    A pocket-integrated miniature, dual-band, and high gain textile MIMO antenna for 5G and WiFi wearable applications

    This paper reports a miniature low-profile denim textile 2-port MIMO (multiple-input-multiple-output) antenna for dual-bands: 5G sub-6 3.5 GHz and Wi-Fi 5.2 GHz wearable applications. This MIMO antenna has impedance bandwidths and peak gain of 310 MHz and 8.3 dBi and 950 MHz 13.0 dBi at 3.5 and 5.2 GHz, respectively. This MIMO antenna has a compact area of 0.078 λ02, with both antenna elements of the MIMO being a modified elliptical patch, L-shaped stubs for impedance matching, and a circular decoupling ring to achieve > 25 dB port isolation. The designed antenna is very tiny and integrated into the shirt's pocket. It is tested in two positions, i.e., hidden (integrated inside the pocket, for example, military applications) and visible (when integrated on the pocket surface for conventional communication). Moreover, the antenna's working is analyzed in these positions (hidden and visible), and it was found that it functions well in both 5G sub-6 GHz and Wi-Fi frequency bands with nearly close gain values and communication range. This MIMO antenna has a very small ECC (envelope correlation coefficient) of 0.006/0.002 in both frequency bands, which shows high channel isolation. The 1 gm/10 gm SAR (specific absorption rate) values at 3.5 and 5.2 GHz are 0.034/0.057 and 0.026/0.0132 W/Kg, respectively, substantially lesser than the recommended values of FCC/ICNIRP

    A Compact Wearable Textile Antenna for NB-IoT and ISM Band Patient Tracking Applications

    This paper proposes a novel multi-band textile monopole antenna for patient tracking applications. The designed antenna has compact footprints (0.13 lambda 02) and works in the narrow band-internet of things (NB-IoT) 1.8 GHz, radio frequency identification (RFID), and industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) 2.45 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands. The impedance bandwidths and gain of the antenna at 1.8 GHz, 2.45 GHz, and 5.8 GHz are 310 MHz, 960 MHz, and 1140 MHz; 3.7 dBi, 5.3 dBi, and 9.6 dBi, respectively. Also, the antenna's behavior is checked on different body parts of the human body in various bending scenarios. As per the evaluated link budget, the designed antenna can easily communicate up to 100 m of distance. The specific absorption rate values of the designed antenna are also within acceptable limits as per the (FCC/ICNIRP) standards at the reported frequency bands. Unlike traditional rigid antennas, the proposed textile antenna is non-intrusive, enhancing user safety and comfort. The denim material makes it comfortable for extended wear, reducing the risk of skin irritation. It can also withstand regular wear and tear, including stretching and bending. The presented denim-based antenna can be seamlessly integrated into clothing and accessories, making it less obtrusive and more aesthetically pleasing

    A rare mutation in an infant-derived HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein alters interprotomer stability and susceptibility to broadly neutralizing antibodies targeting the trimer apex

    The envelope glycoprotein (Env) of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is the sole target of broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs). Several mechanisms, such as the acquisition of mutations, variability of the loop length, and alterations in the glycan pattern, are employed by the virus to shield neutralizing epitopes on Env to sustain survival and infectivity within the host. The identification of mutations that lead to viral evasion of the host immune response is essential for the optimization and engineering of Env-based trimeric immunogens. Here, we report a rare leucine-to-phenylalanine escape mutation (L184F) at the base of hypervariable loop 2 (population frequency of 0.0045%) in a 9-month-old perinatally HIV-1-infected infant broad neutralizer. The L184F mutation altered the trimer conformation by modulating intramolecular interactions stabilizing the trimer apex and led to viral escape from autologous plasma bnAbs and known N160 glycan-targeted bnAbs. The L184F amino acid change led to the acquisition of a relatively open trimeric conformation, often associated with tier 1 HIV-1 isolates and increased susceptibility to neutralization by polyclonal plasma antibodies of weak neutralizers. While there was no impact of the L184F mutation on free virus transmission, a reduction in cell-to-cell transmission was observed. In conclusion, we report a naturally selected viral mutation, L184F, that influenced a change in the conformation of the Env trimer apex as a mechanism of escape from contemporaneous plasma V2 apex-targeted nAbs. Further studies should be undertaken to define viral mutations acquired during natural infection, to escape selection pressure exerted by bnAbs, to inform vaccine design and bnAb-based therapeutic strategies. IMPORTANCE The design of HIV-1 envelope-based immunogens capable of eliciting broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) is currently under active research. Some of the most potent bnAbs target the quaternary epitope at the V2 apex of the HIV-1 Env trimer. By studying naturally circulating viruses from a perinatally HIV-1-infected infant with plasma neutralizing antibodies targeted to the V2 apex, we identified a rare leucine-to-phenylalanine substitution, in two out of six functional viral clones, that destabilized the trimer apex. This single-amino-acid alteration impaired the interprotomeric interactions that stabilize the trimer apex, resulting in an open trimer conformation and escape from broadly neutralizing autologous plasma antibodies and known V2 apex-directed bnAbs, thereby favoring viral evasion of the early bnAb response of the infected host. Defining the mechanisms by which naturally occurring viral mutations influence the sensitivity of HIV-1 to bnAbs will provide information for the development of vaccines and bnAbs as anti-HIV-1 reagents.</p

    Optimization of an M/M/1/N Feedback Queue with Retention of Reneged Customers

    Customer impatience has become a threat to the business world. Firms employ various customer retention strategies to retain their impatient (or reneged) customers. Customer retention mechanisms may help to retain some or all impatient customers. Further, due to unsatisfactory service, customers may rejoin a queue immediately after departure. Such cases are referred to as feedback customers. Kumar and Sharma take this situation into account and study an M/M/1/N feedback queuing system with retention of reneged customers. They obtain only a steady-state solution for this model. In this paper, we extend the work of Kumar and Sharma by performing an economic analysis of the model. We develop a model for the costs incurred and perform the appropriate optimization. The optimum system capacity and optimum service rate are obtained. (original abstract
