The Emotions in the Classics of Sociology. A Study in Social Theory
The Emotions in the Classics of Sociology stands as an innovative sociological research that introduces the study of emotions through a detailed examination of the theories and concepts of the classical authors of discipline.
Sociology plays a crucial role emphasizing how much emotional expressions affect social dynamics, thus focusing on the ways in which subjects show (or decide to show) a specific emotional behaviour based on the social and historical context in which they act. This book focuses the attention on the individual emotions that are theorized and studied as forms of communication between subjects as well as magnifying glasses to understand the processes of change in the communities. This volume, therefore, guides the readers through an in-depth overview of the main turning points in the social theory of the classical authors of sociology highlighting the constant interaction between emotional, social and cultural elements. Thus, demonstrating how the attention of the emotional way of acting of the single subject was already present in the classics of the discipline
The Hunger Games: A Look at Food Interventions in the Context of COVID-19
Since government actions at all levels began in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic in Argentina, the State, the market and NGOs have been targeted at the poorest and most impoverished sectors of the country. Based on the analysis and interpretation of various records of the mass media and official documents, this article systematizes various difficulties around hunger, with the aim of opening a critical discussion on them from the perspective of sociologies of bodies/emotions. The expository strategy will be as follows: a) the theoretical starting point of the connection between hunger, the body and emotions is synthesized, b) the situation of poverty and pre-pandemic hunger in Argentina is outlined, c) some of the multiple emotions of the intervention are characterized and d) some interpretations of the interventions characterized are presented.Fil: Scribano, Adrián Oscar. Work and sensibilities. Commodification and processes of expropriation around digital labour
The notion of digital labour has revitalized discussions around critical communication studies, but it has also been relevant to inquiries on the metamorphosis of labour relationships, and even in studies of everyday life in the context of Society 4.0. Addressing questions emerging from those insights, this chapter explores some contributions from the sociology of the body/emotions for understanding the practices and politics of sensibilities associated with digital labour. To do this, this chapter (i) explores various theoretical debates around the definition of digital labour, in order to underline the relevance of redefining forms of exploitation regarding related practices, (ii) develops arguments from the perspective of the sociology of bodies/emotions, which allow us to understand in what sense the technological mediation linked to the expansion of ICTs constitutes a reconfiguration of ?the politics of the senses? (look, see, observe, touch etc.) and (iii) analyses cases of workers in ICT industries (based on testimonies and records of virtual ethnography) that allow us to connect their daily experience with certain mechanisms of expropriation and commodification of the vitality of bodies.Fil: Scribano, Adrián Oscar. Latin America: Body, Memory and Cyberspace
Human beings learn through the body, which implies a permanent but contingent crossing between perceptions, sensations and emotions. The ways to construct, distribute, and reproduce this knowledge stay and operate from individual memories (as a subject), social memories (as a subject belonging to a class), and collective memories (as a subject belonging to a class with particular identities). Parting from the existing studies on memory, body politics and cyberspace, this chapter describes ways in which these factors are shaped on the web, configuring political institutions, knowledge, and collective-action.Then, a conceptual map on the links between body, memory, emotions and cyberspace is presented. Finally, a possible agenda for Latin American social sciences is delineated, making a statement on the need of “emotional memory” approximations. Social and collective memory as a particularly important issue for Latin America, found in cyberspace a place where to build and re-build their central features.Fil: Scribano, Adrián Oscar. Die Alone in Argentina: A View from Sensibilities in Times of the Pandemic
The objective of this work is to reflect on the sensibilities related to dying and death, in the context of the current coronavirus pandemic. The presentational strategy that we have envisaged in this regard begins by defining and establishing the theoretical perspective in which our proposal is framed: the sociology of bodies/emotions. Then we go back to another global crisis that occurred a century ago, known as the Spanish Flu. The reason for this is to recover some antecedents that allow us to enrich our approach to this phenomenon that is still ongoing; not in comparable terms (since both episodes are not), but rather illustrative. Finally, we will deal with the three traits that, in our opinion, characterize the collective bond with the dying and corpses at the present moment: mediated death, regulated death, and cherished death.Fil: Scribano, Adrián Oscar. Introduction: Philosophical and Medical Galenisms
The persistence of remnants of Galenism in spite of the gradual obsolescence of its overall theoretical framework is currently a lively topic in the history of medicine. Galen’s influence, however, was not limited to the medical field. So far, most studies on Galen’s early modern legacy have mainly focused on the specifically medical side of post-medieval and Renaissance Galenism. However, this privileged focus on sixteenth-century medicine may easily result in overlooking the long-term effect of Galen’s rediscovery as well as the specifically philosophical import of early modern Galenism. Even after becoming largely obsolete as a scientific and medical system, Galenism was still able to inspire philosophical debates and inform philosophical theories. Moreover, far from surviving as a single and unequivocally identifiable school of thought, post-Renaissance Galenism spread its influence across different or even competing schools like mechanism and vitalism. The present collection of studies aims to explore the interactions between medical and philosophical Galenisms that took place from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century
Emotions and Pandemic: A Sociological View of Social Sensibilities
Here we propose to explore the emotions experienced by people living in Europe concerning the pandemic based on a quantitative strategy. For this, (a), emotions are sociologically defined; (b), the elaborated investigation strategy is then developed (an exploratory, non-probabilistic design, based on a self-administered questionnaire, distributed via 'snowball' sampling in 17 countries); and interpretations are developed about the main variables: emotions, experience, age groups and gender. Finally, (c) some conclusions are presented that link the aforementioned emotions with a politics of sensibilities, seen as a relevant component of the global structuration processes of societies in the context of the pandemic.Fil: Scribano, Adrián Oscar.
