Rise and fall of a vegan food producer. What role for ethical values?
The idea of veganism was established in 1944 and is about following a plant-based diet that does not include
eggs, dairy, or any other animal-derived substances. The popularity of the "vegan lifestyle" has grown
considerably in recent years. This allowed for large retailers and small makers of vegan goods to work
together. We look at a small business owner who adopted a vegan lifestyle out of an ethical conviction.
Initially running a small venture, he attempted to expand to bigger markets but failed to do so. Our aim is to
analyse the reasons for this failure, with a focus on the role of ethical values. The impact of ethical principles
on business growth and the potential constraints to business expansion are addressed. In so doing, our
research contributes to the scarce literature on sustainable business failure by examining the influence of an
entrepreneur's values on his or her decision-making. Our study revealed that entrepreneurs face not only
ethical but also cognitive challenges. At times, their moral beliefs may hinder their understanding of the
needs of a market outside their own community
How do fathers influence daughters’ identity as family business leaders in the post-succession phase?
Less is More. Entrepreneurship as a choice for a sustainable career
Abstract
Objectives: This paper presents a research proposal that aims to answer the following research questions: RQ1)
Why do some immigrant entrepreneurs decide to engage in entrepreneurship as a sustainable career and start a
sustainable business? RQ2) How do these immigrant entrepreneurs build their sustainable careers in this
context? RQ3) Which effects result – at the individual level – from their decision? To answer this RQ, we adopt
the sustainable careers theory to analyse the experience of people who decided to leave their home country and
their previous careers in private or public organisations to engage in entrepreneurship and create a sustainable
business.
Prior Work: The literature on immigrant entrepreneurs has mainly focused on individuals who are forced to
migrate and investigated the factors that may favour or hinder their entrepreneurial identity, path and success.
Some researchers call for further research on the quality of life of immigrant entrepreneurs and point out the
necessity to explore whether and how the initial reasons for migration interact with aspects such as individuals’
well-being, work-life balance and satisfaction.
Approach: This study adopts a qualitative approach based on an interpretive approach by using the life story
interview method and narrative analysis. To date, four interviews have been conducted with an immigrant
entrepreneur who founded and manages ‘a house’ for sustainable tourism, in which she also organises various
activities to spread social and environmental sustainability values.
Results: The analysis of the first interviews indicates that some immigrant entrepreneurs are increasingly
motivated by sustainability at both personal and business levels. They may choose to change careers and
relocate to align more closely with their values and aspirations for a sustainable lifestyle. This often involves
leaving established, lucrative positions to pursue projects that promote personal well-being and job satisfaction
while embodying their sustainability values.
Implications and Value: The primary contribution of this study lies in uncovering an overlooked topic within both
migrant entrepreneurship literature and sustainable careers research. We aim to advance these two areas of
scholarship. Firstly, we seek to examine a new dimension of migrant entrepreneurship by proposing that pursuing
a sustainable career can be a key motivator for establishing a business in a foreign country while also analysing
the factors that influence decision-making career development and its outcomes. Secondly, we adopt the theory
of sustainable careers, a framework typically used to study employees in organisations, into the realm of
entrepreneurship
Industry 4.0 and Intellectual Capital: a state of the art
This paper aims to analyse the relationship between Industry 4.0 and Intellectual Capital (IC) in the existing literature to verify the state of the art. A Structured Literature Review (SLR) is useful to verify a state of the art, point out insights and critiques, highlight research gaps and develop future research agendas and questions. We have conducted a keyword search using journal databases like Scopus, Web of Sciences and Google Scholar. The preliminary results show significant attention by academics on the effects of Industry 4.0 on human capital (human resources). The selected studies are principally about the competencies of human capital 4.0, education, development, the readiness of the labour market, the social effects of change and adaptive management systems. The link between Industry 4.0 and the relational or structural capital is almost entirely unexplored. The review is limited by the databases accessed, the search criteria, method of searching, inclusion and exclusion criteria. There is no SLR about the relationship between Industry 4.0 and Intellectual Capital. Thus, the paper contributes to the literature by describing all that has been studied and by highlighting the topics, critiques, future research agendas and questions. Our goal is to contribute to advancing the knowledge on Industry 4.0 and its impact on IC
Women in Family Firms: A Structured Literature Review
This paper presents a literature review on women in family firms with the aim to answer the following research questions: 1) What is the evolutionary trend of the field? 2) What's new in the (very) recent debate on women in family firms? Based on a structured literature review (SLR) method, we analysed a set of studies published over the last 17 and a half years (2000-2017, June 30) selected from the SCOPUS databases. Results confirmed the growing interest in this topic, highlighting a positive trend of the field of research. Secondly, our findings show a relevant and growing contribution from European researchers. Third, the analysis has allowed us to identify emerging and/or crucial research topics (women in family businesses, succession, women-owned family business and female entrepreneurship, copreneurial ventures) and offer suggestions for future research
Does Gender Matter in Strategies Adopted to Face the Economic Crisis? A Comparison Between Men and Women Entrepreneurs
The purpose of this paper is to understand how Italian micro-entrepreneurs responded
to the economic crisis and strategies they adopted to deal with it. A comparison between
male and female entrepreneurs is presented, in order to understand if they adopted
similar or different strategies. The paper also aims to understand if variables, other
than gender, influenced strategies adopted to face the economic crisis. Drawing from
a telephone questionnaire survey involving a sample of 300 (150 male and 150 female)
owners of Italian micro-enterprises, located in Marche Region, findings suggest that
entrepreneurs mostly dealt with the crisis through a defensive approach (restructuring
and resizing strategies). Compared to men, female entrepreneurs had a lower propensity
towards offensive strategies (innovation, development and growth). Differences in the
approach towards the crisis were also identified with respect to company’s age, industry
and impact of the crisis. These findings contribute to the debate on gender-based
differences in behaviors, attitudes and preferences. Moreover, they can help to identify
economic policy measures useful to help men and women entrepreneurs to address the
crisis. Policy-makers who want to support female entrepreneurship should consider
these aspects, in order to identify tools and policies that can help female firms to resist
the crisis more effectively in the short-term and to seize new market opportunities in the
recovery phase. The sample is restricted to sole proprietors and to a limited geographical
context. So further analysis should involve companies of different sizes and located in
different geographical contexts, both in Italy and abroad
