    Geochemistry and tectonic significance of the Fannuj-Maskutan SSZ-type ophiolite (Inner Makran, SE Iran)

    The nature and geodynamic setting of Inner Makran ophiolites (SE Iran) are controversial and are the focus of a growing debate. The Fannuj-Maskutan ophiolite complex (central Inner Makran) is made up of lherzolites, harzburgites, layered and isotropic gabbros and diabase dikes and basaltic lavas. Here we present new textural description, mineral and whole-rock chemistry of peridotites together with bulk geochemistry of magmatic mafic rocks and U-Pb geochronology and Lu-Hf isotopes of inherited zircons in gabbros, with the aim to reconstruct the petrogenesis of the Fannuj-Maskutan ophiolite. The results indicate to a subduction-metasomatized depleted mantle source experienced 10–20% of partial melting. A transition from IAT-gabbros to E-MORB-basalts is also outlined. We interpret the obtained results as evidence for the Fannuj-Maskutan genesis in a supra-subduction zone (SSZ) basin developed in the Iranian cadomian crust as indicated by the presence of inherited Cadomian zircons (ca. 515 Ma, εHf(t): −13.6–+11.2). Comparing the Fannuj-Maskutan ophiolites to well-known SSZ-systems such as the South Sandwich SSZ, and integrating with the existing literature on Inner Makran ophiolite belt we interpret the Fannuj-Maskutan ophiolite as a part of a major SSZ-basin opened in the Iranian cadomian crust and evolved during the Neotethys subduction under Central Iran

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Geochronology, geochemistry and petrology of the oligocene magmatism in SE segment of the UDMB, Iran

    Despite diverse geochronological-geochemical studies on Cenozoic igneous rocks from the SE segment of the Urumieh-Dokhtar Magmatic Belt (UDMB) of Iran, the nature of the Oligocene magmatic rocks from the farthermost end of the SE segment- where it is linked to the Makran magmatic belt- has been ignored due to the difficulty of access. In this study, we focus on syn-collisional mafic to felsic igneous rocks of calc-alkaline and high-K calc-alkaline affinities from the SE segment of the Urumieh-Dokhtar Magmatic Belt (UDMB) near Nagisun, south of Bam. The Nagisun rocks have low Sr/Y and La(n)/Yb(n), similar to igneous rocks from typical arcs. Zircon U–Pb ages show comparable ages for plutonic (~ 34–25 Ma) and volcanic (~34–27 Ma) rocks. The εHf(t) values for zircons from plutonic rocks range from −0.3 to +12.8, whereas the εHf(t) values for the volcanic rocks vary from −2.6 to +13. Modelling of trace elements compositions using Nagisan basaltic samples indicate that an 87:2:11 mixture of the depleted MORB mantle, subducting (trench)-sediments and altered oceanic crust with 5% aggregated fractional melting closely matches the trace-element abundances of the Nagisun basaltic rocks. Indeed, the modelling of Sr and Nd isotopic data emphasizes that the Nagisun magmatic rocks could be products of bulk mixing between a depleted MORB mantle and/or a mixed, fertilized mantle with the Cadomian lower and upper continental crust. Furthermore, our compiled data display that the magmatism in the SE segment of the UDMB changed through time from normal calc-alkaline magmatism to adakitic magmatism at ~20 Ma, after the collision with Arabia began ca 27 Ma

It was established specifically for urban Jewish garment workers, many of whom had emigrated from Europe. President John F. Kennedy sent a telegram to the citizens of Roosevelt, New Jersey, apologizing for not being able to attend the memorial dedication in honor of former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. (Jersey Homesteads became Roosevelt in 1945 in honor of the president.) President Kennedy expressed his gratitude to the people of Roosevelt for constructing the memorial, and commented that it will serve as a constant reminder of Roosevelt's good works

    We report experimental results for the temperature variance 2(z) and the corresponding frequency spectra P(f) in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratioT= D/L = 1:00 (D = 1:12 m is the diameter and L = 1:12 m the height). The measurements were conducted in the Rayleigh-number range 1011 < Ra < 1:35 1014 and Pr ' 0:8. For Ra = 1:35x1014, 2(z) could be described well by a logarithmic dependence on the vertical position z in a range of z 1 < z < z 2 with z 1 ' 70 and z 2 = 0:1L. Here L=(2Nu) is the thickness of a thin thermal sublayer adjacent to the horizontal plate where the heat flux (denoted by the Nusselt number Nu) is carried mostly by thermal diffusion. In the log layer, we found that the temperature spectra had a significant frequency range over which P(f) f with close to 1. As Ra decreased, increased so that the log layer became thinner. At Ra = 2:05 1011, z 2 < z 1 and therefore there was no range for a log layer. Correspondingly, the temperature spectrum near the horizontal plate did not have the f1 scaling form either

    The authors conducted an author cocitation analysis on prominent authors writing about the Olympics during the 1990s. Author cocitation is an established bibliometric technique that can be used to measure the relative similarities of topics written about by the cited authors. This enables a visual representation of the “intellectual space” of the discipline, in this case the Olympics, to be created for the period under review. So core and peripheral research areas are identified, along with their major contributors. The representation appears as a two-dimensional cluster-enhanced map. Subject expertise was then applied to the results to place labels on the generated clusters of authors and their topics

    Mineral geochemistry of the Sangan skarn deposit, NE Iran: Implication for the evolution of hydrothermal fluid

    The Sangan iron skarn deposit is located in the Sabzevar-Dorouneh Magmatic Belt of northeastern Iran. The skarn contains zoned garnet, clinopyroxene and magnetite. Cores and rims of zoned garnets are generally homogeneous, having a relatively high ΣREE, low ΣLREE/ΣHREE ratios, and positive Eu anomalies. The cores of the zoned clinopyroxenes are exceptionally HREE-rich, with relatively high ΣREE and HREE/LREE ratios, as well as positive Eu anomalies. Clinopyroxene rims are LREE-rich, with relatively low ΣREE contents and HREE/LREE ratios, and do not have Eu anomalies. Magnetite grains are enriched in LREEs in comparison with the HREEs and lack Eu anomalies. Variations of fluid composition and physicochemical conditions rather than YAG-type substitution mechanism are considered to have major control on incorporating trace elements, including REE, into the skarn mineral assemblage. Based on baro-acoustic decrepitation analysis, the calc-silicate and magnetite dominant stages were formed at similar temperatures, around 350–400 °C. In the Sangan skarns, hydrothermal fluids shifted from near-neutral pH, reduced conditions with relatively high ΣREE, low LREE/HREE ratios, and U-rich characteristics towards acidic, oxidized conditions with relatively low ΣREE, high LREE/HREE ratios, and U-poor characteristics.Fatemeh Sepidbar, Hassan Mirnejad, Jian-Wei Li, Chunjing Wei, Luke L.
