TOWARDS A SPATIAL DIMENSION OF SOCIAL RIGHTS. NEW PROSPECTIVES IN ARCHITECTURE AND LAW STUDIES

    No full text
Aim of this paper is to investigate places in the city - and buildings that shape it - where social rights embed in. The paper proposes to enhance the value of spatial dimension of rights in an innovative way for both constitutional law and architecture. Architecture in fact is the presupposition thanks to which human needs linked to social rights become tangible forms. The paper assumes that the full satisfaction of social rights doesn't depend only on the distribution of single state benefits, but on the social life that happens in places, buildings. Therefore social rights require the existence of social links - as family, school, working environment, social and personal life environment - in which and through which every people becomes a person and express his-self as a person. Acting an overturning of method the paper puts in evidence the link between social rights and space, but also intends to create a connection between the architectural dimension of spaces and the constitutional dimension of social rights until to arrive to tangible aspect of those rights in terms of physical space. The originality of this theme is the interdisciplinarity between both architecture and constitutional topic, and sociality as key to interpretation of rights theory and space morphology

Palliative sedation in patients with cancer

Background: Palliative sedation involves the use of sedative medication to relieve refractory symptoms in patients by reducing their level of consciousness. Although it is considered an acceptable clinical practice from most ethical points of view, palliative sedation is still a widely debated procedure and merits better understanding. Methods: The relevant medical literature pertaining to palliative sedation was analyzed and reviewed from various technical, relational, and bioethical perspectives. Results: Proportionate palliative sedation is considered to be the most clinically appropriate modality for performing palliative sedation. However, guidelines must be followed to ensure that it is performed correctly. Benzodiazepines represent the first therapeutic option and careful monitoring of dosages is essential to avoid oversedation or undersedation. Conclusions: Proportionate palliative sedation is used to manage and relieve refractory symptoms in patients with cancer during their last days or hours of life. Evidence suggests that its use has no detrimental effect on survival. A different decision-making process is used to manage the withdrawal of hydration than the process used to determine whether proportionate palliative sedation is appropriate. Communication between patients, their relatives, and the health care staff is important during this medical intervention

Fast growing integration among process and enterprise networks, the use of open IP-based network to connect control rooms with their RTUs, and the introduction of off-the-shelf hardware and software in the control systems, expose control networks to cyber risks as every other IT-system. The latter, with the dangerously increasing number of cyber threats (in particular ones related to cyber-crime or cyber-terrorism), impose to pay more and more attention to cyber-related risks and to consider also this type of events in the security plans of every control system, especially ones devoted to control and manage of national critical infrastructures.
