The Danish West Indies 1835-1848: Peter von Scholten
AbstractThis paper examines the view of humanity that ruled at The Danish West Indies 1835-1848 andhow Peter von Scholten, the man who freed the slaves on the island, handled actions that the viewcaused. We have discovered, by studying the theorists Aristotle and Sara Ahmed, that the view ofhumanity was inspired by Aristotles’ thought of natural slavery. Likewise, it was believed thatpeople were born with a predetermined position. By investigating the theories of the psychologistJette Hannibal, we can conclude that the division between the colored and white race was acategorization which led to stereotyping that increased the racism existing at The Danish WestIndies. Hereby a unification between the colored slaves and white rulers at Scholten’s time asGuvnor-general at The Danish West Indies where impossible. Moreover, it appears in ourempiricism with Judy Gammelgaard’s theory in mind that Scholten showed sympathy towards theslaves but he did not possess empathy. By studying the film Peter von Scholten (1987) with supportfrom Thorkild Hansen’s books Slavernes kyst (1967) and slavernes øer (1970), we have discoveredthat the lack of empathy led to an enormous pressure and desperation from the slaves, causing themto rebel and gain their freedom
General Buddhoe und Peter von Scholten.: Erinnerungen an Sklavenemanzipation auf den U.S. Virgin Islands und in Dänemark
The article deals with the construction of commemorative traditions of slave emancipation in the U. S. Virgin Islands and in Denmark. In 1848 a successful revolt of the slaves ended slavery in the Danish Caribbean colonies. In Denmark this event is connected with Peter von Scholten, who proclaimed the slave emancipation, heavily pressed by the slaves, whereas in the U. S. Virgin Islands one of the leaders of the rebellion, General Buddhoe, is synonymous with emancipation and resistance. By analysing the depiction of von Scholten and Buddhoe in the Danish movie “Peter von Scholten” the article points out how the Danish created a dominant narrative of slave emancipation

For close to half a century, the work of Germain Grisez has been highly influential, and his writings continue to receive considerable attention from philosophers and theologians of diverse viewpoints. His co-author for this work is the professor and noted moral theologian Fr. Peter Ryan, S.J., currently the executive director of the Secretariat of Doctrine and Canonical Affairs of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). These two eminent scholars explore fundamental questions about Christian eschatology, moral theory, the purpose of human life, and the promise of human fulfilment. The authors examine Christian teaching on the final destiny of persons, investigating the meaning of God's kingdom, the hope of the beatific vision, and the centrality of moral goodness and divine grace in one's final end. This work is an ideal source for students, scholars, ministers and lay persons interested in basic questions of Christian theology, the philosophy of religion, ethical theory, and Catholic doctrin
