The transcription factor Foxm1 controls pro-stemness microRNAs in cerebellar neural stem cells (NSCs)
Background: Cerebellar neural stem cells (NSCs) maintenance is of great interest since NSCs can be used to treat impaired cells and tissues or improve regenerative power of degenerating cells in neurodegenerative diseases or spinal cord injuries. Under maintenance conditions, NSCs express a number of Hedgehog-Gli (Hh-Gli) linked and stemness genes (e.g. Nanog, Oct4, Sox2) whose mechanisms of regulation have been under investigation. However, the interplay between transcription factors and microRNAs in NSCs is still being charted.
Aim: Identification of new molecular players involved in NSCs’ maintenance with particular interest in the major regulatory pathway Hedgehog-Gli.
Materials and Methods: Cells used for the study were NSCs isolated from postnatal day 4 (P4) wild type (C57BL/6) mice cultured both as neurospheres in selective medium and as differentiated NSCs when cultured in medium with serum. NSCs and their differentiated counterparts were analysed by high-throughput technologies. Bioinformatics analysis was used for the identification of the Foxm1-regulated miRNAs; knock-down experiments and clonogenic assays were used for functional studies. Chromatin immunoprecipitation experiments (ChIP) were used to investigate the binding between Foxm1 and its targets and between Foxm1 and its regulators.
Results: NSCs and their differentiated counterparts were analysed using next-generation mRNA- and miRNA-sequencing. The transcriptional analysis allowed the identification of Foxm1 as one of the highest transcripts in NSCs and the miRNA-sequencing provided a number of highly expressed miRNAs. The use of bioinformatics analysis resulted in the Foxm1-regulated miRNAs, miR-15 ~ 16 cluster, miR-17 ~ 92 cluster, miR- 130b and miR-301a. Functional experiments, such as knock-down experiments and clonogenic assays enabled the identification of Foxm1 as a downstream mediator of the Hh-Gli signalling and with the ability to regulate the above mention miRNAs.
Conclusion: The study presented reveals a new Foxm1-microRNAs network with a major role in the maintenance of NSCs. These results add a previously unidentified important molecular aspect that could be used in future neurodegenerative disease studies, thus enriching the field of translational medicine

Entity linking on philosophical documents
Entity Linking consists in automatically enriching a document by detecting the text fragments mentioning a given entity in an external knowledge base, e.g., Wikipedia. This problem is a hot research topic due to its impact in several text-understanding related tasks. However, its application to some specfiic, restricted topic domains has not received much attention. In this work we study how we can improve entity linking performance by exploiting a domain-oriented knowledge base, obtained by filtering out from Wikipedia the entities that are not relevant for the target domain. We focus on the philosophical domain, and we experiment a combination of three different entity filtering approaches: one based on the Philosophy" category of Wikipedia, and two based on similarity metrics between philosophical documents and the textual description of the entities in the knowledge base, namely cosine similarity and Kullback-Leibler divergence. We apply traditional entity linking strategies to the domainoriented knowledge base obtained with these filtering techniques. Finally, we use the resulting enriched documents to conduct a preliminary user study with an expert in the area
Adaptive Diversity in Recommender Systems
The evaluation of a recommendation engine cannot rely only on the accuracy of provided recommendations. One should consider ad- ditional dimensions, such as diversity of provided suggestions, in order to guarantee heterogeneity in the recommendation list. In this paper we analyse users' propensity in selecting diverse items, by taking into account content-based item attributes. Individual propensity to diversi- fication is used to re-rank the list of Top-N items predicted by a rec- ommendation algorithm, with the aim of fostering diversity in the final ranking. We show experimental results that confirm the validity of our modelling approach
An Innovative Device for the Manipulation of End-of-Life Household Appliances
The paper is focused on the description of the layout of a disassembly cell in which an innovative manipulator is able to move and orient a discarded washing machinein order to present it ergonomically to the worker. The manipulatoro is equipped with a patented gripper able to grasp the washer ny acting on the internal surface of the drum
Automatic Web Page Categorization by Link and Context Analysis
Assistance in retrieving documents on the World Wide Web is provided either by search engines, through keyword-based queries, or by catalogues, which organize documents into hierarchical collections. Maintaining catalogues manually is becoming increasingly difficult, due to the sheer amount of material on the Web; it is thus becoming necessary to resort to techniques for the automatic classification of documents. Automatic classification is traditionally performed by extracting the information for representing a document (“indexing”) from the document itself. The paper describes the novel technique of categorization by context, which instead extracts useful information for classifying a document from the context where a URL referring to it appears. We present the results of experimenting with Theseus, a classifier that exploits this technique
Gnrh in the treatment of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is the focus of the scientific debate for the treatment of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Sexual maturation and reproductive function depend on the pulsatile secretion of GnRH that are mainly congenital and may or may not be associated with other genetic anomalies or syn-dromes. Clinical manifestations include a wide range of metabolic, endocrine, and psychologic dysfunctions. The following manuscript focuses on the effects of GnRH therapy on fertility and cognitive abilities, aiming to inves-tigate the current level of evidence for this treatment regimen. Current literature has been reviewed with the aim of highlighting the key findings on these two aspects
