Abstract
In this paper, we analyse the impact of fiscal shocks on the Indian economy using structural vector autoregression (SVAR) methodology. The study uses quarterly data for the period 1997Q1 to 2009Q2. Two different identification schemes have been used to assess the effects of shocks to government spending and tax revenues on output. The recursive scheme is based on the Cholesky decomposition and the second identification scheme Blanchard & Perrotti (1999) technique of using information on tax system to identify the SVAR model. We find that the impulse responses obtained from both identification schemes behave in a similar fashion but the value of multipliers differs. Also the shock to tax variable has a bigger impact on GDP than the government spending shock. In the extended four variable VAR model the effects of fiscal shocks on private consumption has been assessed using the recursive identification scheme. Findings indicate that the tax variable has larger impact on private consumption as compared to the government spending variable. In the short run the impact of expansionary fiscal shocks follow Keynesian tradition but the long run response is mixed

Bioremediation of Soil Contaminated with Arsenic
Human-industrial activity causes a remarkable increase in the arsenic (As) environmental concentrations, with a potential impact in plant and animal health, and may cause severe losses in biodiversity. This metalloid is bioaccumulative through the food chain and highly associated with different types of cancers. To overcome the inherent drawbacks of physicochemical removal techniques, biological treatments arose as adequate and cost-effective remediation alternatives for As pollution. An interest arises from the endophytes, which live inside the host plant and have been studied for their plant growth-promoting properties, production of bioactive molecules, biocontrol processes, and As detoxification. The integration of bioremediation with multiple omic technologies provides, moreover, innovative approaches to handle As remediation. The aim of this review is to show the latest knowledge, advances, and applications in arsenic bioremoval. Optimization of carbon electrodes derived from epoxy-based photoresist
In this contribution we report on results from an optimization study of SU-8 photoresist derived carbon electrodes. SU-8 derived carbon tends to be glassy in nature, however, based on the exact pyrolysis strategy and other fabrication parameters employed one can obtain a range of electrical, electrochemical and thermal properties related to the variation of the graphitic content of the thus obtained carbon. Hence, in order to obtain electrodes that emulate or improve upon the performance of commercially available glassy carbon (GC) electrodes, the right choice of pyrolysis conditions, and fabrication parameters such as the polymer patterning method, the nature of the substrate, polymer precursor film thickness and dimensions of the electrodes are all important. Carbon electrodes made employing a variety of pyrolysis times and pyrolysis end temperatures, film thicknesses and substrates are investigated by cyclic voltammetry of a redox probe ([Fe(CN)(6)](4-)), resistance measurements and spectroscopic analysis (Raman and XRD). SU-8 derived carbon electrodes displayed a wide potential stability window even in acidic media comparable to that of commercially available GC electrodes. Finally, these electrodes were applied to the simultaneous detection of traces of Cd(II) and Pb(II) through anodic stripping voltammetry and detection limits as low as 0.7 and 0.8 mu gL(-1) were achieved
How perception of status differences affects our decision making
As human beings, we aspire higher to achieve greater security in our lives. We assess our standing in society in relative terms. Past studies have shown that our subjective social status relative to society can determine health consequences (Operario et al, 2004). Yet, we have a limited understanding of how to measure our subjective status and how that affects our decision making and behavior. Understanding these may reveal important information about how perception of status differences affects behavior. Therefore, the primary goal of this dissertation is to closely examine perception of status in order to evaluate its subsequent effect on decision making. Four studies were conducted to examine the relationship between status perceptions and decision making. In the first study, we established a laboratory manipulation of status, designed and validated appropriate questionnaires, and probed its effects on decision making via an economic game called the Ultimatum Game. In study 2, we examined how perception of status affected choice of an experimental status symbol. Both of these studies showed a negative relationship with decision making. In study 1, the low status subjects, who felt inferior to their partner, shared more with their high status partners. And in study 2, we observed that in certain contexts, the low status subjects, who felt inferior to their partner, chose the experimental status symbol more. However, in study 3, when we made the experimental situation riskier, subjects who perceived themselves to be inferior to their partner chose the status symbol less than their high status counterparts. In addition, low status subjects showed more affinity for risk at specific levels. In study 4, we examined if these effects were due to self-esteem and found no effect of self-esteem. Together, these studies showed that laboratory manipulations of status can capture psychological aspects of the status experience and may induce a compensatory tendency. These compensatory tendencies may vary depending on both status of the subject and riskiness of the situation. Studying status in a laboratory setting allows researchers to understand these behaviors more closely and speculate on how to best address status concerns for the betterment of society.Ph. Farmers' income and food security under contemporary policy regime in India : Insights from Punjab
It has been well argued that the declining viability in the agriculture sector is creating conditions of distress and crisis. Despite this, the agriculture sector has not received adequate public policy attention from the perspective of food security and farmers’ income in the country. Public policy framework may transform the growth of the sector which may ultimately influence farmers’ income as well as food security of the country. Therefore, it is important to understand the current challenges of public policy interventions for the sector. In this regard, this chapter attempts the following questions: What are the existing trends of public expenditure towards agriculture and allied sectors in India and Punjab in particular? What would be the possible implications of recent patterns of public expenditure on food security and farmers’ income? Lastly, it recommends to promote a progressive fiscal approach for the sector with adequate attention on public goods for long-term and sustained growth for small-holding farming
