Abstract Author: Jessica Göransson & Sener Tulpar Title: “Apprehension and application of the word neglect, and riskfactors that can lead to words like neglect and incongruity can arise within the geriatric care.” Supervisor: Yoshiko Boregren Matsui The purpose with this study was to begin with to examine how the word neglect was understood and used within the geriatric care and in the different categories of people in the organisation. During the study we became aware of that the word neglect not was used within the geriatric care. We also choose to concentrate us on media and how they apprehend and use the word neglect. We also were interested in what riskfactors that can arise within the geriatric care and what situations that can arise and be associated with the word neglect or incongruity within the geriatric care. The result of our study shows that there is no big difference in how geriatric care and media understands the word neglect. The big difference lies in how they use the word. Our study also shows that stress and absence of communication are two riskfactors within the geriatric care. For our study we have performed eleven individual, structured interviews on different categories of people within the geriatric care, and with two journalists within media Keyword: geriatric care, care, incongruity, neglect, human rights

Baykara, Tarık (Dogus Author) -- Karcı, Yağmur (Dogus Author) -- Rüya Yurttaş (Dogus Author) -- Ayşen Tulpar (Dogus Author) -- Demirural, Alparslan (Dogus Author)Recently, there has been considerable interest in doing research and development on functional nano coated textiles and in creating innovative textile products. Studies have been continued for developing innovative high value-added textile products with antimicrobial, hydrophobic (water and stain repellent), hydrophilic “easy-cleaning” and UV resistant properties. The aim of this work is to impart antimicrobial and hydrophobic properties to raw cotton fabrics via functional nano coating processing techniques. Nano silver particles synthesized from silver nitrate (AgNO3) and sodium citrate (Na3C6H5O7) are impregnated into raw cotton fabrics to develop antimicrobial properties. To investigate the antimicrobial activity of the treated cotton fabric, E. Coli bacteria tests have been performed. Coating the raw cotton fabric with methyltriethoxysilane (CH3Si(OC2H5)3), phenyltrimethoxysilane (C6H5Si(OCH3)3), and alcosols synthesized from these two compounds using sol gel techniques, produced hydrophobic surfaces. Contact angle measurements and easy-cleaning tests are performed on these surfaces

Design of cylindrical steel liquid tanks with stepped walls using One-foot method

    No full text
Cylindrical steel tanks are used in most countries to store bulk volumes of both solid and liquid products such as water, oil, gasoline and grain. Such steel tanks are prone to buckling when subjected to external pressure either due to vacuum or due to wind. These types of shell structures are generally controlled by elastic buckling failure because of the thin wall thickness. Cylindrical shells are commonly constructed with stepwise variable wall thickness due to economic reasons. The thickness of the tank shell wall is designed to increase from top to bottom because the stress resultants on the tank wall gradually increase towards the base of the tank. For open-top tanks, a primary stiffening ring is required at or near the top to maintain roundness under all loads. Stress resultants in a primary stiffening ring were previously identified by the Author for uniform wall thick tanks. In this new study, the applicability of this hand calculation method in stepped wall tanks has been investigated. Pursuant to this goal, a specified tank shell was designed considering One-foot method. Then, the stepped wall tank was transformed into an equivalent 1-course tank for hand calculation. Using the previously developed hand calculation method by Author, a test for the in-plane bending moment in the ring was conducted to achieve an acceptable value for stepped wall tanks. The analysis results show that the previously proposed method for uniform wall thick tanks may also be used for stepped wall tanks considering an equivalent thickness. On the other hand, using Linear Buckling Analysis (LBA), the buckling mode was obtained for two different stepped wall tanks in the study

Influence of the distance between vertical cylinders positioned in a row on the wind load on them

The silos and vertical cylindrical tanks of small volumes are often built in batteries, at short distances between them. As a result of their close location, the wind load on them increases. In the European standard EN 1991-1-4:2005+A1:2010 exists a methodology for determining this increase, which is dependent on the ratio a/d, where a is the distance between the facilities and d is their diameters. Unfortunately, this methodology is applicable for ratios a/d > 2.5. In cases where the values are smaller, the standard transfers to the national annexes. In the available to the author annexes, including the Bulgarian one, there is nothing on the subject. Moreover, the necessary information could not be found in the public scientific literature. Only in the Australian/New Zealand standard AS/NZS 1170.2:2011 are written some simple rules for closely spaced vessels. To fill this gap, multiple models of closely spaced cylindrical bodies has been created by the author. A computer fluid simulation (CFD) program is used for this purpose. In the present study, the bodies are arranged in one row and the wind blows them perpendicularly. Through these computer models is determined how the wind load changes due to their proximity. In contrast to what is stated in EN 1991-1-4:2005+A1:2010, the dependence is not linear, and the influence of the close arrangement of the bodies decays much faster. On the other hand, this influence should be considered at much greater distances between bodies than stated in AS/NZS 1170.2:2011

Vertical stiffeners and internal pressure - influencing factors on distribution of meridional stresses in steel silos on discrete supports

    No full text
Steel silos are interesting, complicated facilities. In order to ensure unloading of whole amount of stored product by gravity, they are often placed on supporting structure. Values of stresses in joints between thin sheets and supporting frame elements are very high, which could cause local loss of stability in thin shells. Many researchers have worked on values and distribution of the meridional stresses in that joints. Their traditional approach is to divide in their minds cylindrical shell on two parts - discretely supported ring beam and continuously supported shell above it. As a result of their efforts critical height of shell Hcr and ideal position of intermediate stiffening ring on shell are determined. The scientific results are based on semi-membrane theory of Vlasov, in which influence of vertical stiffeners and internal pressure is not accounted. On other hand all steel silos are loaded with an internal pressure and majority of them have vertical stiffeners above supports. Is it possible the obtained scientific results to be applied to these silos? In a present article the author will show that stiffeners and pressure should not be ignored in an analysis

Design procedure for ductile tension-only seismic bracing with an energy dissipation ring

    No full text
This paper will present a design solution for a ductile, tension–only seismic bracing with the use of an energy dissipating ring. This type of bracing behaves very well under seismic loading and has shown, by testing carried out in conjunction with the University of British Columbia, that it can reach very high post elastic drift limits. The presented procedure is a method created by the author and is based on information collected during the research testing program performed by the Civil Engineering Department at the University of British Columbia. The team was led by Professor Carlos Ventura, in collaboration with Dejan Erdevicki from Erdevicki Structural Engineering. The presented design procedure describes the behaviour of the system, the relation between energy, forces, drift limits and capacities of the ring. It also includes geometrical limitations and requirements for the ring element and bracing system, to ensure that target drifts can be achieved. It allows the user to calculate seismic forces and reduction factors based on an energy criterion and the chosen final drift of the structure. For longer period structures, an equal displacement principle was discussed and considered. The procedure can be used for seismic capacity design and is easily adjusted to suit applicable national codes. Ring capacity tables and examples are also included. This ductile, tension–only bracing, with an energy dissipating ring, can be used for new structures, as well as for the retrofit of existing ones. The system is relatively simple and allows for easy replacement of the ring after an earthquake event if needed. The application of the bracing system for buildings, including multi-storey structures, will be discussed
