Relationships between Agroforestry Systems and the Main Agroecological Structure in Coffee Agroecosystems. Case study: Farm BuenaVista (Santander) and Los Ángeles (Cundinamarca)
(Texto tomado de la fuente)The Main Agroecological Structure (MAS) is understood as that quality related to the
agrobiodiversity of the larger agroecosystem (farm) and refers to the spatial configuration
and connectivity of its historically constituted biotic elements. For this reason, from
agroecology and environmental thinking, this research aims to take a case study: Farm
BuenaVista (Santander) and Los Ángeles (Cundinamarca) in Colombia, constituted over
time as agroforestry systems of coffee production under shadow; to deepen the
understanding of the ecosystem and cultural factors that affect the use of agrobiodiversity
at the farm scale.
This, using a mixed methodology that holds qualitative and quantitative materials and
methods and that contemplated for each farm, the use of the MAS as an agrobiodiversity
index, spatial analysis, an agroforestry characterization, semi-structured interviews,
participant observation and review of sources high schools. The results showed the
interconnection between agroecosystems and their ecosystem environment through
different plant covers and bodies of water in internal and external connectors. Likewise, it
was clear that the implementers are aware of the importance of conducting management
practices that contribute to the protection of the environment to reduce the negative
externalities derived from their production processes and the limitations caused by the
historical conditions in which they are immersed.MaestríaMagister en Medio Ambiente y DesarrolloEstudios ambientales agrario
Molecular detection of viruses and viroids in native potato vitroplants and commercial varieties using the qPCR technique
The main focus of our study was the implementation of six systems for the detection of five viruses and a viroid of native and commercially grown potatoes using the qPCR. Standardization of individual reactions and the use of dilutions of known concentration from synthetic positive controls allowed for the construction of calibration curves to characterize the dynamic ranges of the evaluated systems. Proper primer selection, along with thorough computer analysis and evaluation of reaction variables, led to the Successful design of two RT-PCR Múltiplex detection systems with resolution on agarose gels. During the analysis of vitroplant RNA samples, amplification products were detected for the PVX and PVS viruses; however, the presence of all viruses and viroid was not observed in all processed samples. The results of our research provided detailed information on the characteristics of each evaluated system, highlighting differences in the detection limits of the designed systems due to kinetic variables and primer selection. Molecular diagnosis allowed for an assessment of the phytosanitary status of potato vitroplant samples, playing a fundamental role in the certification processes of plant material and propagation.MaestríaMagister en Ciencias - Microbiologí
Local government and leisure:: A study of two local authorities and their responses to the growth of leisure
Local authorities have a long history of providing recreation and leisure services, but since the 1970s leisure departments have expanded with a corresponding growth in the number and importance of professional officers to run them. Growing affluence and improvements in the quality of life have led to a recognition of the social importance of leisure provision, and more recently its economic importance has been established with the introduction of schemes aimed at rejuvenating local areas. This thesis investigates the internal workings of two neighbouring local authorities in the North East of England. It is a comparative study of the District Councils of Wear Valley and Chester-le-Street, focusing primarily on the importance of leisure services in the public sector. It draws attention to the importance of leisure to justify local government as elected bodies concerned with the overall well-being of their local communities. After considering historical, philosophical and sociological perspectives on leisure, and examining the role of public bodies in the provision of leisure, the thesis proceeds with a detailed analysis of leisure services in Wear Valley and Chester-le-Street in a period of dramatic change. An evaluation of the differences in each District and their responses leads to a consideration of the 'Enabling' role now expected of all local authorities. Although local government is an important element in the British political system, it has been subjected to a plethora of legislation since 1979, aimed at reducing public spending and questioning and controlling the role and purpose of local authorities. The comparison of the two Districts involves an investigation of their internal conduct and business. It finds that leisure services are an increasingly important reasons for maintaining elected local authorities
