Protallocoxa Schultz, 1978 Figs 2C,D, 3F Protallocoxa Schultz, 1978: 246-250, figs 1A-K, 2A-I. Protallocoxa.- Schultz, 1979b: 78-79, figs 3--4. Stenetrium. Wilson, 1980: 219-221. 1)rpe species. Protallocoxa weddellensis Schultz, 1978. Species included. See Table 1. Diagnosis. Head wider than long with broad lateral spines and antennal spines almost absent. Rostrum robust, elongate, roundly pointed, as long as cephalon with smooth lateral margins. Eyes small, anterolateral reniform. Maxilliped endopodite distal margin with 7- 8 fan setae; epipod with rounded distal tip. Antennal article 1 without lateral spines. Antennular flagellum with 10-20 articles. Pereon robust with smoothly rounded lateral margins; coxae not visible in dorsal view. Male pereopod I propodus as long as wide, with setose propodal palm lacking teeth; dactylus equal to length of propodal palm. Male pleopod 11 protopod with small distal extension; exopod and endopod subdistal on medial margin; appendix masculina elongate with blunt distal tip and small subapical row of short, proximally directed cuticular hairs. Female pleopod 11 apex acutely pointed. Pleotelson lateral margins smooth and posteriorly truncated, with weak posterolateral spines, telsonic region between uropods sharply truncated. Uropods s~ort, barely emerging from pleotelson margin in dorsal VIew. Remarks. The use of plesiomorphic and/or variable characters while ignoring other diagnostic features has clouded the definition of this genus. Protallocoxa Schultz, 1978 originally was based on a freely-articulating, protruding coxa of the first pereopod. Schultz (1978) considered this character to be a primitive asellote feature and used it as a justification for a new superfamily, the Protallocoxoidea. Wilson (1980) later showed that this feature was a plesiomorphic condition in brooding females of many asellote species, including Stenetrium, and synonymised Schultz's taxon back into the Stenetriidae as S. weddellense. In our proposed classification, Protallocoxa regains its generic status within the family because the member species, P. weddellense and P. abyssale have several unique features among the Stenetriidae, particularly a lack of coxal projections visible in dorsal view and reduced marginal spines on the body.Published as part of Serov, Peter A. & Wilson, George D. Nannonisconus Schultz 1966

Nannonisconus Schultz, 1966 Nannonisconus Schultz, 1966: 24. Siebenaller & Hessler, 1977: 22; 1981: 249; Wilson, 1997: 102; Kussakin, 1999: 65. Type species. Nannonisconus latipleonus Schultz, 1966. Composition. N. carinatus Mezhov, 1986; N. intermedius (Siebenaller & Hessler, 1981), comb. nov.; N. latipleonus Schultz, 1966. Diagnosis. Body with concave lateral outline in dorsal view. Pereonal tergites projecting laterally from pereopodal coxae; pereonite 6–7 and pleon articulations absent medially. Pleon broad and elongate, wider than head or pereon, distinctly longer than pereonites 5–7, posterolateral spines angled medially, posterior margin blunt, not projecting. Antennula extending beyond margin of head, with 5 segments, distal article bulbous, article 4 distal margin with ventromedial projection. Opercular pleopods elongate and broad, covering pleon ventral surface. Remarks. The variability of the posterior body somite articulation, a central theme of this paper, necessitates a reconsideration of the genus Nannonisconus Schultz, 1966. A survey of the published descriptions of Nannoniscus and specimens in the Australian Museum's collection (Table 1) showed several species with an absent ventral articulation between the pleon and pereonite 7, as mentioned above. N. oblongus, however, does have a suture between the pleon and pereonite 7 (Figs 2 A, 4 A, 6 A–B), suggesting that the absent pleonal suture on the dorsal surface in Nannonisconus, previously the only definitive character of this genus, is only an endpoint in a continuum. My inspection of N. intermedius Siebenaller & Hessler, 1981 (nontype specimens from the type locality WHOI 297; AM P. 74558) showed that, although the suture is present dorsally between the pleon and pereonite 7, it is only a groove in the surface, which appeared to be absent in some specimens. Nannonisconus, however, does define a distinctive clade within the Nannoniscidae. Although the absence of pleonal articulation is a weak character, the genus can still be recognised by its unique pleotelson shape (Siebenaller & Hessler 1981: 242). Consequently, the species N. intermedius is moved to Nannonisconus and the generic diagnosis modified to reflect these changes. The genus may also be characterised by pleopods I–II covering entire ventral surface of pleotelson, although this feature is only incompletely known in some species. Additionally, the terminal article 5 of the antennula appears to have two segments but without an interannular margin (e.g., Wilson, 1997: fig. 1.42; Mezhov, 1986: fig. 36), which may be significant once the full detail on this structure is known.Published as part of Wilson, George D. F., 2008, A review of taxonomic concepts in the Nannoniscidae (Isopoda, Asellota), with a key to the genera and a description of Nannoniscus oblongus Sars, pp. 1-24 in Zootaxa 1680 on pages 20-21, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18039

The Modified Schultz Index of Trees

    No full text
Abstract For a graph G = (V, E), the modified Schultz index of G is defined as the degree of the vertex u of G, and d G (u, v) is the distance between u and v. Lower bounds on modified Schultz index in trees in terms of the order and diameter are determined. Mathematics Subject Classification: 05C05, 05C1

The Columbus Knee System: 4-Year Results of a New Deep Flexion Design Compared to the NexGen Full Flex Implant

    No full text
The Columbus knee systemis designed as a standard knee implant to allow high flexion without additional bone resection. Between August, 2004 andMarch, 2010 we performed 109 total knee arthroplasties of the Columbus knee system in 101 consecutive patients suffering from primary arthrosis of the knee. Mean age was 72.4 years in women and 70.3 years in men. Mean followup was 47.3 months. The 4-year results of a group of patients who received the NexGen Full Flex implant operated by the same surgeon were used for comparison. Mean total knee score was Columbus: 175.6 and NexGen Flex: 183.4; P = 0.037. Mean operation time was 53 min for Columbus and 66min for NexGen Flex; P 0.05. Radiological assessment showed no signs of loosening for both groups. Therefore, the Columbus knee system can be recommended for flexion angles up to 140◦

Spectacular Things Happen Along the Way: Lessons from an Urban Classroom by Brian D. Schultz

    No full text
Brian Schultz, author of Spectacular Things Happen Along the Way: Lessons from an Urban Classroom, serves as a model for innovation in co-constructing democratic curriculum with students and for challenging the resource, expectations, and funding gaps that exist for students who are marginalized on the basis of race, culture, language, or socioeconomic status. In a climate of assessment and prescribed curriculum, Schultz resists complacency and engages in critical pedagogy. The story that Schultz details in Spectacular Things Happen Along the Way provides lessons for pre-service and in-service teachers in development, motivation, learning, intelligence, culture, and assessment, as well as Schultz’s unraveling of the complexities and the rewards of being a reflective practitioner who learns alongside students in an authentic, student driven, curriculum
