Inland Salt
This work, a small single room installation, was my contribution to the 2015 Palimpsest Biennale in Mildura, and was shown at the ADFA building in the town's centre. On an initial research trip in July, 2015, I stopped at a dried out salt lake near Wentworth. Beach-like, the lake left a tidal line along a curving shore. The vegetation looked like ocean flora; there was the glimmering saltiness of everything, and saltbush everywhere. It brought to mind Sturt's hankering for an inland sea, and his wishful voyage along the Murray, that led him out, not in. This work puts these observations together: a drawing, made from the sanded emboss of saltbush leaves, runs, riverlike, across the space. A looped film of clouds reflected in a shallow saltlake, recalls the dream of an inland sea, supported by the sound of ocean
Wonder and method
In this paper, my aim is to address the twin concerns raised in this session - models of practice and geographies or spaces of practice - through regarding a selection of works and processes that have arisen from my recent research. Setting up this discussion, I first present a short critique of the idea of models of creative practice, recognising possible problems with the attempt to generalise or abstract its complexities. Working through a series of portraits of my working environment, I will draw from Lefebvre’s Rhythmanalysis as a way of understanding an art practice both spatially and temporally, suggesting that changes and adjustments can occur through attending to both intuitions and observations of the complex of rhythmic layers constantly at play in any event. Reflecting on my recent studio practice I explore these rhythms through the evocation of a twin axis: the horizontal and the vertical and the arcs of difference or change that occur between them, in both spatial and temporal senses. What this analysis suggests is the idea that understanding does not only emerge from the construction of general principles, derived from observation of the particular, but that the study of rhythms allows us to maintain the primacy of the particular. This makes it well suited to a study of creative methods and objects, since it is to the encounter with and expression of the particular that art practices, most certainly my own, are frequently directed
Optical imaging of the effect of in-plane fields on cholesteric liquid crystals

Copyright © 2008 by the American Physical Society.The effects of in-plane electric fields on the director structure of cholesteric liquid crystals has been imaged in three dimensions using fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy. The results show that a liquid crystal lying outside the electrode gap can be significantly affected by stray fields occurring above the electrode surface, resulting in a 90° rotation of the cholesteric helix. Distinct differences between the behavior of cholesterics with positive and negative dielectric anisotropies are observed

Dispatch, Smith and Jewell Counties

When the church split along doctrinal lines, two cemeteries evolved for two different church populations. The main church was founded in 1871; the split occurred in 1872. The landscape of this area still reveals its early history. The bleak, flat prairies stretching around a large church and its two graveyards tell a tale of dissent and survival. The author, connected through family to these Dutch settlers, provides photographs and stories
Contracted site: Artist on paper, drawing
Traditionally the notion of drawing in-situ has suggested the physical presence of the artist in the environment under scrutiny. The assumption here of enhanced connectivity, however, is hasty in light of the idea that situation implies a relative spatial value determined by the interplay of subject and location, where the possibility of not being “in-situ” is problematic. The fact that traditional drawing in-situ, such as the rendering of landscape, requires a framing of the world “out there” suggests a distance between the perceived object of representation and the drawing surface. Rather than suggesting that some drawing is situated and other sorts of drawing are not, however, I argue that situation or site is variously extended and intensified depending on the nature of mediation between surface and environment. The suggestion here is that site is not so much a precondition as a performative function, developed in the act of drawing and always implicating the drawing surface. In my discussion I focus on specific works by Toba Khedoori and Cameron Robbins. As well, in using my own recent drawing practice as a case study, I argue that the geography of site is delimited neither by horizon nor the boundaries of the paper. Rather, I propose that site and drawing surface coincide in variously intensive and extensive ways

It seeks to express the intertwining and blurring of nature and culture in the traditional methods and idiosyncratic expression of these two artists
Matter and movement: Expression as topological continuity or a return to Butades' wall
This paper aims to address the ways in which drawing can be understood as the becoming-expressive of materials, site, and body, over time. The discussion pivots around a series of studies that replace linear or causal relationships – in history, drawing and expression – with topological movement. My approach is largely through a speculative case study. In a rereading of the familiar Butades myth, I examine how a shadow tracing can variously be taken as the first mimetic art with its origins in the urge to “capture”, and, antithetically, as the originary expressive folding of matter, site and body.\ud

The paper is divided into five sections. The first presents the Butades myth, identifying the representational problem that lies at the roots of its traditional telling. The next three sections outline a series of topologies that facilitate a discussion of the Butades myth from historical, disciplinary, and expressive perspectives. The final section aims to show the relevance of this discussion to a contemporary drawing practice, using my own drawing research as a case study.\ud

The field of inquiry is that of representational critique. The fold, an image associated with a topological geometry, replaces the relational or signifying disjuncture of representational structures, and suggests a becoming- expressive of subject and object, form and matter
Humane Society v. Jewell: The Court Cries Wolf
In Humane Society of the United States v. Jewell, a federal district court invalidated the Endangered Species Act (ESA) delisting of wolves in the western Great Lakes (WGL) Distinct Population Segment. This decision culminated a long history of litigation over wolves in the WGL region, and has generated a political backlash, with congressional attempts to delist wolves and to weaken the ESA itself. The author argues that the Jewell court\u27s analysis is erroneous on several central legal issues. As a policy matter, delisting the WGL wolves and returning them to state control should increase social tolerance of wolves, which is key to the long-term survival of the wolf
Senatorial Politics and Foreign Policy
Bipartisanship has become so associated with the conduct of foreign policy that partisanship has virtually been forgotten. In this persuasive study of senatorial politics, Malcolm E. Jewell reasserts the importance of partisanship, arguing that increased party responsibility is the best guarantee for the establishment of sound policy and for the continued support of policy once established. The author bases his conclusions on a study of the Senate during the Truman and Eisenhower administrations.
