A “pulpitumic” school: The place to project architecture into the consciousness of the public

    No full text
Architectural pedagogy is distinctive from the traditional classroom learning due to its studio-based system. The majority of student time is spent in studios on tasks of developing and refining their designs. It is a direct reflection of passion and dedication towards architectural learning. But this passion is rarely exposed to the public, and the public seldom realized the hard work needed to create the built environment they live in. A place is needed to project the importance of architecture into the consciousness of the public audience. At the present time, the building for the Unitec School of Architecture is causing seclusion from public and constraints on its spatial organisation. It does not advertise its education to the public and the architecture was never designed for its current programme. This has presented an opportunity to design a new building as an exploration of a typological architectural expression for architectural education. It could also become a place to publicise architecture, so it becomes a ‘pulpitumic’ school. The passion and dedication of students will no longer be hidden; their skill and artistry will be showcased to a wider audience. This project is an architectural dialogue between the public realm and the school realm. The merge of both realms is essential to give ‘pulpitumic’ qualities to this new school of architecture

A novel modeling method to evaluate the bioactive contributions of compositions in traditional Chinese medicine

    No full text
AbstractA new modeling method to evaluate multiple compositions' bioactive contribution against the whole traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) extracts was presented and a real sample experiment was carried out for demonstration. The quantitates and antioxidant effects of different DanShen extracts and 13 chemical components were evaluated and evolved in the model by curve fitting and least square optimization. From the model, each component's bioactivity was predicted and the individual contribution over the whole antioxidant activity was calculated also. These data will provide valuable guides for finding new potential bioactive component in TCM

Venenum bufonis (VB) induced vascular irritation was related with the regulation of TLR/MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway, and liposome encapsulation significantly attenuated VB induced vascular irritation while maintaining its anticancer activity.</p

Using UPLC–QTOF-MS to Analyze the Chemical Changes between Traditional and Dispensing Granule Decoctions of San-Ao-Tang

In the present study, a chemical profiling approach based on ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array detection and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC–PDA-TOF-MS) was proposed to rapidly evaluate the chemical consistency between traditional and dispensing granule decoctions of traditional medicine combinatorial formulae and validated using San-Ao-Tang (SAT) as a model combinatorial formula. SAT is an effective tradition-al Chinese medicine, which is usually used in treating asthma and other diseases of the respiratory system. Two decoctions were pre-pared: traditional decoction, which is a water extract of three mixed constituent herbs of SAT; and dispensing granule decoction, which is a mixed water extract of each individual herb of SAT. Batches of these two decoction samples were subjected to UPLC–PDA-TOF-MS analysis and the data sets of tR-m/z pairs, ion intensities and sample codes were processed with supervised orthogonal partial least squared discriminant analysis to holistically compare their differ-ences. Once a clear classification trend was found in the score plot, further statistics were performed to generate points at the two ends of S, and the components that correlated to these ions were regarded as the most changed components during decoction of the combina-torial formula. The changed components were identified by compar-ing the mass/ultraviolet spectra and retention times with those of reference compounds and/or tentatively assigned by matching em-pirical molecular formulae with those of the known compounds pub-lished in the literature. Using the proposed approach, global chemical differences were found between traditional and dispensing granule decoctions, like ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, norpseudoe-phedrine, licorice saponine H2, licorice saponine G2 and amygdalin

Xiexin Tang improves the symptom of type 2 diabetic rats by modulation of the gut microbiota

AbstractType 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), a chronic metabolic disease which severely impairs peoples’ quality of life, currently attracted worldwide concerns. There are growing evidences that gut microbiota can exert a great impact on the development of T2DM. Xiexin Tang (XXT), a traditional Chinese medicine prescription, has been clinically used to treat diabetes for thousands of years. However, few researches are investigated on the modulation of gut microbiota community by XXT which will be very helpful to unravel how it works. In this study, bacterial communities were analyzed based on high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results indicated that XXT could notably shape the gut microbiota. T2DM rats treated with XXT exhibited obvious changes in the composition of the gut microbiota, especially for some short chain fatty acids producing and anti-inflammatory bacteria such as Adlercreutzia, Alloprevotella, Barnesiella, [Eubacterium] Ventriosum group, Blautia, Lachnospiraceae UCG-001, Papillibacter and Prevotellaceae NK3B31 group. Additionally, XXT could also significantly ameliorate hyperglycemia, lipid metabolism dysfunction and inflammation in T2DM rats. Moreover, the correlation analysis illustrated that the key microbiota had a close relationship with the T2DM related indexes. The results probably provided useful information for further investigation on its active mechanism and clinical application.</jats:p
