William Blake was deeply influenced by the revolutions of the late eighteenth century. The events of the turbulent age, specifically the French Revolution, created various impacts on Blake; and led him to many transitions both politically and theologically. He himself and his continental prophetic books are, therefore, the core products of the transitions he went through. In this thesis, the impacts of the different phases of the French Revolution on William Blake will be presented with the analogical readings of the texts and the illustrations with the events of the period. The impact of the revolution on Blake is already studied; yet it is incomplete when it comes to the continental prophetic books. The problem lies in the conceptualization of the French Revolution as a single event of 1789. The French Revolution is rather a series of events beginning from 1789 to 1815. Thus, while focusing on the impacts of the revolution on Blake, special attention will be drawn to the period from 1789 to 1795; early phase of the revolution (1789-1792), Terror Period (1792-1793), war-time period (1793-1795). Each period's impacts on Blake will be presented with references to Blake's works from different years, The French Revolution (1791), The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1790-1793), America, A Prophecy (1793), Europe, A Prophecy (1794), and The Song of Los (1795) respectively.William Blake on sekizinci yüzyılın devrimlerinden derinden etkilenmiştir.

The Use of Introspection in Robert Browning's Early Poetry

    No full text
This study argues that there is a striking resemblance between Robert Browning’s early poetry and “introspection,” which is the psychological method of self-examination or first-person observation of one’s own mental and emotional processes, used by the Victorian psychologists. This dissertation also claims that Browning uses the psychological method of introspection to represent various human psychological states of the main characters in his Pauline (1833), Paracelsus (1835), and Sordello (1840). These works are examples of the introspective poetry of the nineteenth-century “psychological school of poetry.” Accordingly, this dissertation analyses these poems in three main chapters by pursuing the different methods that Browning used in the portrayal of the human soul to obtain an insight into the changes in the inner world of humans and to achieve a realistic representation of it. The endeavour of the main characters in Pauline, Paracelsus, and Sordello to achieve self-knowledge through self-analysis and how they are represented as introspective individuals are scrutinised in these chapters. Furthermore, as an individual of the Victorian culture, Browning’s use of the matters of self-consciousness, the first and/or third-person speech, and subjectivity and objectivity—that were discussed and used in the discourse of introspection—to examine the images of the self and subjective experience are studied and illustrated in the analyses of the works. In these analyses, scientific studies conducted by leading figures in Victorian psychology, and definitions used and discussed by them, are also used in discussing the manner in which Browning represented “the development of the human soul.”Bu çalışma, bireyin öz-inceleme veya kendi zihinsel ve duygusal süreçlerini birinci elden gözlemlemesi için psikolojik bir metot olarak Viktorya dönemi psikologları tarafından kullanılan “içebakış” ile Robert Browning’in ilk dönem şiirleri arasında çarpıcı benzerlikler olduğunu savunmaktadır.

Transgressing Male Boundaries: The Poetic Works of Anne Finch

Anne Finch, the Countess of Winchilsea, is a prolific writer who lived in the period between late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. Although she wrote about different subjects in various literary forms, she rather comes into prominence with her poetic works. She represents political and social issues of her time in her poetic works; however, her major concern is to criticise the secondary position of women in society, particularly in the literary tradition. Although she belonged to a privileged class of her society, in her poetic works, she reflects the problems of women in general regardless of their social classes. Besides, in her poems, Finch’s criticisms of the secondary position of women in society and in marriage are interwoven with her criticisms of the position of the female poet in the poetic tradition. Finch also criticises the gender roles which are allotted to woman through gender stereotyping, particularly the roles that put her in a subordinate and secondary place in art and life. Although other female poets of the period dealt with similar issues in their poetry, Finch’s authenticity lies in her poetics and the way she directs her criticism. The major concern of this study, therefore, is to analyse and discuss Finch’s poetics and style within the frame of these issues. In her poetic works, Finch criticises the (use of) myths that silenced woman. Therefore, in the first chapter, Finch’s strategies of revising and correcting the myths are discussed. In her poems about mythological characters, Finch aims at reinterpreting the myths that metaphorically imprison woman. In the second chapter Finch’s critical strategies in her fables are discussed. Finch brings a female viewpoint to the fables by identifying the gender of the male characters in La Fontaine’s fables as female. In her fables, she challenges stereotypical gender norms by representing strong female characters and weak male characters. Besides, she also adapts La Fontaine fables to current social and political events of her time, therefore, contributes to the development of the English fable tradition. In the third chapter, Finch’s metaphorical employment of the nature elements is discussed. In her nature poems, Finch ascribes new metaphorical meanings to the elements of nature in order to present the plight of the female poet in the poetic tradition. She turns the pastoral shade into a feminine space where the female poet can raise her voice without any restriction; therefore, she delivers a solution to the problem of female poet’s secondary position in the poetic realm. She also builds analogy between the female poet and the bird figure and discusses the significance of freedom for the female poet. In her poetic works, particularly in her nature poems, Finch does not resent the female poet’s exclusion from the poetic tradition, but rather appreciates it because she believes that it enables the female poet to express herself freely without restrictive conventions of the tradition. After an in depth analysis of her poetic works, it is concluded that despite all the restrictions, Finch manages to raise her voice as a female poet and metaphorically becomes an “intruder” in the poetic tradition providing new perspectives to the myths, literary genres and traditions that so far excluded or silenced woman.Winchilsea Kontesi Anne Finch, on yedinci yüzyıl sonları ve on sekizinci yüzyıl başları arasındaki dönemde yaşamış üretken bir yazardır.

The Use of Myth, the Supernatural and the Gothic in John Keats’s Poetry

As a result of the changes England experienced at the end of the eighteenth century, Romanticism emerged as a new literary movement. Under the revolutionary influences of the period, the Romantic poets turned to nature and believed in the guidance of instincts rather than reason. Being one of the second generation English Romantics, John Keats particularly deals with the aesthetic aspects of the movement. His chief interest in his works is a constant search for beauty which he equates with truth. As a poet who believes in the authenticity of imaginative faculty, he does not accept the dominance of intellect in the perception of truth. Rather, he builds an alternative world of beauty to highlight the mysterious aspects of reality, the perception of which requires more than reason.

From Middle-earth to the Real World: J. R. R. Tolkien’s the Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings, and the Silmarillion

Fantasy has long been regarded as an antagonistic genre to realism, and held in contempt because it fails to represent reality. However, despite its departure from consensus reality, fantasy is an equally effective way of approaching reality. This study defends the thesis that J. R. R. Tolkien uses fantasy as a means to reflect upon and change the reality of the primary world. Therefore, this thesis examines The Hobbit(1939), The Lord of the Rings (1954-55), and The Silmarillion (1977), and discusses and illustrates the ways through which Tolkien approaches reality, and how he creates opportunities for a transformation through the refreshing and intense feelings one might experience in Middle-earth, thereby gaining the awareness, willingness, and courage to transform the primary world.

ATASOY, Emrah. “From Ignorance to Experience: Epistemology and Power in Katharine Burdekin’s Swastika Night, Anthony Burgess’s The Wanting Seed and P. D. James’s The Children of Men.” Ph.D. Dissertation, Ankara, 2019. This dissertation deals with three critical dystopias from twentieth-century English literature, namely Katharine Burdekin’s Swastika Night (1937), Anthony Burgess’s The Wanting Seed (1962), and P. D. James’s The Children of Men (1992) focusing on the transition from innocence and ignorance to experience and knowledge. Truth and knowledge presented by the authoritarian regimes in these critical dystopias are fictional constructs. These regimes determine what knowledge is to be communicated to citizens or not, and how it is conveyed to the whole society. The majority of the citizens enjoy an apparent satisfaction with the leadership, which manipulates what is allowed to be known. In this regard, ignorance is regarded as bliss. However, for individual characters in these texts who gain a different awareness, shallow contentment is disrupted with a partial view of what truths have been kept from them. Knowing leads to rebellion and resistance by these protagonists. The plots of these critical dystopias consist in each character’s journey from a land of ignorance to experience. The initial naive innocence of the protagonists is shattered through various geographical, psychological and symbolic transformative journeys in these texts. This transition from innocence to experience turns the protagonists into outcasts as they are pushed into a clash with the ruling body. The protagonists undergo physical and psychological punishment, and are denied a space for individual freedom. However, the exile of these protagonists cannot prevent them from revealing the truth about the regime that finds itself unable to exterminate these rebels. Their survival attests to the partial failure of these totalitarian regimes. Furthermore, the open-ended structure of each critical dystopia reinforces the hope of the utopian impulse and of revisionary epistemology that might lead to a more just society. D. James’in The Children of Men Eserlerinde Cehaletten Tecrübeye: Epistemoloji ve İktidar.” Doktora Tezi, Ankara, 2019. Bu çalışmada, Swastika Night (Katharine Burdekin, 1937), The Wanting Seed (Anthony Burgess, 1962) ve The Children of Men (P. D. James, 1992) başlıklı üç ümitvar distopya ele alınmaktadır. Anahtar Sözcükler Swastika Night, The Wanting Seed, The Children of Men, ümitvar distopya, epistemolojik savaş, dönüştüren yolculuk, ütopik ankla

Yirminci Yüzyılda Shakespeare’in Sosyal ve Tarihî Bağlamda Yeniden Yazımları: Edward Bond’un Lear’ı, Arnold Wesker’ın The Merchant’ı ve Howard Barker’ın Gertrude-The Cry’ı

    No full text
This study examines re-writings of Shakespeare in British drama, Edward Bond’s Lear (1971), Arnold Wesker’s The Merchant (1976) and Howard Barker’s Gertrude-The Cry (2002) in relation to the socio-political, historical and cultural backgrounds of the periods in which they were generated. These works are considered both as commentary to the events of their historical background, and as plays that question Shakespeare’s literary and cultural status. Thus, it is asserted that re-writing has a significant function in terms of creating alternative ideas to the ways in which critical issues are discussed in the canonical texts and their political and ideological foundations. In the Introduction, re-writing’s association with adaptation theory and intertextuality as a postmodern practice is considered. Additionally, the development of Shakespearean re-writing, its reception, and its functions are discussed. Within the scope of these ideas, it is concluded that Shakespeare’s works are questioned, and their ideological aspects are criticised through reworkings. In the first chapter, Edward Bond’s Lear is examined as a Marxist-Socialist appropriation written against Shakespeare’s uncritical attitude to issues like class inequality and violence in King Lear (1606). Considering the problems of the 1970s’ Britain such as unequal class structure, student and worker’s riots, inefficiency of leftist politicians, violence triggered by Stalinism and the Vietnam War, it is discussed that Bond’s appropriation is not only a Shakespeare re-writing but also a play that sheds light on the concerns of its period. In the second chapter, Arnold Wesker’s The Merchant is analysed in terms of identity politics as the play criticises Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice (1605) for its antisemitic discourse. Accordingly, Wesker’s re-writing, as a play produced in the post-Holocaust context, is correlated with some events in its historical background such as Arab-Israeli conflict, Six Day War and Yom Kippur War. In the third chapter, Howard Barker’s Gertrude-The Cry is discussed as a response to the representation of the woman figure in Shakespeare’s Hamlet (1600) in terms of sexual and gender politics. Considering the issues of the play such as individual will and sexual freedom in relation to the regulations of New Labour as the ruling party in Britain in the 2000s, Barker’s work is also analysed as a criticism of its historical context. In the Conclusion, it is revealed that re-writings of Shakespeare in British Drama reflect theoretical, cultural, socio-political and ideological aspects of the periods in which they are created, and they also adopt a critical attitude to Shakespeare’s works. In the light of the plays examined thematically and technically in this study, it is discussed that, Shakespeare’s works evolve in a way that reflects the significant events and concerns of subsequent ages.TABLE OF CONTENTS KABUL VE ONAY………………….…………………………………………………i BİLDİRİM…………………………….……………………………………………….ii YAYIMLAMA VE FİKRİ MÜLKİYET HAKLARI BEYANI………………….........…iii ETİK BEYAN……………………….…………………………………………………iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS………….……………………………………..………...v ABSTRACT……………………….…….…………………………………...……….vii ÖZET………………………………….……………………………………..………..ix TABLE OF CONTENTS…………….…….……….….…………………...………...xi INTRODUCTION……………….…….…….…………………………………………1 CHAPTER I: EDWARD BOND’S LEAR: SOCIALIST POLITICS IN KING LEAR………….…….……………………………………………………61 CHAPTER II: ARNOLD WESKER’S THE MERCHANT: IDENTITY POLITICS IN THE MERCHANT OF VENICE………………………………………................................................…..112 CHAPTER III: HOWARD BARKER’S GERTRUDE-THE CRY: SEXUAL AND GENDER POLITICS IN HAMLET………………………………………..….157 CONCLUSION……………………………………………………………...………207 NOTES………………………………….……………………………………...……216 WORKS CITED…………………….……………………………………………….217 APPENDIX I: A LIST OF SHAKESPEARE RE-WRITINGS….….………....……245 APPENDIX II: ORIGINALITY REPORTS……………….….…….….……....……260 APPENDIX III: ETHICS BOARD WAIVER FORMS……………………….....…..262Bu çalışma, Shakespeare’in eserlerinin İngiliz tiyatrosunda yeniden yazım örneklerinden olan Edward Bond’un Lear (1971), Arnold Wesker’ın The Merchant (1976) ve Howard Barker’ın Gertrude-The Cry (2002) adlı eserlerini yazıldıkları dönemin sosyo-politik, tarihî ve kültürel art alanına ilişkin olarak incelemektedir. İkinci bölümde, Arnold Wesker’ın The Merchant adlı eseri, Shakespeare’in Venedik Taciri (1605) adlı oyununu içerdiği Yahudi aleyhtarı söylem bakımından eleştirdiğinden kimlik politikaları kapsamında incelenmektedir. Nazi soykırımı sonrası dönemde üretilmiş bir eser olan Wesker’ın yeniden yazımı, yazıldığı dönemde yaşanan Arap-İsrail çatışması, Altı Gün Savaşı ve Yom Kippur Savaşı gibi olaylarla ilişkilendirilmektedir. Son bölümde, Howard Barker’ın Gertrude-The Cry adlı oyunu Shakespeare’in Hamlet (1600) adlı eserindeki kadın karakterin temsiline karşı cinsel politika bağlamında bir yanıt olarak ele alınmaktadır.

Individuals Oppressed by Society: Rupert Thomson's "Divided Kingdom," Kazuo Ishiguro's "Never Let Me Go," and Jasper Fforde's "Shades Of Grey."

Dystopian fiction is a genre which critically portrays an oppressive society with its mostly totalitarian governmental system. This dissertation analyses Rupert Thomson's Divided Kingdom (2005), Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go (2005), and Jasper Fforde's Shades of Grey (2010) as examples of contemporary British dystopian fiction. In this sense, this study is an attempt to analyse and discuss how these three contemporary novels present both a similar picture to their precursors and also a different one from them. This dissertation aims to analyse how these three novels focus on the dilemma of the individual's blindness and awareness in the oppressive society in the light of utopian studies and cultural theories. These novels propose that the awareness of the individual will raise some questionsin his/her mind. Although the choice to be submissive or subversive is left to the individuals, no opportunity or possibility for an escape and an alternative life is offered in the novels. Bu çalışmada Rupert Thomson'ın Divided Kingdom (2005), Kazuo Ishiguro'nun Never Let Me Go (2005) ve Jasper Fforde'un Shades of Grey (2010) adlı romanları günümüz İngiliz distopik romanının örnekleri olarak incelenmektedir.

Writing Against the Current: Algernon Charles Swinburne's Poetry

    No full text
Algernon Charles Swinburne is an enigmatic figure in Victorian poetry. He was associated with contemporary literary movements of his age, which challenged the conventional understanding of art, including the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, French Aestheticism and emerging English Aestheticism. Swinburne devoted his poetry and critical writings to bring about a change into contemporary poetry. He developed his own theories concerning the scope of poetry and the responsibilities of the poet. His critical writings helped develop the intellectual and practical aspects of art for art's sake movement and ushered the Decadent Movement. He experimented with form and the subject matter of poetry throughout his long literary career. Through his poetry, he aimed to communicate and excite passion in the reader. Swinburne believed that poetry should be free from any external authority and able to address all aspects of human experience. He was a marginal figure in that his conception of poetry was neither didactic nor shaped by the established social norms and moral values. By forgoing the morality of his age, Swinburne shifted the focus of his poetry on concepts such as liberty, passion, and sexuality. He called the poetic tradition of his age into question and aimed to improve the standards of contemporary literary criticism. Accordingly, this thesis aims to explore the strategies and methods Swinburne employed to challenge the poetic conventions of his age along with the critical arguments he put forward so as to ascertain his contributions to contemporary aesthetic movement and Victorian poetry. Chapter I analyses features of Swinburne's poetry and his experimentation in the form of poetry in relation to his search for a new form. Chapter II examines his poetry in relation to the morality of the Victorian period in order to demonstrate Swinburne's endeavours to set poetry free from the authority of conventions. This thesis ultimately provides an insight into Swinburne's critical and poetical ambitions and his contributions to the Victorian poetry.
