Editor of the “Alumni Bulletin”Bryant CollegeProvidence, R. I.
Dear Sir:
Just want to let you know how much I enjoy receiving the “Bulletin”. It is indeed a pleasure to keep in touch with the College this way - - reading about the progress, and also the news of our classmates, and what the College is doing now.
I think the Bryant Service Club is a wonderful idea, and I would like help. Enclosed is a money order which I hope can be used for something for “our boys”.
You have been sending the “Bulletin” to Esther Lawrence. I have also changed the last name. In September 3, 1942, I was married to 2nd Lieut. Charles W. Semple, at All Saints’ Church, Attleboro, Mass. He is in the Coast Artillery, Anti Aircraft, U.S. Army and is now stationed out of the country.
I’ll be looking forward to the next issue.
Sincerely,
Esther L. Semple

Letter from Major T. R. Hotchkiss to Captain Henry Semple.
During the Civil War, Semple served as a captain of an artillery battery organized in Montgomery (known as Semple's Battery). He was later appointed a major and transferred to Mobile. In the letter Hotchkiss orders Semple to explain "at once why there is an increase of two Horses on your morning report since yesterday morning." He also relieves Semple of his duty of "Officer of the Day.
Defining a phylogenetic tree with the minimum number of r-state characters
Semple and Steel (2002) showed that if T is a phylogenetic X-tree and C is a collection
of r-state characters that defines T , then |C| >[(n 3)/(r - 1)], where n = [X]. In this paper, we
show that, provided n is sufficiently large, this lower bound is sharp. Furthermore, we show that,
for all n > 13, there exists a collection of 4-state characters of size [(n - 3)/3] that defines T , but
there is a phylogenetic X-tree with n = 12 which is not de ned by any set of 3 characters
Letter from T. R. Hotchkiss near Tyner, Tennessee, to Captain Henry Semple.
During the Civil War, Semple served as a captain of an artillery battery organized in Montgomery (known as Semple's Battery). He was later appointed a major and transferred to Mobile. In the letter Hotchkiss informs Semple that his horses can no longer be "wartered" at the spring they have been using
Sarcoidosis presenting with an acute Guillain-Barre syndrome
A 28 year old Caucasian male presented with an acute Guillain-Barré syndrome and bilateral facial weakness. He had an abnormal chest radiograph. Lumbar puncture revealed acellular fluid with a raised protein count and lung function tests showed a restrictive ventilatory defect. The patient deteriorated and required mechanical ventilation for 14 days. Steroids and plasmapheresis were not used and the patient spontaneously recovered. Two months after presentation limb power was almost normal but there was residual partial bilateral facial weakness. The chest radiograph remained abnormal and repeat lung function tests showed a persistent restrictive ventilatory defect and a reduced gas transfer coefficient. A transbronchial biopsy revealed non-caseating granulomata. The association between neurosarcoidosis and Guillain-Barré polyneuropathy is discussed and the literature reviewed
