Terror Capitalism and Uyghur Dispossession — with Darren Byler
Darren Byler a sociocultural anthropologist and assistant professor at Simon Fraser University\u27s School for International Studies.His research examines the dispossession of stateless populations through forms of contemporary capitalism and colonialism in China, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia. He has written two books, Terror Capitalism: Uyghur Dispossession and Masculinity in a Chinese City, and In the Camps: China\u27s High-Tech Penal Colony. Darren is part of the Xinjiang Documentation Project, which features personal testimonies and archives, internal police reports, translations and other documents about the ongoing detention of Turkic Muslims in China and the erasure of their native knowledge. His research is focused on representations of queerness, gender, and the body in horror film and television. He has published numerous academic articles, contributed to book collections, and is the author of Queer Horror Film and Television (I.B. Tauris, 2016) and co-editor of New Queer Horror Film and Television (UWP, 2020) with Dr John Edgar Browning. A prospective examination of Beck’s cognitive theory of depression in university students in mainland China
The current multi-wave longitudinal study examined the applicability of Beck’s (1967, 1983) cognitive theory of depression to university students in mainland China. During an initial assessment, participants completed measures assessing dysfunctional attitudes and depressive/anxious symptoms. Participants subsequently completed measures assessing negative events and depressive/anxious symptoms once a month for six months. Results provided support for the applicability of Beck’s cognitive theory to university students in mainland China. More specifically, higher levels of dysfunctional attitudes were associated with greater increases in depressive symptoms following the occurrence of negative events. At the same time, contrary to findings obtained in Western samples, higher levels of dysfunctional attitudes were also associated with greater increases in anxious symptoms following the occurrence of negative events. These findings may suggest that dysfunctional attitudes exhibit non-specificity as a predictor of depressive symptoms in mainland China.M.A.Includes bibliographical referencesby Darren Stolo
Epidemiological study of Campylobacter spp. colonisation of wild game pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) processed in Approved Game Handling Establishments in Scotland and its relevance to public health
This project was a year year part-time MSc project undertaken at the University of Edinburgh Vet School. The objectives of the project were to determine the prevalence of campylobacter species in wild game pheasants processed in Approved Game Handling Establishments (AGHE) in Scotland, to identify the strain types found in pheasants and to determine if these are the same as those isolated from broilers and humans in Scotland.
The research found that wild game birds are a reservoir of campylobacter. The STs found in pheasants are overall more common in livestock than chickens, raising the possibility of cross-infection between pheasants, cattle and sheep in the field. Two hundred and eighty seven caeca and 59 skin samples were collected from pheasant carcases during the hunting season 2013/2014. Laboratory isolation of campylobacter was performed using standard culture methods and positive caecal samples were subjected to PCR and High Throughput Multi Locus Sequence Typing (MLST). 36.5% of 287 caecal samples were campylobacter positive while all 59 skin samples were negative
Public health significance of Campylobacter spp. colonisation of wild game pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) in Scotland.
Campylobacter is the most common cause of bacterial food-borne diarrhoeal disease worldwide. Chicken meat is considered the main source of human infection; however, C. jejuni and C. coli have also been reported in a range of livestock and wildlife species, including pheasants. Wild pheasant meat reaches the consumer’s table because of hunting but there is a lack of information concerning the risk of Campylobacter infection in humans. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Campylobacter in wild game pheasants in Scotland, to identify the main sequence types (STs) present and to evaluate their impact on public health. A total of 287 caecal samples from five Scottish regions were collected during the hunting season 2013/2014. Campylobacter was detected and enumerated using standard culture methods. PCR and High Throughput Multi Locus Sequence Typing (HiMLST) were used for species identification and sequence typing. In total, 36.6% of 287 caecal samples (n=105; 95% CI: 14-59.2) were Campylobacter positive. Using PCR, 62.6% of samples (n=99) were identified as C. coli and 37.4% as C. jejuni. HiMLST (n=80) identified 19 different STs. ST-828 (n=19) was the most common, followed by ST-827 (n=12) and ST19 (n=7). Sixteen of the 19 STs isolated are present in humans and eight are C. coli STs that account for 6.96% of human infections, although the overall risk to public health from pheasant meat is still considered to be low

Diplomsko delo obravnava film Črni labod/Black Swan. Razčlenjuje mišljenje in delovanje glavnega filmskega lika in posledično splošno razumevanje človeka samega. Skozi film Črni labod sem iskal razlage o razvoju človekove osebnosti in jih s pomočjo teorij Sigmunda Freuda in Abrahama Maslowa razčlenil v razlagah filma po sekvencah. Vpliv družbe na posameznika je pomemben motiv v filmu, ki ga v nalogi razširjam s slogovnim zgodovinskim obdobjem dadaizma in predvsem nadrealizma in z razčlenjevanjem motiva laboda v književnosti in filmu. S tem pa poskušam pojasniti polje nezavednega, ki ga še vedno označujejo za bistveni del razlage osebnosti.
Človeška osebnost se oblikuje predvsem v obdobju odraščanja, zato sem se v nalogi najbolj posvetil temi razvoja iz otroka v odraslo osebo, ki jo razvija tudi režiser filma Darren Aronofsky.This thesis focusses on the film Black Swan. It deconstructs the thoughts and actions of the protagonist and through this, forms a possible understanding of the human being itself. Throughout the film the author has searched for the explanations of personal development, which he then analyses through Sigmund Freud\u27s and Abraham Maslow\u27s theories. Social influences upon an individual are an important motive in the filmin the thesis, this is examined through the lens of dadaism and surrealism and with the analysis of the swan motive in literature and in film. With this the author attempts to explain the field of subconscious, which is still perceived as a vital part of any explanation of personality.
The largest part of human personality is formed in the period of puberty, which is why the author has focused most of his attention upon the motive of a child growing into an adult, which is also the theme that the director Darren Aronofsky develops

Evaluation of predators as sentinels for emerging infectious diseases
New and emerging diseases in human and animal populations appear to be
predominately associated with generalist pathogens that are able to infect multiple
hosts. Carnivores are susceptible to a wide range of these pathogens and can act as
effective samplers of their vertebrate prey, which are important reservoirs of many
emerging diseases.
This thesis evaluates the utility of carnivores as sentinels for pathogens present in
their prey by exploration of four selected pathogen-prey-sentinel combinations in
three rural study sites of varying habitat in northern England and Scotland over a
twenty-two month period (2007-2009). Selected pathogens were Coxiella burnetii,
Leptospira spp., Encephalitozoon cuniculi, and rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus
(RHDV), selected prey species were wild rodents and rabbits, and selected
carnivores were foxes, domestic cats and corvids. Seroprevalence to C.burnetii,
Leptospira spp and E.cuniculi was assessed using adapted or novel test
methodologies to enable their use for multiple mammalian species, however these
were not applicable to corvids. RHDV seroprevalence was not assessed due to low
acquisition of rabbit samples.
Overall, seroprevalence to all three pathogens was significantly higher in predators
than prey, at 24.2% and 12.4 % for C.burnetii, 22.73% and 1.95% for Leptospira spp
and 39.06% and 5.31% for E.cuniculi in predator and prey species respectively. A
similar pattern was found in all study areas and was consistent irrespective of
individual prey or predator species, although serological evidence of exposure to
E.cuniculi was not detected in domestic cats in any area. A semi-quantitative
assessment of the time and financial costs of the study approach and application to
hypothetical examples indicates that sampling carnivores is a much more costeffective
approach to pathogen detection than sampling prey.
The results indicate that carnivores can act as useful sentinels for broad-scale
detection of pathogen presence and relative levels of prevalence in prey and predator
populations. Careful selection of predator species and methods of sample acquisition
are necessary to maximise their utility, and issues associated with diagnostic test
performance and validation must also be acknowledged. Suggestions are made as to
how this principle might be applied to future surveillance programmes. In addition,
the study is the first report on the seroprevalence of C.burnetii, Leptospira spp and
E.cuniculi in multiple wildlife species (field voles, bank voles, wood mice, foxes),
the first detection of antibodies to C. burnetii in wildlife and cats, the first detection
of antibodies to L mini, L hardjo prajitno and L hardjo bovis in wild rodents, and to
L mini in cats, and the first detection of antibodies to E.cuniculi in wild rodents and
foxes in the UK
