Fieldlab Events Phase 3: Nudging

No full text
At Fieldlab, the main goal of Logistics Community Brabant (LCB) and Breda University (BUAS) is to minimize points of contact between customers during large events, in a very, very delicate way (i.e., nudging). Crowd management has gained much attention during the COVID-19 pandemic.I was asked to conduct a literature review of human decision-making models. This information was used to develop interventions and experiments in the lab and in the field, nudging participants to behave in a more healthy and safe manner, e.g., how to safely and efficiently order beverages or exit a venue with the use of subtle environmental cues<br/

An open discussion on the interplay between leisure and love.

I had the honor of hosting a distinguished special track on the topic of "Leisure & Love" at the ATLAS 2024 conference, where I invited scholars to come together and share their research findings and innovative ideas in this intriguing area. At the end of the session, I presented key research questions that have been answered, as well as avenues worth exploring. It was well received, fostering engaging discussions and sparking new collaborative opportunities. I look forward to hosting similar sessions in the future

Five Minutes to Love

No full text
We are hosting a series of dating events in the Netherlands, United States, and China, designed to deepen our understanding of how romantic relationships begin. During each five-minute speed-dating interaction, the amount of self-disclosure is manipulated - from deeply personal to more general topics of conversation. After each interaction, participants complete a brief questionnaire while their skin conductance responses are closely monitored, a measure of physiological reaction that indicates emotional engagement

Measuring empathy within hotel employees

No full text
In today’s economy, tourists not only expect professional services but also seek positive emotional experiences when consuming tourism and leisure services. Thus, in recent years increasing attention has been paid to the role of empathy in the delivery of quality hospitality services; yet scant attention has been paid to actually measuring levels of empathy within employees. To meet this objective, using the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, employees’ predisposition to engage in empathic relations in delivery of their services were measured, using Iran as an emerging international tourism destination in the world. Results were vastly different from patterns in available normative empathy values. No Full Tex

The Procedural Meaning of moji-dori ('literally')

No full text
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the function of moji-dori ('literally') from a view of utterance interpretation. According to Momiyama (2014) and other studies, there can be several functions such as "drawing attention to the constituents of the modified elements", "interpreting them as literal meanings". There are two possible explanations for the function of moji-dori; one is to specify it as a polysemy, and the other is to interpret it as usages derived from a more general procedural meaning. For the purpose of this paper, the author would take the latter way and propose the procedural meaning of moji-dori as "forming a non-attributive metarepresentation of subsequent elements via para-linguistics information (i.e. orthographic form)", providing a relevance-theoretic account of the detailed process of interpreting the subsequent elements (Wilson and Sperber 1995, Wilson 2000)
