About Liu Xin's "Shang Shan jing Biao"
Liu Xin 劉歆 was the first person to collate Shan Hai Jing 山海經. His "Shang Shan Hai Jing Biao 上山海經表" ("Presenting Shan Hai Jing to the emperor") praised Shan Hai Jing, and said it was an excellent ancient text that was equal to Yu Gong 禹貢. But the collating of Shan Hai Jing with the signature by Liu Xin is cruder compared with other books that Liu Xin and his father Liu Xiang 劉向 collated. Why was this so poorly done? When Liu Xin was collating Shan Hai Jing, a political struggle of the party who supported Wang Mang 王莽 and the party who protected the Han 漢 royal family became more and more heated. Wang Mang and his party aroused social unrest by various predictions, and were holding the real power of Han dynasty. Liu Xin, he was a member of Han royal family, advocated the Gu-wen-xue 古文學 (ancient text study) whose principle is rationalism, in order to oppose Wang Mang. For him, Shan Hai Jing was an ancient text that can supplement Yu Gong. So, he collated it, presented to Ai di 哀帝, and asked courtiers for supporting the Gu-wen-xue. However, because of the political turmoil, the collating was not properly done. Thus, it was criticized by the courtiers who suppoerted Wang Mang, and Liu Xin and his party were driven out the capital. At the same time, he succeeded his father and finished editing Qi-lüe 七略, but cculd not collate it properly, either. Therefore there were errors about the number of the volumes, which are in conflict with those of Shan Hai Jing. In the present paper, I examine the social context of his collations in detail
Conception of Terrestrial Organization in the Shan Hai Jing
Dorofeeva-Lichtmann Vera V. Shan Hai Jing : the accounts of four races
After much consideration, I have chosen to work with fantasy genre. Fantasy offers great freedom to the designer, and posses great attraction to audience. Being China born, I would like to contribute in broadcasting the charm of Chinese culture. There are countless myths and folk stories related to fantasy of China. With an undeniably long history, various racial groups and vast land, stories exist in numerous versions all over China. Quite a number of similar stories are passed down in different regions. It was hard to determine which is the most representative. Besides, due to the rule of atheist communism and massive cultural destruction during Cultural Revolution, many tales were lost in parts or in full. So I decided to give up on tales passed down till today, and work on the origin of all Chinese myths and folk tales, the Shan Hai Jing.
Shan Hai Jing was written in classical Chinese, which is quite different from modern Chinese in both grammar and vocabulary. Therefore even though I had known the text and had interest in it since young, I did not have enough motivation to explore its content. The Final Year Project offered me a perfect chance to understand this ancient text. Shan Hai Jing, The Account of Four Races is an experimental project aimed to reconstruct the fantasy world recorded in the Chinese classical text Shan Hai Jing, or Classics of The Mountains and Seas. The project studies the information regarding the four races recorded in Shan Hai Jing, together with the monster, immortals and natural environment around it. The project aims to illustrate the possible connections between the civilizations and nature, which is the link missing in the text.Bachelor of Fine Art
Analyzes creation of the Shan Hai Jing gods and monsters shape
[[abstract]]Shan Hai Jing is an encyclopaedia of ancient China which has eighteen chapters and thirty thousand words approximately. The first five chapters name Wu Zang Shan Jing, abbreviated name Shan Jing. Formerly the last thirteen chapters has no proper nouns, both Regions Beyond seas and regions within seas are the mainly scriptures that called Hai Jing as well. The phrases of Shan Hai Jing are simple and short statement, however, the content relates inclusive of everything. The descriptions are usually of geography, astronomy, meteorology, biology, mineralogy, medicine, water conservancy, archaeology, anthropology, oceanology, the history of technology, nationality, religion, mythology, etc. Scholar Guo Pu had mentioned that it’s hard to define Shan Hai Jing if you are not the most knowledgeable person of the world. It’s thus evident that widespread knowledge of content. Furthermore, there’re about 377 descriptions of appearance for gods and monsters (without foreign country and people). The most attractive part and cause everyone’s imagination in the book is descriptions of unusual appearances and multiplex features.
The viewpoint of Shan Hai Jin is probing into the theory of western semiotics in the research, and analyze combinations of symbols for structures descriptively. As many scholars thought, it proves objectively that Shan Hai Jing has the same style of statement. Moreover, it shows the condition of symbolic application and creation. The unusual symbolism is mixing false and true, it also includes the experience of observation and the symbolic significance which used by people for description or define everything of the world, even the way of pass down the history. Strictly speaking, they are different from general Chinese myths which are made up.
During the creation of this research, combining the myths of Shan Hai Jing and currently issues of Taiwan’s society via symbolism and re-coding. It’s not only a new annotation in creation, but also a metaphor of symbols. The innovative feature stimulates viewers’ emotions, and it would attract more people doing the research and creation at traditional Chinese culture.
