan Ishak al-Pattani. This study aims to determine the contribution of Sheikh Wan Hasan bin Wan Ishak al-Pattani in the Hadith study.  The research method used by researchers is qualitative which is descriptive in nature. The result of this research is the knowledge of Sheikh Wan Hasan bin Wan Ishak\u27s contribution to writing the book of Hidayat al-Mukhtar, a translation of the Arba\u27in Hadith, and also writing a translation of the book of Ayyuha al-Walad by Imam al-Gazali. Thailand merupakan daerah minoritas Muslim di Asia Tenggara dengan Pattani sebagai salah satu wilayahnya, salah satu ulama yang berpengaruh dalam bidang Hadis adalah Syekh Wan Hasan bin Wan Ishak al-Pattani. Adapun tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kontribusi syeikh Wan Hasan bin Wan Ishak al-Pattani di bidang Hadis.     Tezimizde 20. yüzyıl mutasavvıflarından olan Hasan Burkay’ın yaşamı, eserleri, kişilik özellikleri ele alınmıştır. Çalışmamızın amacı, birçok insanın hayatını derinden etkileyen, dini içselleştirmiş olan Hasan Burkay’ın kişilik özelliklerini Beş Faktörlü Kişilik Envanteri çerçevesinde incelemektir. Araştırmamız dört bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölümde Hasan Burkay’ın çocukluğu, gençliği, şeyh oluşu, mensup olduğu tarikat, eserleri, gösterdiği kerametler ele alınmıştır. Bu bölüm kendisi ve ihvanları tarafından yazılan eserlerden, belgesel ve sosyal medyadan yararlanılarak oluşturuldu. İkinci bölümde, kişilik, kişiliğe etki eden faktörler, din ve kişilik ilişkisi incelenmiştir. Üçüncü bölümde, Beş Faktörlü Kişilik Modeli’nin tanımı yapılmış, ortaya çıkış süreci ele alınmış ve modelin özelliklerine yer verilmiştir. Dördüncü bölümde, Hasan Burkay’ın en yakın çevresinden başlayarak dostları ve ihvanları ile yapılan görüşmelere yer verilmiş ve Hasan Burkay’ın kişiliği Beş Faktörlü Kişilik Envanteri çerçevesinde ele alınmıştır. Elde edilen veriler ışığında Hasan Burkay’ın nasıl bir kişilik yapısına sahip olduğu yorumlanmıştır. Ekler bölümünde, Hasan Burkay’ın kendisine, şeyhlerine ait fotoğraflar bulunmaktadır. Dini kişiliğine entegre ederek insanların hayatlarına kattığı farlı bakış açısı neticesinde kitleleri etkileyen mutasavvıf Hasan Burkay, 2005 yılında Ankara’da vefat etmiştir.In our thesis, the life, works and personality traits of Hasan Burkay, one of the 20th century mystics, are discussed. The aim of our study is to examine the personality traits of Hasan Burkay, who deeply affected the lives of many people and internalized religion in his personality, within the framework of The Big Five Personality Traits Scale. Our research consists of four sections. In the first chapter, Hasan Burkay's childhood, youth, being a sheikh, the sect he belonged to, his works, and miracles he showed are addressed. This section was constituted by utilizing the works written by him and his ikhwans, documentary and social media. In the second chapter, personality, the factors affecting personality and the relationship between religious and personality were examined. In the third chapter, the definition of The Big Five Personality Traits Scale is made, its emergence process is discussed and the features of the model are included. In the fourth section, starting from his immediate vicinity, interviews with Hasan Burkay's inseparables and ikhwans are included and Hasan Burkay's personality is discussed within the framework of The Big Five Personality Traits Scale. In the light of the data obtained what kind of personality structure Hasan Burkay had has been interpreted. In the appendix, there are photographs of Hasan Burkay himself and his sheikhs. By integrating religion into his personality the mystic Hasan Burkay, who influenced the masses as a result of the different perspective he brought to people’s lifes, passed away in Ankara in 2005

    Abstract: This article examines Sheikh Ali Hasan Ahmad Addary's role in Islamic education. The main methodology used in this study is historical analysis using a character study approach. A strong scientific spirit and religious family influences were important contributors to Addary's activity. Addary concentrated on three things throughout his life, including bureaucracy, social religion and islamic education initiator. He was an ASN (civil servant) of the Ministry of Religion and the founding Dean of IAIN Imam Bonjol Padang's Faculty of Education Padangsidimpuan branch.     Drivers of fashion overconsumption: a systematic literature review

    The trend of fashion overconsumption has intensified in recent years (Marques et al., 2020). Overconsumption is defined as “buying fashion items irresponsibly or in excessive amounts, leading to negative consequences (Hakansson, 2014; Pan, 2019).” It harms consumers, society, and the environment (Gadhavi &amp; Sahni, 2020; Xiao &amp; Nicholson, 2013), and significantly contributes to a throwaway culture, exploitative labor practices, resource scarcity and harmful materials use, which degrade the environment (Atik et al., 2022; Ciornea, 2020; Ullah et al., 2021). Stakeholders including, manufacturers, designers, suppliers, retailers, and consumers are encouraged to reduce overconsumption for sustainability (Weber &amp; Weber, 2022). Despite studies on the sharing economy and collaborative consumption, drivers of fashion overconsumption remain unexplored (Belk, 2014; Schor &amp; Fitzmaurice, 2015; Carol Cavender, 2018). This study aims to identify the factors that drive fashion overconsumption and analyze their relationship to overconsumption behavior using a conceptual framework. Key research purpose include: To identify the key drivers of fashion overconsumption.To examine the relationships between driving factors and overconsumption behavior.To develop a conceptual framework illustrating these relationships towards sustainable fashion consumption.Findings reveals that understanding overconsumption is key to promoting sustainable practices in fashion consumption patterns. SOR theory provides insight into the complex drivers behind fashion overconsumption. Raising stakeholder awareness especially the consumers is pivotal for fostering sustainable fashion consumption and shifting consumer perspectives can help mitigate the impact of overconsumption. The findings benefits industry practitioners to implement more sustainable practices that benefit environment and stakeholders through mitigating the impact of overconsumption. <br/

He worked as müderris, qadi and Sheikh al-Islam. Hasan Fehmi Efendi’s life is a success story of a young man from the countryside. It summarizes a lawyer’s life in the Ottoman state. It shows political conroversies caused by reform efforts.     Hz. Yakup’un soyundan gelen ve sayıları on iki olan Esbât, İslam duşuncesinde tartışmalı olan bir husustur. Sunni literaturde istisnalar olsa da, genel olarak Esbât’ın Hz. Yusuf’un kardeşleri olduğu ve bunların hepsinin Peygamberler olduğu duşuncesi hâkimken, Şii duşunce Hz. Yusuf’un kardeşlerinin Peygamber olduğu fikrini işledikleri buyuk gunahlar yuzunden reddetmektedir. Sunni ekol, on bir kardeşin tövbe ettiği için Peygamber olmalarına mumkun gözuyle bakarken, Şii ekol Peygamberlerin buyuk gunahlardan munezzeh olduklarının altını çizerek Kur’an’da zikri geçen Esbât’ın Hz. Yakup’un soyundan gelen başka Peygamberler olduğuna dikkatleri çekmiştir. Bazı modern dönem Şii alimleri Esbât’ın Peygamberler olmadığını, Peygamberler arası dönemde yaşamış Vasîler olduklarını savunmuştur. Kuveytli bir Şii alim olan Şeyh Ali Hasan Galum ise bu kavrama yeni bir bakış açısı getirerek, Kur’an’da geçen Esbât’ın Tevrat’ta geçen Hâkimler olduklarına, bunların On İki İmam gibi Peygamberler arası dönemde Peygamberlerin Vasîleri ve Velileri olarak yaşamış ve toplumda adaleti sağlamakla mukellef liderler olduklarına dikkatleri çekmiştir. Bununla, Tevrat’taki Hakimler olgusunu On İki İmam inancına referans olarak göstermeye çalışmıştır. Bu makalede, öncelikle Tevrat’ta geçen Esbât ve Hakimler kavramını ele aldıktan sonra Esbât kavramını önce Sünni kaynaklarda daha sonra da genel olarak Şii kaynaklarda nasıl ele alındığını kaleme alacağız. Sheikh Ali Hasan Galum adds a new idea to_x000D_ al-Asbât by arguing the similarity between the concept of al-Asbât in Quran with_x000D_ those Judges in Torah. He gives the concept of Judges and al-Asbât as a reference_x000D_ to Twelve Imams. This article, after explaining the concept of Judges in Judaism,_x000D_ will deal with the concept of al-Asbât in Sunni sources. After that it will explain_x000D_ the meaning of al-Asbât generally in Shia thought.
