Development and evaluation of a sustainable solar cooker for operations in Uganda
Purpose of the Study: The research focused on developing and evaluating a solar cooker as a
sustainable energy solution to address the cooking needs in Africa, using Uganda as a case
study.
Statement of the Problem: While solar energy technologies have the potential to enhance
energy sustainability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, current solar cookers face
limitations in addressing local cooking habits, energy demands, and geographical conditions in
Uganda.
Methodology: The research established energy requirements for cooking based on common
food types, average household size, and average solar irradiation in Uganda. A solar box cooker
was designed and modeled using SOLIDWORKS software. Material selection and cost
analysis were conducted for economic feasibility, and the optical and thermal performance was
analyzed using COMSOL Multi-Physics software. A prototype was constructed using locally
available materials to assess manufacturability and cost implications.
Results: A box-type solar cooker was developed with inner reflector walls at an optimal angle
and internal insulation for better heat retention and efficiency. The cooker, with an aperture
area of 0.1897 m², meets the thermal requirements for cooking common foods in major regions
of Uganda. All materials used are locally available, making the cooker appropriate, sustainable,
and affordable.
Conclusion: The proposed solar cooker offers a viable alternative to traditional cooking
methods in Uganda. It effectively cooks common foods, is cost-effective, and provides
environmental benefits, reducing reliance on charcoal
“O MONTE DAS ALMAS”, UM CONTO FANTÁSTICO TRADUZIDO DE GUSTAVO ADOLFO BÉCQUER
We present the full translation of the short story “O Monte das Almas”, by the Spanish poet and romantic writer Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836-1870). Originally published in 1861, and subsequently included in the book Leyendas, the narrative is one of the author’s most commented and translated. In it, Bécquer reveals his ability to lead the reader from the real to the fantastic by means of the evocation of a historical detail and a real place, the story told, though literary, and therefore fictional, is the most likely to offer the probability of been based on a local tradition, derived from the Spanish city of Soria, where the narrative is set. “O Monte das Almas” is one of the most significant examples of the fantastic Spanish literature of the nineteenth century.Apresenta-se a tradução integral do conto “O Monte das Almas”, do poeta e escritor romântico espanhol Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836-1870). Publicada originalmente em 1861, e incluída posteriormente no livro Leyendas, a narrativa é uma das mais comentadas e traduzidas do autor. La metodología empleada en la presente etnografía —realizada como parte de una tesis de maestría en estudios de la cultura— consistió en la recopilación de testimonios de tales personajes, de los habitantes de las localidades y la documentación audiovisual registrada. Aunque los animeros se definen a sí mismos como “servidores de almas”, es factible pensar en ellos como una autoridad espiritual en torno a la devoción a las almas, pues en la práctica guían procesiones, rezos y cánticos para los muertos sin la intervención de un religioso.This research aims to describe the animeros in the rural communities of Guanando and La Providencia (Chimborazo, Ecuador), their practice and their role in mediation between the living and the dead. The methodology used in this ethnographic research—which is part of a master’s thesis in Cultural Studies—was to compile testimonies from these men and the inhabitants of the localities, as well as audiovisual documentation of the practice. Although animeros define themselves as “servants” of souls, it is possible to think of them as spiritual authorities operating around the devotion to souls, because they lead processions and prayers for the dead, without the intervention of a priest.</p

hives. Propolis has a strong historical background. It has been used in different cultures and civilizations. Propolis has antibacterial,
anti-viral and anti-fungal effects. Its anti-cancer effect has also been observed. Propolis has also been used in dentistry
for surgical wound healing, rool canal treatment, pulp capping and tooth hypersensitivity. Different commercial propoiis products
are available in market. Propolis has a promising role in future medicine. Further research is needed in its application in clinical
