Characteristics of Anupam Sud's art
No full textAnupam Sud is considered as one of the greatest contemporary artists in India. The author makes polish readers more familiar with this artist. We focused on Sud's main works – graphics, paintings and even a sculpture. The article contains discussion about one of Sud’s most widely used motifs– a woman in search of shakti. Moreover, it covers issues of human depravity, one’s contempt for another, and primarily it points out main problem being faced by Hindu women in a patriarchal society. We draw attention to the most characteristic features of Anupam Sud’s work – artwork as manifested (by which Sud tries to draw attention to the Hindu woman’s situation), chiaroscuro and anatomy.Anupam Sud jest zaliczana do grona najwybitniejszych współczesnych artystów w Indiach. Autorka w swoim tekście przybliża postać mało znaną polskiemu czytelnikowi. Omawia główne jej dzieła – graficzne, malarskie i jedną rzeźbiarską. Snuje rozważania na temat jednego z popularnych typów przedstawień kobiecych, chętnie ukazywanego przez artystkę – kobiety, która poszukuje śakti. Ponadto porusza problem zepsucia człowieka, gardzenia drugim, a przede wszystkim wskazuje na problemy, jakie towarzyszą Induskom w patriarchalnym społeczeństwie. A parameter back-calculation technique for pavements under moving loads
No full textMaintenance and rehabilitation strategies of pavements are usually made based on the results of performance evaluation. An efficient tool for pavement structural evaluation at network level is the traffic speed deflectometer (TSD) test. In order to deal with TSD measurements, this paper proposes a parameter back-calculation technique. Firstly, the sensitivity of the surface response for an elastic pavement structure with hysteretic damping to different structural parameters is investigated. Then, the ability of the parameter backcalculation technique is verified by conducting a case study. The results show that the proposed technique is able to back-calculate the structural parameters of pavements by analysing TSD measurements. No full textSamar Sen (1916-1987) is an exceptional artist in the history of Bengali poetry. He is a poet of Marxist literature and civic middleclass life. His opinion on this matter is very simple and frank - \u27My barrier was limited to the middleclass, I could not overcome that barrier.
His support for Marxian philosophy is not expressed in slogans in poetry. In keeping with the personal art truth, he captured the restlessness of morning in poetry. Images of opportunism and middleclass luxury are prominent in his poems.
In this article we will try to explore and analyze how \u27darkness\u27 is repeatedly used in Samar Sen\u27s poetry. At the same time, an attempt will be made to draw an outline of how the darkness depicted by the poet has carried various meanings and symbolic significance.
Poetry is an art based on words. This word captures the feeling of the poet\u27s deep consciousness and builds a path to unite with the reader\u27s feelings and emotions. The words used in poetry often express the meaning according to the poet\u27s wishes. The poet shakes off the conventional meaning of the word and gives it a different meaning. Just as a poet is more interested in a particular theme or genre, some words are used again and again and become representative of the poet\u27s mood. In Samar Sen\u27s five poems ‘Kayekti Kavita’ (1937), ‘Grahan’ (1940), ‘Nanakatha’ (1942), ‘Kholachithi’ (1943), ‘Tin Purush’ (1944) he explores darkness in the diversity and individuality of artistic creation. One has given another dimension. He has tried to channelize the darkness in favor of the vivacious \u27Whale Destroyer\u27. A generic domain specific language for financial contracts
No full textFinancial contracts require management, such as valuation, scheduling and generating legal documents. The current approach for managing financial contracts is inefficient, for lack of a universal language for representing contracts. Peyton Jones et al.'s proposed such a language, even though contracts are diverse and new ones are introduced often. We verify that Peyton Jones et al.'s language is expressive enough by using it to represent two new contracts: credit default swap and power reverse dual currency swap. We demonstrate its advantage by using the same

Hierarchical modeling of fractures for naturally fractured reservoirs
Get PDFtextDiscrete Fracture Networks (DFN) models have long been used to represent heterogeneity associated with fracture networks but all previous approaches have been either in 2D (assuming vertical fractures) or for simple models within a small domain. Realistic representation of DFN on field scale models have been impossible due to two reasons - first because the representation of extremely large number of fractures requires significant computational capability and second, because of the inability to represent fractures on a simulation grid, due to extreme aspect ratio between fracture length and aperture.
This thesis presents a hierarchal approach for fracture modeling and a novel random walker simulation to upscale the fracture permeability. The modeling approach entails developing effective flow characteristics of discrete fractures at micro and macrofracture scales without explicitly representing the fractures on a grid. Separate models were made for micro scale and macro scale fracture distribution with inputs from the seismic data and field observations. A random walker simulation is used that moves walkers along implicit fractures honoring the intersection characteristics of the fracture network. The random walker simulation results are then calibrated against high-resolution flow simulation for some simple fracture representations. The calibration enables us to get an equivalent permeability for a complex fracture network knowing the statistics of the random walkers. These permeabilities are then used as base matrix permeabilities for random walker simulation of flow characteristics of the macro fractures. These are again validated with the simulator to get equivalent upscaled permeability. Several superimposed realizations of micro and macrofracture networks enable us to capture the uncertainty in the network and corresponding uncertainty in permeability field. The advantage of this methodology is that the upscaling process is extremely fast and works on the actual fractures with realistic apertures and yields both the effective permeability of the network as well as the matrix-fracture transfer characteristics.Petroleum and Geosystems Engineerin

No full textThis thesis is a theoretical and empirical analysis of the state and its relationship to the evolution of the social economy. The study is based on a concrete examination of a particular social formation, namely that of India. The thesis argues that the state in India, because of the nature of the mode of production, has been able to play an autonomous role vis-a-vis the social classes. This contention is contrary to the traditional Marxist class theory of the state which maintains the state is always a means of class hegemony, except in transitional social formations. It has also been argued that once the state attains a definite form, it reacts on the evolution of a social formation and, in turn, is determined by its changing nature. On the basis of a concrete study of the evolution of the social formation of India, it is shown that the autonomy of the state which resulted from the Asiatic mode of production obstructed India's transition to capitalism, and thus undermined its economic development and led to colonisation. It is then explained how continuation of the state's autonomy vis-a-vis the indigenous social classes during the colonial period resulted from a social formation which was partIy Asiatic partly feudaI and partly capitalist, as well as from the colonial state's subservience to the metropolitan bourgeoisie. This conjuncture enabled the state to make considerable resource bourgeoisie. This conjuncture enabled the state to make considerable resource transfers from India to the metropolitan centres, thus leading to India's underdevelopment and low labour productivity. The subsequent attempt on the part of the post-independent state in India to maintain its autonomy, which is derived from much the same social formation inherited from the colonial period, has resulted in the extensive state control measures of the private corporate sector. This attempt has also given rise to the concentration of basic industries in the hands of the state, the sustenance and encouragement of the artisan an petty industries as a counterweight to the private corporate industries and the failure of the bourgeoisie to transform agriculture into a capitalist sector. Finally, it is argued that these measures, in turn, have led to a skewed development of the economy in which the condition of the masses and direct producers has gradually deteriorated, and consequently the economy Is threatened with an uncertain future.Doctor of Philosophy (PhD
