He begins sharing his early academic and traveling backgrounds that led him to pursue Scandinavian Linguistics as a master’s student, and then Scandinavian Folklore as a doctoral student at UW-Madison. He shares about his memories of TA-ing in the 1990s; departmental dynamics; and teaching and developing early online classes, including the highly popular Hans Christian Andersen course. In 1999 after finishing his PhD, he was hired into the department as a lecturer. Mellor reflects on his teaching style and the ways he connects with students through pop culture in his First Year Interest Group, his involvement in the International Learning Community and the Bradley Learning Community, and mentions some of his courses, including classes focused on the Vikings, Icelandic Sagas, Scandinavian Literature, and Nordic Mythology. He also shares his memories of the TAA in the 1990s and addresses the importance of diverse voices in scholarship. He addresses academic governance, the relationship between academic staff and faculty, and the committees he served on, namely the titling committee, in which he successfully advocated for the establishment of the title “professor of teaching.” Other topics Mellor discusses include 9/11, Wisconsin’s Act 10, teaching before and after Covid, and his thoughts about receiving the Academic Staff award. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the Academic Staff Award Winners project of the UW-Madison Archives and Records Management Oral History Collection

Exploring counsellors’ experiences of working with suicidal clients, with particular focus on the issue of responsibility

    No full text
A qualitative study is presented revisiting the work of Reeves and Mintz (2001) in exploring the experiences of counsellors working with suicidal clients and extending the focus to the issue of locus of responsibility. Following a review of the literature, semi-structured interviews were undertaken with six experienced counsellors currently or recently working with suicidal clients. These were recorded, transcribed and the material analysed using the constant comparative method (Maykut & Morehouse, 1994) to yield twelve categories representing participants experience. Themes emerging included: the impact of training, experience and organisational context, issues of client autonomy and professional responsibility, contrasting thoughts and feelings of counsellors when clients disclose suicidal feelings, ways counsellors seek to work with suicidal clients whilst dealing with their own feelings and finally, the locus of responsibility for the suicidal client and young clients especially. These are placed in context of the literature and limitations; implications for practice and further research are discussed

Interprofessional care co-ordinators: the benefits and tensions associated with a new role in UK acute health care

    No full text
While more flexible models of service delivery are being introduced in UK health and social care, little is known about the impact of new roles, particularly support worker roles, on the work of existing practitioners. This action research study aimed to explore the impact of one such new role, that of interprofessional care co-ordinators (IPCCs). The general (internal) medical service of a UK hospital uses IPCCs to provide support to the interprofessional team and, in doing so, promote efficiency of acute bed use. Using a range of methods, mainly qualitative, this action research study sought to explore the characteristics and impact of the role on interprofessional team working. While the role's flexibility, autonomy and informality contributed to success in meeting its intended objectives, these characteristics also caused some tensions with interprofessional colleagues. These benefits and tensions mirror wider issues associated with the current modernisation agenda in UK health care
