    Human planners, planning structure, and the vertical bullwhip

    In hierarchical production planning structures, decisions by planning entities at the various levels may lead to a planning bullwhip, for example, because of an inappropriate updating frequency of plans. In this planning bullwhip, poor estimates of the lead time and poor actual performance reinforce each other. We study the planning bullwhip in relation to the mitigating role that human planners may play, as the effect very often is originated and amplified by the use of decision support systems. We use the case study methodology. Our findings suggest that especially the planning structure plays a crucial role in enabling humans to mitigate the planning bullwhip

    Prevention of falls in the toilet environment

    Falls are a big concern that can influence the life and wellbeing of elderly people considerably. A research and design project was initiated to develop a solution to prevent falls in the toilet environment. This was done as part of the Friendly Rest Room (FRR) project, which focuses on designing better suiting (semi-)public toilet facilities for elderly people and the handicapped. Various investigations resulted in a set of recommendations for fall preventive measures in the toilet environment as a whole. The largest number of potential hazardous basic toilet actions is performed in the vicinity of the toilet bowl. The conceptual design developed next, offers the user support in that area in an innovative and appropriate way. The design consists of various components; together providing a fine-tuned allin- one support solution with an inviting appeal, representing luxury, serenity and hygiene. The next step to be taken is to perform usability tests with the design as a whole, to verify the ideas and design decisions that lead to the design. Several elementary aspects have been implemented in FRR prototypes. The results of usability tests with these functional FRR prototypes look affirmative and promising

    Vision-based methodology for collaborative management of qualitative criteria in design

    A Vision-based methodology is proposed as part of the management of qualitative criteria for design in early phases of the product development process for team based organisations. Focusing on abstract values and qualities for the product establishes a shared vision for the product amongst team members. Two anchor points are used for representing these values and qualities, the Value Mission and the Interaction Vision. Qualifying the meaning of these words trough triangulation of methods develops a shared mental model within the team. The composition of keywords within the Vision and Mission establishes a field of tension that summarises the abstract criteria and pinpoints the desired uniqueness of the product. The Interaction Vision allows the team members to design the behaviour of the product without deciding on physical features, thus focusing on the cognitive aspects of the product as a social actor in a context
