No full textMuch concern about the negative environmental consequences of agricultural development in Australia, including salinisation, waterlogging and algal blooms, has focused on the problems of the Murray–Darling Basin. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the environmental problems of the Murray–Darling Basin from an economic perspective, and a selective survey of the relevant economic literature, including theoretical analysis, modelling and contributions to the development of water policy. Complex Adaptive System Modelling of River Murray Salinity Policy Options
No full textThis paper reports on complex adaptive system (CAS) simulation of the River Murray Basin in Australia to compare capacity of institutional options to maintain functioning of key river system within a "bandwidth" that limits irreversible system state changes and highly adverse consequences. The modelling framework characterise diverse irrigation agents who profit from water diversion and cause external salinity impacts, water and salt process that form the link between irrigator actions and agricultural profits and external costs, and a river manager who sets institutional rules. Emphasis is on the CAS nature of the system and on institutional rules to accommodate choosing actions differently based on con dition of the system has been referred to as state contingent management (Wills, 2003) or threshold based management (Roe and Van Eeten, 2001). Key findings are that policy focus on the source of salinity by reducing drainage are much more cost effective than strategies to mitigate salinity once it occurs and that state contingent dilution provision when it has high benefit and low opportunity cost is also a cost effective way to manage salinity.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

Inheritance of Cotton Fiber Length and Strength
No full textThe U.S. cotton industry has become predominantly an export market which
requires a higher standard of fiber quality than does the domestic market. To remain
competitive, U.S. cotton must meet the quality standards demanded by the consumers of
raw cotton whether domestic or abroad. Diallel and generation means analyses (GMA)
were conducted on fiber quality data of nine and five parental genotypes, respectively, to
gain a better understanding of the genetic control of cotton fiber length and strength as
well as to ascertain the value of the reported genotypes toward the improvement of fiber
quality. Parental genotypes included extra-long staple uplands (Gossypium hirsutum, L.),
EMS mutated uplands, high strength uplands, and interspecific hybrids.
General combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were
estimated according to Griffing���s diallel Model I, Method 4 for lint percent, high volume
instrument (HVI) upper half mean length (UHML), fiber bundle strength (Str),
uniformity index, elongation, micronaire, advanced fiber information system (AFIS)
upper quartile length on a weight basis, mean length on a number basis, short fiber
content on a number basis, immature fiber content, maturity ratio, and standard fineness.
Estimates of GCA were significant across environments for all traits. SCA effects were
significant for most traits but accounted for a smaller proportion of the variability in
comparison to GCA effects. TAM B182-33 ELS would be the parent of choice to
simultaneously improve fiber length and Str.
The GMA was conducted on the parental, F_(1), F_(2), and backcross generations.
Low levels of transgressive segregation for both UHML and Str were observed for some populations. Broad sense heritability ranged from 0.00 to 0.67 for UHML and from 0.22 to 0.82 for Str. Additive gene action was significant for all but three parental combinations for UHML and for all parental combinations for Str. Generally, the significance and magnitude of additive genetic effects were more consistent among parental combinations and years than were non-additive genetic effects for both UHML and Str. Dominance and epistatic genetic effects often were of a greater magnitude than additive genetic effects but in an inconsistent manner, and in both positive and negative directions
Shadowgraphy of the end-effects regime produced by clustered rockets
No full textThe plume produced by a cluster of two high area-ratio thrust optimized parabolic contour nozzles is visualized by way of retroreflective shadowgraphy. Both steady and transient operations of the nozzles (start-up and shut-down) were conducted in the anechoic chamber and high speed flow facility at The University of Texas at Austin. Both nozzles exhibit free shock separated flow, restricted shock separated flow and an end-effects-regime prior to flowing full. Radon transforms of the shadowgraphy images are used to identify the locations in the flow where sound waves are being generated. During these off design operations of the nozzles, most sound waves are generated by turbulence interactions with the shock cells located in the supersonic annular plume. During the end-effects-regime, this supersonic annular plume is shown to flap violently, thus providing a first principals understanding of the sources of most intense loads during engine ignition

The project consists of developing a website, APIs, and a database to create documentation for SQL scripts and entities. The website should be able to upload scripts to the API, edit and catalog documentation, and make the documents searchable. The website should also be accessible only to USS employees to maintain data privacy. The API should be able to receive, parse, and generate a pre-filled document with information about the script that it has gathered. The API will then store this information in a database and upload the document back to the website so the user can view and edit the document as needed. The database should be able to store generated documents and uploaded scripts. The website shall be developed using Angular with TypeScript, HTML, and CSS. The API shall be developed using C#. The database shall be maintained using SQL
Pauli Murray: In & Out of the Pulpit
No full textThis keynote address was delivered on August 6, 2018 at Societas Homiletica at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina and explores the relationship between preaching and identity. The lecture introduces Pauli Murray, a local saint whose activism, writings, and ministry challenged the church and broader society. After a detailed introduction, I consider three principal influences on Pauli’s voice: Cornelia Smith Fitzgerald, Langston Hughes, and James H. Cone. Cornelia Smith Fitzgerald, Pauli’s maternal grandmother, provided a lens for thinking about the ethical and spatial contexts in which sermons arise. Langston Hughes, a fêted poet and author, offered literary inspiration and a model for moving among different genres. James Cone, a path-breaking scholar, gave Pauli vital theological footing and a framework for linking preaching, identity, and activism. Overall, I argue that Pauli Murray makes a singular contribution to the study of African American preaching
