    Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) are an increasing threat to public health on a global scale. In recent times, the most prominent outbreaks have constituted RNA viruses, spreading via droplets (COVID-19 and Influenza A H1N1), directly between humans (Ebola and Marburg), via arthropod vectors (Dengue, Zika, West Nile, Chikungunya, Crimean Congo) and zoonotically (Lassa fever, Nipah, Rift Valley fever, Hantaviruses). However, specific approved antiviral therapies and vaccine availability are scarce, and public health measures remain critical. Patients can present with a spectrum of ocular manifestations. Emerging infectious diseases should therefore be considered in the differential diagnosis of ocular inflammatory conditions in patients inhabiting or returning from endemic territories, and more general vigilance is advisable in the context of a global pandemic. Eye specialists are in a position to facilitate swift diagnosis, improve clinical outcomes, and contribute to wider public health efforts during outbreaks. This article reviews those emerging viral diseases associated with reports of ocular manifestations and summarizes details pertinent to practicing eye specialists.</p

    The Light We Give: Sikh Wisdom for Cultivating Empathy and Justice

    Growing up in South Texas, Dr. Simran Jeet Singh and his brothers confronted racism daily. As a turbaned, bearded, brown-skinned Sikh, he continued to face prejudice and hate in college and beyond. Simran chose to be defined not by the negativity that often surrounded him but by the Sikh teachings of love and justice that he grew up with. Delving deep into these core tenets of Sikh wisdom, he has sought to embrace an outlook that guides us to see the good in everyone and to forge a path of positivity, connection, and service—a way of life that so many of us are seeking in today’s world. We all say that we choose love over hate. But when tested, we realize that it’s easier said than done and that our empathy for others is not rooted deeply enough. As a turbaned and bearded Sikh man, Simran has been subjected to racism his whole life. He has been working on the frontlines of hate violence for more than a decade. And yet, he has managed to avoid falling into the toxic trap of hate and anger. In this lecture, drawing on his recent book The Light We Give, he will draw from his personal experiences and from hate incidents he has witnessed firsthand to share the wisdom he has gained on what it really takes to choose love over hate. Simran Jeet Singh, Ph.D., is the Executive Director of the Religion & Society Program at the Aspen Institute and the author of the national bestseller The Light We Give: How Sikh Wisdom Can Transform Your Life (Riverhead, Penguin Random House).     Printable Graphene-Sustainable Elastomer-Based Cross Talk Free Sensor for Point of Care Diagnostics

    Developing sensors for monitoring physiological parameters such as temperature and strain for point of care (POC) diagnostics is critical for better care of the patients. Various commercial sensors are available to get the job done; however, challenges like the structural rigidity of such sensors confine their usage. As an alternative, flexible sensors have been looked upon recently. In most cases, flexible sensors cannot discriminate the signals from different stimuli. While there have been reports on the printable sensors providing cross-talk-free solutions, research related to developing sensors from a sustainable source providing discriminability between signals is not well-explored. Herein, we report the development of a stencil printable composition made of graphene and epoxidized natural rubber. The stencil printability index was vetted using rheological studies. Post usage, the developed sensor was dissolved in an organic solvent at room temperature. This, along with the choice of a sustainable elastomer, warrants the minimization of electronic waste and carbon footprint. The developed material demonstrated good conformability with the skin and could perceive and decouple the signals from temperature and strain without inducing any crosstalks. Using a representative volume element model, a comparison between experimental findings and computation studies was made. The developed sensors demonstrated gauge factors of −506 and 407 in the bending strain regimes of 0–0.04% and 0.04%–0.09%, respectively, while the temperature sensitivity was noted to be −0.96%/°C. The printed sensors demonstrated a multifunctional sensing behavior for monitoring various active physiological parameters ranging from temperature, strain, pulse, and breathing to auditory responses. Using a Bluetooth module, various parameters like temperature and strain could be monitored seamlessly in a smart-phone. The current development would be crucial to open new avenues to fabricate crosstalk-free sensors from sustainable sources for POC diagnostics

    Printable Carbon Nanotube-Liquid Elastomer-Based Multifunctional Adhesive Sensors for Monitoring Physiological Parameters

    Developing a printed elastomeric wearable sensor with good conformity and proper adhesion to skin, coupled with the capability of monitoring various physiological parameters, is very crucial for the development of point-of-care sensing devices with high precision and sensitivity. While there have been previous reports on the fabrication of elastomeric multifunctional sensors, research on the printable elastomeric multifunctional adhesive sensor is not very well explored. Herein, we report the development of a stencil printable multifunctional adhesive sensor fabricated in a solvent-free condition, which demonstrated the capability of having good contact with skin and its ability to function as a temperature and strain sensor. Functionalized liquid isoprene rubber was selected as the matrix while carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (c-CNTs) were used as the nanofiller. The selection of the above model compounds facilitated the printability and also helped the same composition to demonstrate stretchability and adhesiveness. A realistic three-dimensional microstructure (representative volume element model) was generated through a computational framework for the current c-CNT-liquid elastomer. Further computational simulations were performed to test and validate the correlation between electrical responses to that of experimental studies. Various physiological parameters like motion sensing, pulse, respiratory rate, and phonetics detection were detected by leveraging the electrically resistive nature of the sensor. This development route can be extended toward developing different innovative adhesives for point-of-care sensing applications

    Today, the issues of women rights in muslim personal law is highly controversial. Specially, muslim women rights relating to triple talaq, inheritance, maintenance has got much attention nowadays. A muslim man can divorce his wife by prouncing three times talaq. When husband clearly mentions it is called as express talaq. After that husband and wife cannot be together back until wife marries someone else. The legal decisions are based on the norms mentioned in quaran therefore, certain anomalies need to be eradicated by giving true essence of holy quaran for the benefit of muslim women's right. There is three types of talaq namely, unlike other religion marriage is viewed as sacrament but, under, muslim law it is civil and social contract. Talaq ul sunnat sanctioned by prophet is sub divided into Talaq e ehsan, Talaq hasan, Talaq e biddat. The current debate on triple talaq, centred on the Sharaya Bano and several other petitions which considers no aspect of Islamic personal laws which amounts to violate the spirit of constitution. The whole triple talaq has become a battleground for the culture vs social debate. In this paper the author deals with the question of triple talaq in the light of the recent petition filed in the Supreme Court for declaring such talaq invalid. The author argues that there is an already existing legal precedent established by the apex court with respect triple talaq which should be followed instead of resorting in aggressive approach which may become dominant to muslim women themselves. This research paper analyze to attempt the on going implications on triple talaq, muslim personal law and solutions to empower muslim women.     A Retrospective Analysis of the Prevalence of Distribution of Oral Mucosal Lesions (OMLs) among the People of Delhi NCR

    INTRODUCTION: The presence of Oral Mucosal Lesions (OMLs) in one’s oral mucosa can lead to unwanted consequences and mostly are due to tobacco use. AIM: To document the prevalence of OMLs among patients of Delhi NCR and provide health education counselling to those under the grip of this evil practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of a total of 402 subjects visiting various screening camps in Delhi NCR and recalled a total of 174 patients, out of which 161 reported back to us for further diagnosis and screening of OMLs. The examination of patients in the camp were an ADA type III examination. All patients we given a health education while tobacco users were also given a specialized one-on-one health education regarding the tobacco and its ill effects as well as techniques for cessation. A descriptive analysis of the sample was first performed using means (±standard deviation (SD)) for continuous variables and frequencies (proportions) for categorical variables. The chi-square test was used for statistical analysis and to find significant difference, if any. RESULTS: Among the 402 subjects screened, the mean age was 33.24±6.74 Years and most of the study population belonged to the age group of 25-60 Years [178(44.3%)]. 301(74.8%) of the study population were males. The main chief complaint was periodontal problem [187(46.5%)], while 15 patients (3.73%) came for regular check-up. The prevalence of leukoplakia was found to be 8.70% and OSMF was found to be 6.21%. A significant difference was seen among gingivitis with respect to age and gender (p<.05), leukoplakia and frictional keratosis was seen significant in relation to gender. In all significant cases, Males were more prone to get these OMLs as compared to females CONCLUSION: It is advised that regular Oral Health Drives and counselling sessions be arranged for the people of Delhi NCR to reduce the burden of the OMLs

    Investigation of molecular and physiological early warning signals: towards the precision diagnosis of maternal sepsis

    Background Immunometabolic changes that transpire during pregnancy in some way parallel the body’s response to infection. For example neutrophils go up in pregnancy and infection. This similarity complicates the diagnosis of maternal sepsis, a severe syndrome defined as a maladapted response to infection. Currently, maternal sepsis is poorly managed, with underand over-diagnosis being common. However, our understanding of immunology means there are likely to be specific immunometabolic signatures in the bloodstream that can be used as biomarkers to augment the early detection and clinical management of maternal sepsis. A more timely and accurate diagnosis will lead to better clinical management and outcomes for patients. Results Initially a PRISMA approach was used to write a systemic review of the literature on immunology in pregnancy – which was rewritten into a review (1), which encompassed the similarities between sepsis and infection – postulating that pregnancy provides an immunometabolic stepping-stone to sepsis. This work enabled myself and colleagues to establish an observational cohort study (2) to identify new biomarkers for maternal sepsis and development of a virtual reality training tool for students and staff (3). A key clinical biomarker identified was a sustained temperature >37.5C (ROC Area under the curve = 0.802). Through whole blood RNA-sequencing a few genes were identified to show a differentiation between labour and sepsis (chorioamnionitis) eg atosa. Through this work it was also established that sepsis recognition amongst clinicians is poor and therefore a virtual reality simulation training tool was created and tested. This was shown to increase confidence in recognition of sepsis amongst medical students. Discussion Overall this thesis demonstrated that improving maternal sepsis diagnosis and treatment requires better knowledge of maternal immune system and use of precise biomarkers. Maternal immune system acts as a stepping-stone to sepsis and some novel genes and proteins may lead the way in better diagnosis
