No full textThe collection of works in Trapanese coral exhibited at the XXXI International Biennial of Antiques in Florence demonstrates show such production was characterized by a consistently high cultural level and refined artistic knowledge. Whereas from the 16th Century onwards the main players in this trend were sovereigns, nobles and high prelates, between the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th Century, antique dealers and wealthy private individuals became the main players, as they were attracted, like their predecessors, by the exquisite beauty of Trapanese coral artifacts, which still commands high prices in the art market. The article proposes a scientific study of the works in Trapani coral with sacred subjects exhibited in Florence, which constituted the main nucleus of the collection

No full textThe essay examines the main citations of decorative works of art found in the journals
of British travelers of the Grand Tour between XVIII and XIX century. In the context
of these works, the attention devoted to the decorative arts is much less than that
devoted to archeology, painting or sculpture, both because the culture of the time did
not consider them yet at the level of the so-called major arts, and because the authors
often have little competence in the field of the artistic context. The antiquarian authors
of travel reports, then, are clearly more interested in classical art than in that of later
or contemporary times. Therefore the citations of the works of decorative art in the
diaries of the Grand Tour are few in number and the collection of the main ones is
the result of a targeted research within a vast literature, which is often attentive to
aspects that have very little to do with these particular typologies. It is precisely the
literary dimension that makes the diaries so fascinating, together with their intrinsic,
undeniable historical value. The prose of the travelers, their style, which is influenced
from time to time by their education, their profession and their cultural heritage, offers
the reader a narrative space in which uses, customs, works of art, monuments, the
entire social and cultural panorama of the period coexist. The end result is a series of
descriptions sometimes synthetic and stringent, sometimes vivid and even lyrical, but
full of suggestiveness and poetry

No full textThe attention that is dedicated to the Decorative Arts in the travelers' diaries is much inferior in comparison to that one turned to the archaeology, to the painting or to the sculpture. As far as jewelry is concerned, in particular, the growing admiration for the craftsman's mastery was flanked by the traditional consideration of its splendor as a status symbol and the ancestral conception of precious stones as bearers of particular magical or apotropaic powers. It is, however, natural that the quotations of jewels in the diaries of the Grand Tour are in small numbers compared, for example, to those relating to archaeological ruins, and their collection is the result of targeted research within a vast literature, as mentioned above, often attentive to aspects that have very little to do with these particular artifacts
