Compensation structure of family business groups

    No full text
We examine executive compensation structures with a focus on family business groups in Korea. Our results show that Korean family business groups provide 60% more total compensation to CEOs who are family members than to professional CEOs. This excessive increment is not based on performance-contingent payments, but on fixed payments. Our propensity score matching and difference-in-differences analyses robustly support these results. Further, we find that operation of internal capital markets, CEO talents, CEO stock ownership, and family board membership do not explain the excessive compensation of family CEOs in family business groups. The evidence indicates rent extraction through executive compensation in family business groups.

Weaving Laser Vision System for Navigation of Mobile Robots in Pipeline Structures

A new laser vision system is proposed for the navigation of mobile robots in pipe environments. This paper mainly focuses on forward recognition of individual T-junctions and elbow pipes to prevent the robots from becoming stuck in pipes. We propose to mount weaving 2-D laser scanners on robots to obtain selective 3-D front-pipe maps. Recognition of T-junctions requires 3-D maps for pipe wall on wheel sides, whereas recognition of elbow pipes requires full-forward 3-D maps. From these selective forward 3-D maps, algorithms for recognition of T-junctions and elbow pipes were developed, utilizing the mathematical approach to describe the pipeline structures. The practicality of the proposed algorithms was validated for several pipe environments, including T-junction, single elbow pipe, and the latter pipe of double elbow pipes.11sciescopu

Molecular decoding of post traumatic stress disorder via time-resolved measurement of newly synthesized and existing RNA

    No full text
A variety of accidents can cause post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Experiences that cause extreme shocks cause not only cognitive distortion but also long-term biochemical, functional, and structural changes in the brain causing difficulties in major cognitive functions such as concentration, memory, and attention deficit. However, the understanding of molecular mechanisms at the cellular and biological level of cognitive dysfunction in PTSD is limited. Identifying the transcriptional signature after the fear conditioning will allow us to decode the molecular signatures associated with PTSD. We applied SLAMseq (thiol-linked alkylation for the metabolic sequencing of RNA) approaches for the time-resolved measurement of newly synthesized and existing RNA in neurons derived from human embryonic stem cells. We aim to decode molecular signature in genetic PTSD animal models at neural circuit- and single cell-level.1
