Link to publisher's homepage at http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/The optimum transmit power for an optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) system based on enhanced double weight (EDW) code is evaluated for various transmission distances considering the nonlinear stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effects. It has been observed through computer simulation that SBS causes backward scattering of transmit signal and this in turn causes a reduction of received power and limitation improvement for the bit error rate. It has been shown that the longer transmission distance have low Brillouin threshold power value and the power launched require must not excess the threshold power in order to overcome SBS effects. Also in this paper, we investigate and demonstrate how the attenuation coefficient and effective core area of optical fiber transmission influence the Brillouin threshold power in optical CDMA system

Optical waveguide coupler fabrication based on time variation ion-exchange technique

    Get PDF
Optical power transfer in a planar waveguide directional coupler is dependent on the geometry and refractive indices of the two waveguides. A method for fabricating optical directional couplers using ion-exchange Ag+/K+/Ca+ processes are presented, where the time of ion-exchange process is used to control the ratio of output power at the two output ports at a fixed temperature of 300 C. As far as the device geometry is still in single-mode regime, this method eliminates the need for high-resolution lithography for producing exact geometry of the device

    Non-symmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer wavelength filter

    Get PDF
A non-symmetrical Mach-Zehnder configuration with corrugated waveguide at one of its arm which acts as an interferometer is presented. The interference output intensity of the input light power depends on the operating wavelength, hence acting as a wavelength filter. The function of this wavelength filter is demonstrated by beam propagation method within range from 1000nm to 1800nm

SURVIVABILITY IN METRO RING NETWORK USING OXADM

The optical cross add and drop multiplexing (OXADM) node described in this paper increases the capacity, flexibility and reliability of the trunk-line optical network used for data communication. It features two different bandwidths which operate in working and protection line in a ring configuration. The OXADM has the same features of the conventional OADM node but with more efficiency and reliability. The OXADM prototype system focuses on providing survivability through restoration against failures, such as cable/fiber cut in optical layer with ring topology. Two types of restoration scheme have been proposed to ensure data flow continuously by means of linear/ multiplex protection and ring protection. Comparison between OXADM and OADM restoration schemes is also described. The BER characteristics were measured at 2.5 Gbps (OC-48) and small degradation was observed, as confirmed by a comparison of these simulation results with those obtained from systems without restoration element. Restoration schemes in OXADM node are more reliable and efficient compare to conventional device due to internally routing mechanisms and no ‘drop and re-add function’ is needed to route the signal to alternative path or processed the signals in both electronic and optical domain as practice in conventional nodes today
