SEPP: a New Compact Three-Level Logic Form

    No full text
Compact area, low delay, and fast synthesis time are important issues in logic circuit design. In order to orchestrate these main goals, this paper proposes a new algebraic three- level expression called sum of extended pseudoproducts (SEPP) with low delay and compact area. These forms are an extension of sum of pseudoproduct (SPP) three-level expressions. The paper proposes an efficient heuristic algorithm that gives compact solutions in a reduced synthesis time. A wide set of experimental results confirms that SEPP forms are often more compact than SPP forms, and their synthesis is always a fast reoptimization phase after SPP minimization

Making a Soft Elastic Pulsation Pump (SEPP)

In this work, a soft-elastic pulsation pump (SEPP) has been made and investigated. Here, 3D printing was used to make casting molds and a melt-removal method using wax was employed. The SEPP was made of silicone rubber and driven by an external squeezing mechanism. A silicone one-way valve was also made which prevented backflow after the fluid was squeezed out of the pump chamber. The material characteristics of the SEPP including durability were examined. The pump operating parameters were confirmed to differential pressure of 100 mm Hg in a close flow loop. The average flow rate was 2 L/min, while yielding a peak flow of 8 L/min, and a stroke volume of 70 mL. A preliminary trial using fresh animal blood had shown that the SEPP has good protection on the blood. Therefore, within the resources available, an interesting idea for an effective SEPP has been proposed and realized in the laboratory. The technical details of the SEPP described, and the experimental results reported here form a good basis for making higher capacity SEPPs. This effort may help make its way to an effective ventricular assist device

Kaplan-Meier estimates of cancer-specific survival in RCC patients according to SePP serum concentrations.

<p>RCC patients (n = 41) were categorized into relatively high, moderate or low Se status by calculating tertiles of serum SePP as a reliable circulating biomarker (highest tertile: [SePP] >2.7 mg/l; middle tertile: [SePP] = 2.4–2.7 mg/l; bottom tertile: [SePP] <2.4 mg/l). Low Se status as reflected by serum SePP concentrations in the bottom tertile at time of diagnosis is associated with poor survival odds.</p

The History and Sustainability of the CBA in Estonia

Estonia has had a currency board arrangement (CBA) for more than 10 years. Due to the successful performance of the Estonian economy under a CBA the current position of the Bank of Estonia is to maintain its exchange rate regime until full participation in the EMU, inter alia, during Estonia’s participation in ERM 2. Therefore, it is necessary to analyse the reasons for maintaining the CBA in the past and whether it is a viable option in the future. The main aim of this paper is therefore to give an overview of the history of the Estonian CBA and examine the different aspects of its sustainability. In section 2 the article describes the basic features of the CBA in general and the Estonian CBA in particular and discusses the rationale for the choice of a CBA in Estonia. The third section of the article describes the main developments of the Estonian economy during the last 10 years. Both financial sector and real sector developments are briefly discussed. In the fourth section, we assess the sustainability of the Estonian CBA. We specifically analyze whether the preconditions for the successful performance of the CBA are in place. First, we examine the fiscal policy stance after the introduction of the currency board with special emphasis upon the period strongly influenced by external shocks (1997–1999). Secondly, we discuss the flexibility of the real sector of the economy. For this purpose the flexibility of wage setting, movements in the real exchange rate and changes in foreign trade are discussed. Thirdly, we analyse the resilience of the banking sector by looking at its performance during the external shocks experienced during the Asian and Russian crises. The article concludes that the Estonian economy fulfils the main economic preconditions for the sustainability of the CBA – sufficient fiscal discipline, flexibility of the real sector and resilience of the financial sector. Therefore, the CBA could be considered a suitable exchange rate arrangement before Estonia’s entry to the third stage of the EMU.Estonia; Currency Board

Subjective perception of cocaine reward in mice assessed by a single exposure place preference (sePP) paradigm

Background The potential of abused drugs to induce addiction and compulsive drug-related behavior is associated with their ability to alter dopamine signaling. Dopamine plays a key role in reward signaling and it has been of great interest to investigate how various drugs of abuse alter reward-related behavior. Comparison with existing methods In rodents, the rewarding effects of drugs have often been assessed in self-administration or place preference paradigms; both involving repeated drug exposure and weeks of training and testing. New method Our investigation describes a valid approach to assess the initial rewarding effects of cocaine in mice with a single exposure place preference (sePP) paradigm, avoiding repeated drug injections. Results We present the sePP paradigm with a 3-day protocol to assess the initial rewarding effects of cocaine. Interestingly, only male mice exhibit sePP to cocaine. To assess subsequent drug-related behavior, the protocol was extended by 3 days of extinction followed by reinstatement on day 10. Conclusion The sePP paradigm provides a reliable and convenient approach to assess the initial rewarding effects of cocaine, circumventing the need for repeated drug injections. The sePP protocol allows further dissection of the mechanism and influence of initial cocaine exposure on subsequent drug-related behaviors by including extinction and reinstatement. The lack of sePP in female mice may reflect a biologically relevant sex difference in the initial subjective perception of cocaine-induced reward. This could relate to and explain why males and females have been reported to respond differently to cocaine and cocaine-associated cues.</p

IT-OSRA: applying ensemble simulations to estimate the oil spill risk associated to operational and accidental oil spills

    No full text
Oil Spill Risk Assessments (OSRAs) are widely employed to support decision making regarding oil spill risks. This article adapts the ISO-compliant OSRA framework developed by Sepp Neves et al. (J Environ Manag 159:158–168, 2015) to estimate risks in a complex scenario where uncertainties related to the meteo-oceanographic conditions, where and how a spill could happen exist and the risk computation methodology is not yet well established (ensemble oil spill modeling). The improved method was applied to the Algarve coast, Portugal. Over 50,000 simulations were performed in 2 ensemble experiments to estimate the risks due to operational and accidental spill scenarios associated with maritime traffic. The level of risk was found to be important for both types of scenarios, with significant seasonal variations due to the the currents and waves variability. Higher frequency variability in the meteo-oceanographic variables were also found to contribute to the level of risk. The ensemble results show that the distribution of oil concentrations found on the coast is not Gaussian, opening up new fields of research on how to deal with oil spill risks and related uncertaintie
