Infestation of gorse pods by Cydia ulicetana and Exapion ulicis in the South Island of New Zealand
The effectiveness of Cydia ulicetana
(Haworth) (gorse pod moth) and Exapion
ulicis (Förster) (gorse seed weevil)
at reducing annual production of gorse
seed (Ulex europaeus L.) was compared
at six sites over the South Island, New
Zealand. The highest percentage (45%)
of pods damaged by C. ulicetana was at
East Takaka in May 2002, and E. ulicis,
was most effective at Lake Ohau (76%)
in January 2003. The percentage of damaged
pods fluctuated. Although there
were climatic differences among sites,
they did not differ signifi cantly in the
proportion of gorse pods damaged by C.
ulicetana. However, there was a signifi -
cant seasonal difference (P <0.001) over
all observations and C. ulicetana was responsible
for damaging approximately
20% of gorse pods

81 fJ/bit energy-to-data ratio of 850 nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers for optical interconnects

Lett. 98, 231106 (2011) and may be found at https://doi.org/10.1063/1.3597799.Extremely energy-efficient oxide-confined high-speed 850 nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers for optical interconnects are presented. Error-free performance at 17 and 25 Gb/s via a 100 m multimode fiber link is demonstrated at record high dissipation-power-efficiencies of up to 69 fJ/bit (<0.1mW/Gbps) and 99 fJ/bit, respectively. These are the most power efficient high-speed directly modulated light sources reported to date. The total energy-to-data ratio is 83 fJ/bit at 25°C and reduces to 81 fJ/bit at 55°C. These results were obtained without adjustment of driving conditions. Single-drive high-speed lumped depletion-type modulators toward 10 fJ/bit energy consumption
Reduction of modulator energy consumption to 10 fJ/bit is essential for the sustainable development of communication systems. Lumped modulators might be a viable solution if instructed by a complete theory system. Here, we present a complete analytical electro-optic response theory, energy consumption analysis, and eye diagrams on absolute scales for lumped modulators. Consequently the speed limitation is understood and alleviated by single-drive configuration, and comprehensive knowledge into the energy dependence on structural parameters significantly reduces energy consumption. The results show that silicon modulation energy as low as 80.8 and 21.5 fJ/bit can be achieved at 28 Gbd under 50 and 10 Omega impedance drivers, respectively. A 50 Gbd modulation is also shown to be possible. The analytical models can be extended to lumped modulators on other material platforms and offer a promising solution to the current challenges of modulation energy reduction. The embryonic genes Dkk3, Hoxd8, Hoxd9 and Tbx1 identify muscle types in a diet-independent and fiber-type unrelated way
Abstract Background The mouse skeletal muscle is composed of four distinct fiber types that differ in contractile function, number of mitochondria and metabolism. Every muscle type has a specific composition and distribution of the four fiber types. To find novel genes involved in specifying muscle types, we used microarray analysis to compare the gastrocnemius with the quadriceps from mice fed a low fat diet (LFD) or high fat diet (HFD) for 8 weeks. Additional qPCR analysis were performed in the gastrocnemius, quadriceps and soleus muscle from mice fed an LFD or HFD for 20 weeks. Results In mice fed the 8-week LFD 162 genes were differentially expressed in the gastrocnemius vs. the quadriceps. Genes with the strongest differences in expression were markers for oxidative fiber types (e.g. Tnni1) and genes which are known to be involved in embryogenesis (Dkk3, Hoxd8,Hoxd9 and Tbx1). Also Dkk2, Hoxa5, Hoxa10, Hoxc9, Hoxc10, Hoxc6 and Tbx15 were detectably, but not differentially expressed in adult muscle tissue. Expression of differentially expressed genes was not influenced by an 8-week or 20-week HFD. Comparing gastrocnemius, quadriceps and soleus, expression of Hoxd8 and Hoxd9 was not related with expression of markers for the four different fiber types. We found that the expression of both Hoxd8 and Hoxd9 was much higher in the gastrocnemius than in the quadriceps or soleus, whereas the expression of Dkk3 was high in quadriceps, but low in both gastrocnemius and soleus. Finally, expression of Tbx1 was high in quadriceps, intermediate in soleus and low in gastrocnemius. Conclusions We found that genes from the Dkk family, Hox family and Tbx family are detectably expressed in adult mouse muscle. Interestingly, expression of Dkk3, Hoxd8, Hoxd9 and Tbx1 was highly different between gastrocnemius, quadriceps and soleus. In fact, every muscle type showed a unique combination of expression of these four genes which was not influenced by diet. Altogether, we conclude that genes important for embryogenesis identify mouse muscle types in a diet-independent and fiber type-unrelated manner.</p

SPIN AND CHARGE FLUCTUATIONS IN ITINERANT-ELECTRON MAGNETISM - A VARIATIONAL FUNCTIONAL-INTEGRAL APPROXIMATION
The single-site spin-fluctuation theory of metallic magnetism developed by Hubbard and Hasegawa is modified and extended to investigate the effects of spin and charge fluctuations on the magnetic properties at finite temperature. The key point of our scheme is to adopt a continuous decomposition of the interacting part of the Hubbard Hamiltonian in the Stratonovich-Hubbard transformation, resulting in the separation of the charge fluctuations from the spin fluctuations. This separation makes a better description for the contrary nature between the two types of fluctuations. In order to remove the ambiguity, a variational principle is introduced to determine the appropriate form of the decomposition of the Hubbard model. The ground-state properties, the Curie temperature, the magnetization, and the paramagnetic susceptibility, etc., at finite temperature are calculated and compared with the Hasegawa theory. The improvement of the Curie temperature is significant, and better behavior of the temperature dependence of the magnetization is obtained.Physics, Condensed MatterSCI(E)6ARTICLE1712795-128044
