    Purification, Dispersion and Separation of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes

    In this thesis, the purification, dispersion and separation of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWNTs) are explored. The motivation for this work arose from the basic desire to understand and further develop the underlying chemistry of SWNTs, thus enabling the extraordinary properties of SWNTs to be used to their full potential. Achieving highly pure SWNT samples on which further chemistry can be undertaken is of critical importance; purification must be able to be performed in a reliable and repeatable manner. As such, a new method of SWNT purification was developed. This method introduced a new base washing step that removed a significant fraction of the impurities created during the standard acid reflux purification. This finding has implications for many existing reports on nanotube chemistry. Separation of SWNTs by their electronic properties is extremely important if SWNTs are to fulfil their potential in a wide range of applications, from optoelectronics to molecular sensing. In order to separate metallic and semiconducting SWNTs, two novel methods were developed, both of which are relatively cheap and easily scalable. First, SWNTs were reduced in liquid ammonia containing an alkali metal. The reduced tube salts were then spontaneously dissolved in dry solvents to form stable dispersions which were found to contain primarily metallic SWNTs; hence, separation was achieved. The second method investigated the separation of SWNTs reduced by electrochemical means. When a voltage was passed through a SWNT sample in a suitable electrolyte, SWNTs were reduced and therefore dissolved. These dissolved SWNTs were deposited as a thin carbon film, in which metallic SWNTs were found to preferentially present; once again, separation was achieved

Revered c^ordouv Crfti/tch I told those at church some time ago that Reese came up to me at lunch one Sunday and asked me how to get to heaven. I was kind of dumbstruck by the question, especially as Reese is not yet 4. I gave a suitably glib answer, but I continued to think about it and on the next Sunday I gave a slightly more • definitive answer. I have been thinking about the question on and off ever since. I suppose it takes on a slightly different sense of urgency at 72 than it does at age 4. All the songs and hymns that we sing Sunday by Sunday about heaven and the great reunions with those we have loved and have gone before us. But that doesn't answer the question of how we get to heaven. Last month, we had our usual Maundy Thursday dinner and went on to commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus and His disciples. At that time Jesus gave us His directions for eternal life. This is His summary of the great Commandments. "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." If we can do just these two things everything else will fall into place. What surer path to Heaven can there be? All the promises that we have received are awaiting their fulfillment. We will be reunited with those we have loved and lost. We will, with God's help, one day reach that eternal shore. Whatever age we are now, we are fortunate to have lived and grown up in such a time of medical advances that have assisted us in living this long. And we look forward to even greater advances that will offer longer and better lives to us. We must always remember that our time on earth is limited and we must do our part while we are here. But this life will surely end one day and we will die. The perishable cannot inherit the imperishable. That is how we get to heaven. The wild game feast was excellent and sponsored by the Nanton Club. The Club is reviewing its' restoration options for the Rumely tractor that was given to it for the community. The Milo Lions are reviewing their role in main­taining the Lions Playground. They are willing to help where needed but want to clarify their role with the Village of Milo. Lion Loren Mozill has turned on the sprinklers at the park. A work party will be doing some minor work at the East Cemetery. Pancake Breakfast plans are being reviewed for July 1st and the Community Campout is booked for the second weekend in July at Enchant. The organizing committee for the Milo Show'N Shine is busy making arrangements for the one day summer event. It coin­cides with the Milo Lions Barbecue on the second Sunday in August and has increased annual attendance substantially over the last four years. Sonny and Marina Vannatta 65th Wedding Anniversary Marina & (Norman) Sonny Vannatta On June 23rd Sonny and Marina Vannatta celebrated a truly impressive life milestone - their 65th wedding anniversary. Marina has created a beautiful painting of the old Milo Post Office, and will be donating the artwork to the Milo Library & Archives or Milo Community Hall. Marina & Sonny were married in Cluny by the United Church Minister Rev. Morrison on June 23, 1956. Sonny was working at the time on the road construction and they lived in a holiday trailer which they pulled to each construction site. Marina & Sonny stayed in the Milo area and worked for a farmer for a couple of years. Then they moved to Cluny to help Marina's Father Ben Reimche build the Cluny Hilltop Service Station and Cafe on Highway *1. They ran the Cafe and Sonny worked in the Garage with Ben. Marina remembers these as fun times with the Cluny/Glieichen people. By that time they had 3 children: Wanda, Larry and Vicky. After 5 years they decided to go back to farming and worked for Jack Sutherland for 12 years. Sonny ran the work crew and Marina cooked for hired help, grew a huge garden and milked 6 cows, sometimes running a tractor - very busy times with a young family. Sonny and Marina then went farming on their own, renting land from Rose Northcott and Marie Vinjie. They lived on Rose’s homestead 16 miles northeast of Milo, farming 3.5 sections of dryland with help from family at harvest time. Both Sonny and Marina operated the farm machinery and had a mixed farming operation with cows, horses, pigs, and chickens. They lived there for 31 years, enjoying, a fun and busy life with friends and neighbors. We will not be able to pay for those staying in other campsites. Commentary on Federal Bill C-10 by M.P. Martin Shields By now you may have heard about Bill C-10. It's the Bill that the Liberal Government says will ‘modernize’ the Broadcasting Act. What the Gov­ernment doesn't like to talk about are the implica­tions and powers that will be granted to the Canadi­an Radio-Television Commission, or the CRTC. When Bill C-10 inevitably becomes law thanks to Liberal, NDP, and Bloc Quebecois collusion, Cana­dians’ online content will be subject to moderation and enforced by the CRTC. The Liberals have maintained the ruse that Bill C- 10 is nothing more than a legal mandate to level the playing field between foreign big tech giants like Google and Facebook. That they pay their share in Canadian tax just as Canadian companies are subject to. However, Canadians are not con­vinced, nor will they be fooled. The costs will be passed down to the consumer and will not be transparent. By volume alone, Bill C-10 has been the issue I have received the most correspondence on. In the survey from my May e-newsletter (to which you should subscribe if you haven’t already!) a whop­ping 93% of respondents said that government should NOT regulate posts on social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Then comes the infamous 4.1 clause. The clause that protected Canadians’ content online was inex­plicably stricken from the bill by the aforementioned gang of three. This clause would have ensured that, no matter the provisions put into effect by the other clauses in C-10, the content (or ‘programs') that Canadians would post online would not be subject to CRTC regulation. With this clause re­moved, the CRTC will have the power to compel social media sites to remove/modify/replace online content posted by everyday Canadians at its sole behest. No explanation, no criteria, no guidelines. Just because the CRTC can. The Minister of Canadian Heritage has gone on record saying that the CRTC 'has no interest' in regulating individual Canadians' content. However, that argument doesn't stand up to scrutiny either. Despite the apparent disinterest in regulating con­tent, that doesn’t mean it’s not possible. This opens up a can of worms and the potential for a snowball­ing effect. Regulation of content will set a prece­dent defined by the unelected, unaccountable body of the CRTC which operates at arm

Christopher Pearce Cranch One can assume that somewhere back in time, the author is a relative of mine. Although from any reading of his life, he was not at all like me. When I was in Boston some years ago, I was at the cemetery that he is buried in, but I didn't know that at Hie time or I would have searched him out. In March, we do get those hints of spring, and can be certain that it is on its way, but probably won't arrive until April. But we do get the blessed assurance that spring is on the way. This year, Easter is late and so is Ash Wednesday. On March 6th, we will gather at the church to have our yearly reminder of the meaning of Lent pressed on to our foreheads. With a smudge of ash, we are reminded that all of life it transitory, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, in the words of the funeral sendee. Each Lent, we get 40 days to prepare us for the miracle of Easter, to prepare ourselves to receive that most precious gift, the gift of eternal life in Christ. In Lent, we are encouraged to give up any vices that we may have. We are also encouraged to devote some of our time to charitable works, or for some, perhaps it is easier and more practical to give a donation. We put away, until Holy Week, the Gloria and any alleluias from our Lenten services. Three things we might try this Lent are: - Daily prayer - our link to God. - Fasting - our link to ourselves. - Alms giving -^our link to our neighbours in need. This doesn't seem too tall an order for any of us. It is a chance to scale back our daily life, to consider the needs of others, the wealth that God has given to each of us, and the need to treat our bodies better. And, so I wish to all a meaningful Lenten season - until we arrive at the commemoration of Christ’s entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and the events of I Ioly Week which follow, culminating in the celebration of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. For anyone familiar with the Queenstown area reading the book will provide a nostalgic trip down memory lane and I highly recommend it. Although our family left Queenstown in 1955,1 still have many indelible memories etched in my mind. For instance, when I hear a meadowlark (they were everywhere), I think of Queenstown. When I drive by the community hall and look north I remember how Railway Avenue once bustled with activity and how elevator row loomed proud and tall. I also remember defending myself and the Kingsmith kids (or so it seemed at the time) from a threatening garter snake with one of Eddie's butcher knives. My parents in particular remained in contact with Queenstown and area residents for many decades and returned to the area quite often. It was as though they remained a part of the community even after being absent for so many years and so when I saw the pictures in Bill's book of the burning of many of the remaining Queenstown buildings in 1971 it was profoundly sad and brought back an emotional reminder of times gone by. I am thankful that Bill Lahd and other members of his family made the considerable effort to preserve Queenstown's history sharing the story of this once dynamic prairie hamlet with grateful readers. Cold weather kept attend­ance down but a good time was had by all. Milo Lions attended the Interclub in Blackie and the Charter Night in Strathmore. Proceeds from the District Birthday Calendar pro­ject for 2019 will go toward the Milo Hall Kitchen Renovation Fund. This will mean a further 2,500.00 going toward this project. Vice-District Governor Dustin Southgate attended the second Milo Lions meeting in February. Along with Lion Dustin was Zone Chair Darryl Rawleigh and Cabinet Secretary Anne Kennedy. Lion Dustin spoke about the Dreams Take Flight Foundation, a pro­ject that helps sick children enjoy a trip to Disneyland. He also awarded two Chevron Awards to Milo Lions Pe­ter Silbernagel, for 55 years of service, and Allan Bartsch for 30 years of service. UPCOMING EVENTS: The Enchant Campground has been booked for the Milo Community Campout on the nights of July 5th and 6th. This is an annual family fun weekend for our local camp­ing enthusiast, or just those looking for an excuse to use their RV. CW(^xM' November is the month for remembering. 2014 is a special anniversary year. In August, 1914, the world plunged in to the 'war to end all wars'. As we are all too aware, from our experiences of the past 100 years, it was really the start to most of the major conflicts of the 20th century. We don't need to rehash history and try to place blame. None of that will bring honour to a generation of young men who were killed, maimed or wounded on the battlefields of Europe 1914 -1918. In the carnage of the war, there are many examples of individual courage and compassion, countered by the inhumane ways devised to kill humanity. The use of mustard gas in warfare for the first time must rank as one of the most heinous of all time. 100,000 people died and 1,000,000 more were affected by the gassing. The gas did not restrict itself to soldiers, it killed anyone in its path. In the 4 year span of the war, the total casualties were 36 million (16 million died, 20 million wounded). So why on earth would we want remember such a horrible event in the history of the world? “Thosewho cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat That is why we must continue to remember, not only for Remembrance Day, when we pay tribute to those who, at the call of King & Country, laid down their lives for the peace and freedom that we enjoy today, but so that such a conflict may never again take place on earth ever again. "Only the dead have seen the end of war."2 For those millions of maimed and wounded that had to try to return to civilian life following the war's end, there was not even the inadequate assistance given to our present day veterans. Post traumatic stress disorder was not acknowledged, although shell shocked would have been the term used then. Soldiers bear the deepest wounds and scars of war."2 Anyone who took part in the fighting, in any capacity, and lived would have had emotion scars that would never heal. "War is hell. 4 And the Great War was possibly the most hellish of all wars. That is why we must remember it, so that never again should humanity be subject to such carnage. We have had a very busy month full of activities and learning opportunities. Fire Chief Byron Thompson and Vulcan County Fire Marshall Stuart Larson made a surprise visit to our school for Fire Prevention Week. They initiated the fire alarm and observed us as we made our way out of the school. The ele­mentary students watched a video and talked with Byron and Stuart about the importance of smoke detectors. Thanks to the Milo School Foundation we were able to have the Science in Motion program travel to our school. Our fantastic presenter Jen worked with the different grades doing hands on sci­ence experiments, we even had a mini-planetarium set up in the gym, the 7/8 class learned the science be­hind roller coasters, the grade 9 students made a pickle glow and the 1/2/3 class made ice cream with liquid ni­trogen.The Milo School Foundation also provided funding to have author David A. Poulsen bring his writing workshops to our school. The students really enjoyed the humorous way he shared his love for writing and the creative pro­cess. The volleyball team practiced and played games and fin­ished their season by hosting a one day volleyball tourna­ment. The tournament was a huge success with teams from Arrowwood, Champion, Brant, and Carmangay schools competing. Thanks to Mealane Deitz for organiz­ing the concession and to Leanne Bertschy for helping work the concession. The junior high held elections for student council and we are happy to see such an enthusiastic group take on the leadership of our student body. The student union is now starting the Mom’s Pantry Fundraiser, students will be coming around with order forms or they are available on our website as well. Miloschool.ca Our student council worked hard planning fun activities for our Halloween Celebration at the Milo School. Thanks to Barb and Ian Godkin for the donation of pumpkins for our students to carve into Jack-o’-lanterns. We are hopeful that driveway access will be corrected back to a normal state of affairs, that proper grades and drainage swales will be installed before drainage becomes a significant issue. The Village of Arrowwood can appreciate the frustration that this delay has caused and it has tried to work with residents to accommodate all access concerns that required an immediate solution. It appears that the Villages of Arrowwood and Milo have found a contractor to undertake some final infrastructure work for 2014. In Arrowwood, water and sewer services needs to be extended to the new Arrowwood Co-op development, along with some ditch grading and the installation of a new fire hydrant. In Milo, a water leak, a fire hydrant repair and some minor roadwork needs to be undertaken. As mentioned last month, the workshop “Finding Agreement” was hosted by Arrowwood and Milo and considered by all who attended to be highly worthwhile. Although designed for municipal officials, it is available for other community groups and organizations. The facilitator, Barbara McNeil, works for the Alberta Energy Regulator but has a longstanding relationship with Alberta Municipal Affairs. She has over twenty years experience as a mediator across a wide range of issues, including senior trainer in the University of Calgary’s Conflict Resolution Program, with experience as a member of the Municipal Government Board and Federal Farm Debt Review Board. Arrowwood and Milo were happy to have participants from both villages, Vulcan County, Town of Vulcan, Village of Carmangay, and diverse range of community associations. On October 2nd, the Village of Milo filed notice of appeal with Vulcan County and the Municipal Government Board (MGB) under section 690 of the Municipal Government Act. This appeal concerns a dispute with Vulcan County over a proposed residential subdivision development that it deems could have a detrimental impact on the village absent inter-municipal co-operation. As legislated, the MGB will open a hearing for this appeal within 60 days of notice being filed. The Dangers of Public WiFi: Important Do’s and Don’ts Restaurants and cafes are open for dine-in. Business travel is resuming. Remote workers are ready to stretch their legs and venture outside. Whether on a plane or seated al fresco, more people are working on the go again. And to get work done between boarding passes and breadsticks, they're connecting to public WiFi. But are they aware of the dangers of public WiFi? Is it safe for employees to use open WiFi? And if you do find yourself logging on to a new network, what can you do to secure your and your employer’s data while you work? Do use password-protected WiFi A secured WiFi connection that requires a password to use is safer than public, unsecured WiFi. It may be more convenient to connect to an open network instantly. But a private network hosted by a cafe or hotel eliminates the risk of a hacker offering free WiFi to lure in cyber victims. So, always check if there is a private WiFi network, and ask for the password. Don’t send sensitive data in cleartext Attackers can set up man-in-the-middle attacks or other methods of cyber espionage on public WiFi. To reduce risk, avoid handling or sending sensitive data whenever possible. That means steering clear of financial data, Pll (Personal Identifiable Information), credentials and passcodes, and any restricted or confidential information until you're back on a secured network. Do use a VPN A virtual private network, or VPN, allows you to establish a secure, protected connection to a corporate network. Even if you’re on public WiFi, the VPN provides an extra layer of security and makes it more difficult for cybercriminals to snoop. Many businesses have a VPN for employee use, but you can also download one yourself. With the amount of work and entertainment happening online, a VPN is now almost as basic as anti-virus protection. Don’t auto-connect to public WiFi Auto-connecting to WiFi can feel convenient. An instant connection wherever you go! But, it comes with hidden dangers, so turn off auto-connect for both WiFi and Bluetooth. Then, each time you’re in a new location, you can intentionally choose which network you want to use. Do connect with HTTPS HTTP and HTTPS are similar protocols that display web data on your device. (You can see what you are using by looking at the beginning text in the address box at the top of your Internet browser.) But, there’s one crucial difference: HTTPS (S for Secure) is a more secure, more advanced version. It keeps passwords private and is a safer connection so that other confidential information stays, well, confidential. So, when you are on public WiFi, check if the website you're using is HTTPS. If it isn't, wait until you’re back on a secured, private network before logging in or sending any data to that website. Do use a password manager and SSO (Single Secure Sign-on) Passwords are so mundane that we forget how critical they are to our online security. Unfortunately, public WiFi can expose us to attacks that allow cybercriminals to steal passwords. That's why it's essential to use a different password on every single website. A password manager simplifies the creation and management of strong passwords for all of your online accounts. Don’t neglect device security Security at the individual device level is essential, too. Keep software, in particular Internet browsers, and apps up-to-date. Updates have important security and bug fixes, so apply an update when one is available. Also, run anti malware software to spot malicious activity on your device. Don’t click links or open attachments from people you don’t know or seem out of character. Remember that links in apps like Facebook are not automatically safe - far from it in fact. And if you think you've spotted some unusual activity, investigate right away, and get help if you're not sure what you’re dealing with. With a few simple precautions, you can safely and conveniently work or entertain yourself while on the go, even when public WiFi is the only connection available. Get a password manager to start beefing up your password security and use our steps above to work safely from anywhere. Each year as I read and reread the Good Book, something new stands out or catches my attention. Recently I was reading the book of Haggai - not one of the major prophets of the Old Testament, but nevertheless, one which seems to speak to this age. See what you think: "Now therefore thus says the Lord of Hosts: Consider how you have fared? You have sown much, and harvested little; you eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and you that earn wages earn wages to put them into a bag with holes.” In the relevant words of that prophet of modern times, Dr. Phil, “And how is that working for you?” (You might take this a little more seriously if the preacher wasn't somewhere on a cruise ship at this very moment, so I guess I am not immune. Hopefully I do enough good in the community to take some time away and, without guilt, briefly live the good life.) Modern society is all too consumed with 'me' and 'things' and 'pleasures'. I think what the prophet is saying is, that: • Unless you are grounded in the larger reality of the world; • Realize how very fortunate is your fate, that you have been blessed by God; • That you work not just for yourself, but to ensure that the poor around you are fed, clothed, & maintained, and • Live every day with honest regard for your fellow man, ... there is no hope that the Lord of Hosts will look kindly on your life. He will indeed consider how you have fared on your earthly journey and decide whether you have done enough. When was it that I saw you hungry and fed you? Or thirsty and gave you drink? When did I see you as a stranger and took you in? Or naked and clothed you? When did I see you sick or in prison and visited you? Verily I say unto thee, inasmuch as thou hast done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, thou hast done it unto me. The Holy Family were themselves refugees, fleeing into Egypt to escape from another evil ruler, King Herod, so I believe that He would sympathize with the plight of the millions of refugees fleeing a conflict not of their making, trying to find sanctuary and a new life. Consider how you have fared. Consider how you can, in turn, show your gratitude by supporting those whose need is great. January has now come on gone, with bitter cold days and some almost like summerl Along with it we have been busy with ice skating, studying and preparing for exams and having awesome literacy activities! February is KINDNESS month - help us to spread love and joy at school by talking about kindness at home in different ways. Family Literacy Day was a hit on January 27th with guests from the fire department, the RCMP, the Vulcan Coalition of Early Childhood Development with Rainbow Literacy, community members and families. We had a fabulous visit with Tanya Elliott, an author from Brooks, Alberta. She is also a teacher, and spent time with the students inspiring them to use their imagination and pursue their dreams. Exam week was the last week of January. It was a great way to see where our students are doing well and where they are struggling. Remember that there are many factors that limit or contribute to success in a test: level of confidence, anxiety and the amount of sleep and food eaten, all play a role in addition to the student’s knowledge of the subject. As well, some students may be struggling with reading, expression of ideas, processing information and attention due to differences in their abilities and development. Everyone is on their own personal learning journey and it is our job (with you) to discover the various ways to realize everyone's potential. Tests are only one sample of many other aspects of student learning. In February information will be sent home to communicate with parents and guardians how the results were and areas requiring further growth for our school. We are looking forward to a few things in February! Not only is there the week off February 15-19, but also on February 22 there is a special dance performance, SAFIRE, which focuses on a message about confidence, leadership and bullying from the Canadian School Presenters. And... on February 23 we are going SKIIING to Castle Mountain! Oh Yeah! Finally in February there will be two surveys for you to complete. One will be for the school and the other is for the government, called the Accountability Pillar Survey. Completing both surveys is very important in order for us to learn your perspective about what we are doing well and what we could improve on. Please read below for more information. It started at Township Road 202 and burned north to the row of trees on the property. It was contained by the quick action of local farmers and Milo Fire Dept and standing wheat crops immediately south and west of this field were spared. Over 40,000 gallons of water was used on the blaze. Do I need more than one document? • No, only one document with your name and address is needed. * What if all of my documents have a post office box address? • That is ok. As long as it makes sense that a person in your voting subdivision or ward would have a post office box at your mailing address, it will be accepted.
